The safest "big" city in Brazil (state capital), it has everything you may want, combines nature and beaches with city life and culture. August was a bit cold still (15C during the night, 20C during the day), and a bit rainy. But I believe September would be the perfect time to visit. Florianópolis is a very large city spread out all over the island. Centro is convenient but fairly boring. The north is much more fun and touristic. The south is more calm and nature oriented. The east is relaxing low traffic and great beaches for surfing and less busy than the north. The north side has more areas characteristic of rio beaches with vendors and rentals everywhere (plus crowding). The east has less of that. Nice downtown, unfortunately surrounded with big highway. But the carnaval a downtown was great. Rest of the island is perfect, we visited Mosambique beach, Lagoon and had great time here. Boat trips, trails in jungle, monkeys and other local animals, perfect. In jungle are some poisonous snakes, so it's good to watch under feets ;).
