Onyado Nono Matsumoto Natural Hot Spring provides rooms in Matsumoto near Matsumoto Station and Matsumoto Castle. I love that I can walk around without shoes, the Onsen, ice cream and comics on the top floor. There’s also a small portion of ramen for supper. Location is great too. Good breakfast spread - both Japanese and western. Very close to the train station. Magnificent!

Just 250 metres from Zenko-ji Temple, Matsuya Ryokan offers simple Japanese rooms with tatami-mat floors, a green-tea maker and an attached Western bathroom. The hotel features public baths. The location couldn’t be better just on the main attraction street and a short walk from the museum on one side or the town center on the other. Spacious Traditional room with comfortable futon and great bathroom. There was also a public bath which was lovely at the end of the day to relax. We had one evening meal there and the food was nice. Staff was very kind (even with our turbulent toddler)

Situated in Karuizawa, 16 km from Usui Pass Railway Heritage Park, Tokyu Vacations Karuizawa features accommodation with free WiFi and free private parking. I loved that the units were massive in terms of japanese hotels. All the amenities were given, even a washer and dryer. Can't complain at all. It was also walking distance to the ski resort and the shopping outlet. Will definitely come again.

Set in Suwa, 8.2 km from Canora Hall and 34 km from Takato Joshi Park, Suwa tiny house 一棟まるまる貸切 limited to 1group per day offers air conditioning. Ome of the nicest host I have ever met, even when it was only briefly. I was even allowed to Check-In earlier. Just had to message her beforehand. Even when I forgot to my glasses after checkout, she went out of her way to send it to my next location and even called the hotels in order to confirm that it was possible. The house itself is tiny, as the name suggests, but it has everything that needs to be there. And it gives a really cute traditional Japanese House vibe. Lastly, she snuck in the cutest handwritten note into the package for my glasses. I don’t think I ever had a host this cute before. I definitely can recommend this stay and would book it every time again if I stayed in Suwa.

Set in Hakuba in the Nagano region, with Hakuba Goryu Ski Resort nearby, Hakuba Third Place Lodge offers accommodation with free WiFi and free private parking. Everything was impeccable and the spaces are all very cozy. The private bath was a such a treat. We loved the views from the room and shared spaces as the house is next to the forest. Akira is an awesome host. Even though we stayed here during green (and rainy) season, he gave us lots of recommendations of things to do around the area. He speaks English fluently so communication was very easy. Can’t recommend enough!

Situated in Matsumoto and only 2.4 km from The Japan Ukiyo-e Museum, Nonna Milli features accommodation with mountain views, free WiFi and free private parking. Nonna Milli was incredible- the beds were exceptionally comfortable, especially as Elia and his wife had them custom made for extra thickness. We woke up more comfortable than when we went to bed! The house is so beautifully kept and restored, with everything so well thought out- it felt very special staying in this house being our first time in Japan. Everything was immaculately clean. Sharing the bathroom was no problem at all, we didn’t even feel like it was a shared bathroom it was always available for us. A highly memorable experience in Matsumoto!

Offering a shared lounge and mountain view, Snow Palace Nozawa is situated in Nozawa Onsen, 21 km from Ryuoo Ski Park and 32 km from Jigokudani Monkey Park. Great location. Really clean and well maintained. The staff was extremely helpful with any requests. Walking distance to everything and close to the one of the best bakeries ever
