Perfect escape from the hustle of Tokyo. The private onsens are a great way to unwind in a tranquil setting and the traditional breakfast/dinner were a tasty and filling, insight into the local cuisine. Staff were also great and always on hand to help with a smile.

Very large but quiet hotel. Diff set up to usual. The dorm rooms were very cute. Instead of bunk beds you actually have a single bed with table just a curtain instead of a door.

As part of my Gunma trip, I wanted to stay at a hotel with an open-air private onsen! I took a risk booking this one because, at the time of my research, there weren’t many photos available. The website only featured beautiful sketches of the rooms and layouts. I later discovered that the hotel was very new—less than a month old! Enticed by the promise of a serene open-air bath, I went ahead with the reservation. When the day arrived, check-in was smooth and easy. I forgot to get the concierge’s name, but he was incredibly friendly, and I appreciated his effort to speak English with us. When we were shown to our room, it was breathtaking. The view outside was spectacular, like a painting brought to life. Light snow was falling, creating an enchanting atmosphere. The private onsen? Absolutely top-notch—chef’s kiss! Breakfast the next morning was superb, and all the staff were wonderfully friendly and helpful throughout our stay. Thank you so much for this amazing experience. This was undoubtedly one of the best accommodations I’ve stayed at in Japan. I sincerely hope the hotel continues to do well because I can’t wait to come back next time. Thank you again, Kanouya and staff! See you again soon! 🙏 Tips for anyone considering this hotel: Go for it—it’s absolutely worth it!

We booked the room with a private onsen for our honeymoon. We arrived with our rental car and were greeted by the valet whom parked our car. We were then seated to a separate table where a lady (who I assumed is the manager) talked a bit of English and explained the rules (onsens) and times (breakfast and dinner). She then walked us through our room (no elevators btw). The room was a beautiful traditional Japanese Ryokan. It is right next to the flowing river. I wouldn't recommend opening the window though due to the insects. The bathroom is very nice and the shower is outdoors next to the private onsen. The beds on the tatami will be set up for you while you are having dinner. The dinners and breakfasts were delicious and yes very exotic (horse/deer sashimi, boar soup and tiny deep fried crabs). The flavours and portions were abundant. The lovely and friendly lady that served us for dinner explained everything very well and she was a happy personality. Overall, I loved the whole traditional experience and felt very relaxed throughout the stay. Definitely recommend if you are coming here to unwind and eat delicious food.

Looking for a property with onsen?

Featuring traditional Japanese hot springs known as "onsen," these hotels offer a relaxing soak in therapeutic, geothermal waters. The healing properties of each onsen will vary depending on its location, with "kuroyu" black water famous for its positive effects on skin.

Great highrise riverside ryokan furnished with good taste of traditional interior. Much better than many ryokans of this type which use cheaper artificial materials. The private onsen was fabulous and met our expectation.

It was one of the best boutique ryokans we had stayed, located in a beautiful charming shima onsen. Service was personable. There are 3 lovely private onsen baths for guest to use freely. Meals were excellent - exquisite and delicious! There’s free coffee/tea at a little library area. We used the free bicycles provided to cycle to town and beyond which was so much fun. Our only regret - should have booked 2 nights stay at least.
