Go really early, crowds for wait time , ferry . Long Interesting , but flies all over, from ferry to all over island , birds 🦅 fly over , watch for poop droppings , such a strong stink when you pull into island . Staff where you pick up audio tour , headsets so rude!
You can use the museum audio or your own telephone with a QR code if you do this take your own headphones for comfort. Go really early before the crowds. You can’t eat on the island. Know as much as you can before arriving it will enhance your visit
The audio tour is great! Everyone can enjoy this tour at his own pace. Also there are Park Rangers that will tell you more amazing stories about different aspects of the island and it's buildings.
Everyone should visit at least once. The history is interesting and the self guided audio tour lets you go at your own pace. Be prepared for a windy and chilly ferry ride there and back but the scenery is breathtaking
I was actually taken there by my friend, as I hadn't planned to go there and if I has missed this, I would have regret this until the rest of my life! I was very surprised, how great Alcatraz - place and its' history is. Not only the travel there is fast and pleasurable, but being there and listening to the audio guide with recorded voices of prisoners and guards, while doing a tour inside the Alcatraz prison is unforgettable experience! Highly recommended!
SIt on the top left part of the Ferry Boat on the way to Alcatraz for the best views of the Golden Gate Bridge (if not foggy) and the Island as you approach; bring a jacket/sweatshirt...you'll need it.
Marina District, San Francisco
This was a typical American motel, room was comfortable and clean but could do with a bit of a refresh and some TLC. The location was good for us although we did not appreciate how much uphill there is in San Francisco, so walking was not an option. We would recommend Alcatraz and the Big Bus Tour but avoid the Aquarium at Pier 39, the Science Academy in Golden gate Park has a much better Aquarium and lots else to see. Enjoyed the cable car but very crowded.
Marina District, San Francisco
You can't get any better location for a hostel than this. It's waterfront where you could see the Alcatraz from the hostel window and lots of land to walk around to or relax. The fisherman's wharf is just a short walk. Our 2-bunkbed room has high ceiling making it airy and smelling clean when the breeze from the outside comes in . Breakfast is simple but good! Staff are helpful.
The hotel is fantastic. The staff is very friendly. The breakfast they have is excellent. The location of the hotel is very strategic, it is close to Pier 39, Alcatraz, the tour buses and many restaurants. I went with my husband and we had an unforgettable vacation.
It was quiet and close to many restaurants, it was close to the Ferry and the port to Alcatraz, this room was much bigger than the previous room I stayed at and it have a microwave and fridge, there was a comedy club next door that was fun, felt safe in the area
Absolutely wonderful hotel! Loved the vibe of the hotel, friendly and accommodating staff, decor, bar, cafe! This is a winner. Great location - approx 2 blocks from Union Square. Walkable to Wharf, ferry to Alcatraz, Lombard Street, and China Town. Very Clean!
It is right next to many attractions. We always felt safe once we entered the building. Our room was super clean. The view of the Bay and Alcatraz was amazing.
This is a cool place right on the Bay, you can walk down the hill and see Alcatraz! Lots of places to eat and shopping nearby! Pet friendly!
Clean rooms. Very friendly staff. Great location. Walking distance to Alcatraz Ferry, Fisherman's Wharf, Chinatown.
Marina District, San Francisco
Cowtown area of San Francisco close to Presidio, Marina, Alcatraz.
Very nice room with a view to the ocean and of Alcatraz island.
Number 1 attraction is Alcatraz and you can't come here without visiting. Amazing experience. However this was probably surpassed by cycling over the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito and taking the ferry back. You will get amazing photos of the bridge doing it this way. World Series Baseball was on during our trip to California which San Francisco were in and eventually won which added an extra buzz to the city. In our time in San Francisco the Giants were in Kansas but the whole city was alive with Giants talk. Buy a MUNI visitor passport. At the start of the day you'll want to walk everywhere but those hills take their toll and you'll be glad you can jump on any bus, streetcar or cable car later in the day
For Alcatraz book a few weeks ahead, especially on the weekends
Try the Big Bus an excellent way to see this large and varied city. Try later in the year the weather is good and the summer travellers will have gone home. A trip to Alcatraz island is worth the time but book before you arrive to avoid disappointment. If the crowds overwhelm you head for the Haight or the Golden Gate park where there is space for all.
Listen to the history of Alcatraz first hand from convicts and guards via the headphones while exploring the cells. The voices and background sounds bring everything to life.
Alcatraz is the most prominent tourist thing to do but if you don't want to spend an afternoon there, or tickets are sold out (get them in advance btw), just waking along the pier there is loads to see. If you only have a few days there, a good way to see the city is the bus tours.
S F is quite a beautiful attraction to visit, we couldn't avoid the crowds. in fact there were so many crowds we missed visiting alcatraz it was booked out for days in advance and we missed out.
