Nestled between the snow-capped Zillertal Alps and the grassy peaks of the Kitzbühel Alps is the picture-perfect Zillertal region. Stretching from the villages of Strass to Mayrhofen then dividing into four smaller valleys.
Zillertal Arena is the perfect facility for the lovers of snowboarding, skiing, hiking, and mountain biking. It is the largest ski area in the region ranging over 163 km and features 50 lifts which have the capacity to transport up to 76,000 people per hour.
The charming and traditional Austrian town of Mayrhofen is only a 1-hour drive from Tyrol. It is a popular spot for trail-walking and hiking, with hundreds of marked trails available for all kinds of walkers. Mayrhofen is also famous for hosting the Snowbombing Music Festival, usually held in April each year.

We were traveling by car (there are also ski busses), so visited all nearby skiing locations (you may buy one skipass which will cover all of them). Fugen is a great base for the Zillertal Valley. There are good restaurants and bars and it is less noisy than some places. Easy road and rail access to the other resorts. We have stayed in this village several times. We really like not having to queue at bust times to get up the valley. We always leave early to get on the lifts and the roads are quiet then. This skiing area is large enough for a week, except when you are a experienced skier, then it might be too small. It was 14-17 °C all week (march '25 !!!) and there was still enough snow on the slopes, just not in the valley below. Good slopes, not too many for real beginners though. The perfect Zillertal base — charming, active, and full of alpine character. Mayrhofen is a gem in the heart of the Zillertal Alps — both lively and surrounded by breathtaking scenery. My favorite spot in town was the central square with the iconic ibex statue and the beautiful alpine church, perfect for soaking in the mountain vibe. I enjoyed traditional Tyrolean meals at local guesthouses, and the hut-style restaurants in the surrounding mountains are worth the hike. Breakfast at my hotel was exceptional, and the Zillertal beer is a must-try after a long day outdoors. Getting around is easy — everything in town is walkable, and the Zillertalbahn train makes exploring the valley simple. For solo travelers like me, Mayrhofen is ideal: scenic hiking trails start right from town, there’s an excellent pool & spa complex (Erlebnisbad), and plenty of cafés and beer gardens to meet people or just relax.
