River Bend Lodge

Addo

Located on a private concession within the malaria free Addo Elephant National Park, River Bend Lodge offers luxury accommodation, spa facilities and private game drives. Free WiFi is available.

The 5-star, spacious and elegantly decorated suites offer a private patio with views of the surrounding landscapes and animals. All have air conditioning, a ceiling fan, flat-screen TV, coffee machine and a bathroom with separate bath and shower and complimentary toiletries The grounds were really beautiful with cottages surrounding artfully landscaped grounds that were filled with birdsong. The chef was truly excellent and we enjoyed our breakfasts and dinners. Our park ranger, Paul MacKenzie, was outstanding. He knew the wildlife really well and had many tales from his interesting life. Rafa, one of the elephants blessed us with his presence at the gate on the day of our game drive and were fortunate to spend a lot of time with one of the lions. The Park concession was very good because it gave us long views. In contrast, during our solo drive from the bottom of Addo to the top, there was large bush obscuring views. I found the staff at River Bend to be really friendly and enjoyed my many conversations with them, particularly time spent talking to Jenna. I also enjoyed talking to Gladys, who worked in the kitchen. She and I share an interest in sewing with Shweshwe. We highly recommend River Bend. It is truly a 5 star experience.

Safari Lodge - Amakhala Game Reserve

Amakhala Game Reserve

Situated within the Amakhala Game Reserve, Safari Lodge - Amakhala Game Reserve is a thatched lodge offering an outdoor swimming pool, garden and sun terrace. The Port Elizabeth Airport is 88 km away.

The Africa-inspired rooms are elegantly decorated and are fitted with a seating area, safe and mosquito net. Each unit features a private plunge pool and patio. I had a wonderful stay at Amakhala Safari Lodge. The staff go above and beyond, the food is good and plentiful, and the suite is heaven. I recommend arriving by 2 PM on your check-in day so you can attend the afternoon drive. The drives are fantastic; the guides are very knowledgable and the reserve is huge. Come with a good attitude; you may or may not see depending on the weather or the fact that animals are unpredictable - but the guides will try their hardest! My guide Des made several efforts to find rhinos - even staying later than normal until we found them!

Bush Lodge – Amakhala Game Reserve

Amakhala Game Reserve

Situated in the Amakala Big Five Game Reserve, Bush Lodge offers an intimate lodge experience. It features an outdoor swimming pool, viewing deck and a number of game drives and bush walks.

The luxury tents have a deck with private plunge pool and views of the surrounding bush. They come with thatched roofs and wooden floors, as well as a fireplace and minibar. Our three days at Bush Lodge were amazing. The accommodation was perfect (we appreciated the private plunge pool and loved the large comfortable bed). The meals varied and delicious. Most of all were the six game drives with James (JD) at the helm. We saw a wide variety of animals including 4 of the Big 5. Thanks to a wonderful team for making our little vacation memorable.

Happy Lands Farmstay

Addo

This B&B in the heart of the Addo Valley offers romantic accommodation on a working citrus farm. The surrounding garden has a swimming pool, and all rooms come with free WiFi.

The rooms at Happy Lands are decorated with natural and white wood, mosquito nets and soft fabrics. Each offers a private bathroom with a shower. Nita and Mike were the most wonderful hosts, like the grandparents you ever dreamt of - so full of warmth and love. Even though we stayed for just one night, we almost felt part of their family. We also loved their super nice dogs (and cats) and the marvellous, park-like property. We stayed in the immaculate Midknight cottage, which was not only comfortable and well-appointed but also rich in history. The farm is close to Addo Elephant Park and a number of restaurants, for which Nita and Mike provided helpful recommendations. Altogether a wonderful experience!
