A nice place but not cared for enough, it should also be vehicle free. Too much plastic pollution, UNESCO needs to get involved and protect this heritage site before all of the tourists and locals ruin it. Too many 'snake charmers' and people with 'pet' monkeys trying to get you to pose for a picture for money, Sri Lankans need to be educated to respect their wildlife and environment instead of exploiting it the way they do.
After nearly 3 weeks in Sri Lanka we loved wandering around the fort looking at the beautiful colonial properties, eating in the great restaurants, relaxing in the wonderful cafes and having a look round a great selection of shops (many with sparkly jewels😊). I know it's superficial, but we really enjoyed a day off culture, temples and traffic.
The best way to find out the fort is walking, although it gets very hot during the day time. There are many eateries for food and juices but the best local cuisine, specifically Kottu, can be found in Blockhouse Restaurant on Church street. Best ice cream can be found opposite to Blockhouse, Dairy King Cafe. Homemade ice cream with lots of flavors to choose from. Plenty of shops for shopping. There are hotels inside the fort as well but expensive. Original Mama's Rooftop restaurant is expensive, chicken curry LKR 750 ($5) per person whereas i had it for LKR 300 ($2) in other places. Being inside the fort area, everything is expensive. The lighthouse is nice. The sunset by the rampart is very nice.
The Galle Fort is a must see monument in Srilanka. It has had a facelift since the end of the civil war mid 2009. Today, if you leave aside the too overcrowded shops, and hust enjoy the historical Fort, you will certainly still be able to encounter Colonial feel.
One of our favourite places. Always go to are, Crepelogy & Minute by Tuk Tuk. You cannot find a better view that Minute by Tuk Tuk and I have never tasted better crepes from anywhere else in Sri Lanka apart from crepelogy
Fantastically preserved, or renovated, World Heritage Site, with great walks through the old streets and around the ramparts, even if tourist numbers were getting a tad heavy after New Year! It seemed sleepier before Christmas, and all the better for it. The whole peninsula is still a living and breathing town, with a locals' fish market, and law cases being discussed in the open air on the old square, etc., and Galle is not (yet?) just a Disneyland Theme Park version of its original self. Some of the hotels are over the top on prices, but there are also plenty of places in, say, the Dutch Hospital complex, where you can have superb meals at a reasonable cost. They should do more with the Maritime Museum, though, in a place like Galle famous for its maritime links ...
We stayed at Mango House the last day of a two week long round trip in Sri Lanka. The location is perfect, great breakfast, and exceptionally nice staff. We got a free upgrade with a cute, small balcony, where we saw lots of squirrels and birds. The hotel is perfect for a two night stay whilst exploring Galle fort. Will definitely stay here again next time I’m in Sri Lanka. I highly recommend talking to the staff about your plans in Sri Lanka. They are very happy to help you out and give great advice!
My friend and I were traveling around Sri Lanka and spent two nights here. The experience was absolutely beautiful! The design of the hotel was gorgeous and nicely incorporated Sri Lankan culture with a nod to the cities colonial past. The staff was lovely and warm. My friend had spa treatments that she said were really quite good. They offer a lovely complimentary serve yourself tea time in the afternoon which was very relaxing. Food was also very good. A great hotel to stay in within Galle Fort!
Charming host, very helpful. Breakfast was excellent, especially the Sri Lankan one was very tasty. Strong coffee. The building seemed a bit cooler than other hotels we stayed in Sri Lanka, probably thanks to some natural air circulation. Nice roof top terrace with hammocks. Galle Fort is very quiet and relatively free of car fumes. Definitely worth a few rupees more compared to Galle imho.
This is a nice quiet boutique hotel with great service, good amenities and friendly staff. It’s also walking distance to the Galle Fort that has many shops and restaurants to explore.
Excellent views of the Indian Ocean. A quiet apartment and very modern and well appointed. Fantastic value for money and easy access to Galle fort by foot or tuk tuk.
A lovely hotel right in the middle of Galle fort. It’s a nicely restored colonial building close to all the shops and restaurants of the old town.
Beautiful small hotel, well located in Galle Fort. Best breakfast we've ever had. Kind staff.
