Amazing place. No wonder that some scenes of Harry Potter movies where filmed there. You need to buy your ticket three doors to the left (5 euros), which can be redeemed against a purchase. The line-ups are insane. The best time to go is after 7 pm (it closes as 8:20 PM). You can also purchase your ticket(s) online.
We visited this bookstore on a weekend. You need to wait in line to but a ticket just to enter, and then wait again in line to enter the bookstore. I was expecting a much bigger shop, a nice display of the old, antique books and a nice ambiance on par with everything else I'd experienced in Porto, but this was the one and only disappointment of the trip. It was stuffy inside, the staff were kinda rude to the customers(which in retrospect might have been expected given how crowded the place was), and all the only exceptional thing is the staircase which is always too crowded for you to be able to really appreciate it. And as bookstores go, it was mediocre at best. Compared to American Book Center or Waterstones in Amsterdam(where I live) it wasn't really special, and there wasn't any way you could appreciate their collection of old books. There was a strong emphasis on Harry Potter themed merchandise which more than anything ruined the antique look and feel of the place. Overall, I'd say this place is a tourist trap, so avoid it and spend your time and money exploring the real attractions of this wonderful city
This bookshop charges 5 Euro entrance fee (If you buy a book there you get a discount). You have to wait in line to enter. It is a beautiful building but I didn't go in (too many people, long wait)
This bookshop itself IS incredible, but the experience of visiting it was much less so. The shop is absolutely packed with Harry Potter fans (who've heard that Rowling was inspired by this shop) taking pics of each other and selfies on the trick staircase, and very little interest is shown in the books, of which there is a great range in a number of languages. We bought two, getting our 5-euro entry back. Most people don't. If the fee were 10 or even 15 euros it might reduce the over-crowding in the shop or at least lead to a bit more interest in the literature. Damn Harry Potter.
Worth a visit even if you are not a Harry Potter fan. We went about 45 minutes before closing and didn’t have to queue. You follow directions to a nearby shop to buy tickets which cost €5. The interior is amazing as is the range of books on sale. As closing time approached and people left, we got to enjoy the shop without crowds, but even with the crowds it is an amazing thing to see.
Way too many people trying to get into this bookshop. It's famous for the staircase which is what most people want to look at and a closed section with some collection of books which is closed to public. Otherwise, it's a bookshop.. and you have to pay EUR 5 for a voucher you can use for any books you buy.. too crowded and overly rated.
