You can use the museum audio or your own telephone with a QR code if you do this take your own headphones for comfort. Go really early before the crowds. You can’t eat on the island. Know as much as you can before arriving it will enhance your visit
The audio tour is great! Everyone can enjoy this tour at his own pace. Also there are Park Rangers that will tell you more amazing stories about different aspects of the island and it's buildings.
Everyone should visit at least once. The history is interesting and the self guided audio tour lets you go at your own pace. Be prepared for a windy and chilly ferry ride there and back but the scenery is breathtaking
I was actually taken there by my friend, as I hadn't planned to go there and if I has missed this, I would have regret this until the rest of my life! I was very surprised, how great Alcatraz - place and its' history is. Not only the travel there is fast and pleasurable, but being there and listening to the audio guide with recorded voices of prisoners and guards, while doing a tour inside the Alcatraz prison is unforgettable experience! Highly recommended!
SIt on the top left part of the Ferry Boat on the way to Alcatraz for the best views of the Golden Gate Bridge (if not foggy) and the Island as you approach; bring a jacket/sweatshirt...you'll need it.
Tour kept my youngest son aged 7 entertained. We were fortunate enough to visit on a day when one of the few survivors from Alcatraz was there. Really interesting stories and delightful to meet him. Trip needs to be booked weeks in advance. It sells out very fast
The location of the hotel was perfect for tourists. We were walking distance from everything. Staff was very nice and accommodating. From the room we could see the red bridge and alcatraz. The hotel is two blocks from the twisty street and a short walk to the pier.
killer views of alcatraz, pier 39, heavenly bed shower gels shampoo brands spacious toilet shower great work desk red stool so pretty comfy, balcony is awesome, staffs are excellent no missing things items.
Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco
It was an excellent location. Two blocks from the waterfront with an excellent view of the bay. Alcatraz Island was the focal point of the view. Our host was extremely nice and very accomodating.
Room was well kept. Lots of eating places in walking distance. Water was hot. Location is good for visiting some tourists area such as the wharf, alcatraz port.
We had an amazing view of Alcatraz and San Francisco bay. Highly recommend this hotel!
Number 1 attraction is Alcatraz and you can't come here without visiting. Amazing experience. However this was probably surpassed by cycling over the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito and taking the ferry back. You will get amazing photos of the bridge doing it this way. World Series Baseball was on during our trip to California which San Francisco were in and eventually won which added an extra buzz to the city. In our time in San Francisco the Giants were in Kansas but the whole city was alive with Giants talk. Buy a MUNI visitor passport. At the start of the day you'll want to walk everywhere but those hills take their toll and you'll be glad you can jump on any bus, streetcar or cable car later in the day
For Alcatraz book a few weeks ahead, especially on the weekends
Try the Big Bus an excellent way to see this large and varied city. Try later in the year the weather is good and the summer travellers will have gone home. A trip to Alcatraz island is worth the time but book before you arrive to avoid disappointment. If the crowds overwhelm you head for the Haight or the Golden Gate park where there is space for all.
Listen to the history of Alcatraz first hand from convicts and guards via the headphones while exploring the cells. The voices and background sounds bring everything to life.
Alcatraz is the most prominent tourist thing to do but if you don't want to spend an afternoon there, or tickets are sold out (get them in advance btw), just waking along the pier there is loads to see. If you only have a few days there, a good way to see the city is the bus tours.
S F is quite a beautiful attraction to visit, we couldn't avoid the crowds. in fact there were so many crowds we missed visiting alcatraz it was booked out for days in advance and we missed out.
