The family running the hotel were so wonderful- they were smiley and helpful, helping us to book taxis, giving us advice about hikes & transport. When accommodation at our next place didn't work out they happily allowed us to stay another 2 nights. The views over the mountains, tropical plants & coast are breathtaking, and the inner garden courtyard where the rooms face is full of banana & breadfruit trees as well as tropical flowers. The breakfast is big & varied day by day- the view from the breakfast roof terrace room is stunning. They gave us tinfoil to take the sandwiches we had made from breakfast on our hike with us.

Everything, from the idyllic location to the room, the staff and food was incredible. The food makes you want to eat here every day. Breakfast is very diverse with use of mostly local products or local (breakfast)dishes. Delicious. Dinner is equally mouthwatering. Wide range of drinks as well. Rooms are modern, large and very comfortable. Then the location. It’s awesome. The views are unbeatable and the place is only a short walk away from the bigger town Vilas das Pombas. The owner and her husband are some of the nicest hotel owners I’ve met. They definately went the extra mile. Highly recommend Kasa d’Vizin.

Very friendly and helpful host, Due to a delayed flight Jan let us change our booking very obligingly. He gave us great tips for hikes and restaurants. The nice and clean room was even cleaned during our short stay. A nice terrace was available too. Anytime again!

I think we were very annoying on our arrival day, since we changed our estimated check-in time 2 times: From the initial 10h in the morning to 5h in the afternoon, to 10h in the evening. This was all possible since messages/phonecalls were answered quickly, allowing us to communicate efficiently. Even though the host had already left when we finally arrived, she had informed us about how to get inside; it all went very smooth. We had room number 1. This is important, since this seems to be the only room in the house with a private bathroom. The room (of about 12m²) has a separate dressing room (of about 6m²) with a huge wall-to-wall closet. From that dressing room, a door leads to a patio (about 8m²) with some cables that can be used for drying some laundry (no, there is no washing machine). Apart from windows, there is no other entrance to that patio, so it was basically "ours". The dressing room also leads to the private bathroom (with a door) of about 5m². It features a well sized shower with hot water, a sink and a toilet. The toilet's shower-for-private parts was broken unfortunately, but with a real shower nearby, that was not really an issue. Room 1 is the only room on the ground floor and it connects directly to the shared lounge/kitchen/reception/stairway area of roughly 45m². There are some tables and chairs and a large well equipped kitchen. There were all sorts of cookies, fruits, coffee, tea, juice, milk, drinking water and quite some stuff in the fridge that we were all allowed to eat/drink. This is also where a nice host (Keila, a young lady) prepares and serves breakfast at whatever (reasonable) time you agree with her. As you might have guessed, that breakfast is amazing, and everything is served with a smile. Outside there is a big terrace to enjoy the sun all day long. In conclusion: An amazing experience for a very small price.

There are many places to visit at this side of the island.

There are many places to visit at this side of the island. Xoxo, Cova crater, the walk between Cruzinha and Ponta do Sol, Paul valley, Synagoga are all fantastic. If you don't fear heights and like to hike up or down, then you find breathtaking views and hidden gems wherever you go. Hiking routes are fairly signaled, though we lost the way sometimes - but every time we found something extra, a nice village, terraces, locals working in the gardens or on the fields. The town is not big, but have some nice restaurants and bars to eat and drink. Easy to find taxi or aluguer, though not many are running on Sundays.

Lovely small town by the coast close to mountain trails.

Lovely small town by the coast close to mountain trails. We stayed 5 nights but would have happily stayed another couple of nights. Good restaurants in town including an authentic Italian place run by an Italian and serving home-made pasta with tables on his terrace. He has a wonderful model town, that he has made himself, on display for you to look at while waiting to order. Casa Maracuja served good local cuisine and we also enjoyed the food at Paladar where they serve cachupa. We had a rental car, but there were also alughers available for transport to Porto Novo, the ferry port.

Beautiful view of the sunset from tidal pools where you can swim protected from the waves. My host arranged a reservation at a private restaurant in someone's home, with live music. It was delicious and a great experience. The town is a little dirty. I didn't stay long enough to really know the town, I'm sure it has its gems.

It's wonderful brand new well equipped and modern apartment. For me the location was fantastic. It was meters from the beach and a supermarket and a great local restaurant. I always talked to town to meet the shuttles and drivers for hikes and the ferry. There is a great balcony - I also cooked and used the washing machine - living room was really wide in comparison to majority of apartment rentals I had. I really loved it.

Very small village but with lots of charm. Visit the Hotel Tienne del Mar for a dinner or for a drink, there are amazing views. Pombas is also a good place for some great hikes (Cova-Pombas or Pombas-Pico da Cruz-Janela).

If you love large areas of rugged untouched nature, then Santo Antão is a magnificent island. Porto Novo is the perfect place to start your daily expeditions from. Be sure to rent a car and the entire island, with its stunning views around each bend in the bumpy mountainous streets, Is at your feet. The island is not that big and from Porto Novo, a car can get you anywhere on the island in 1.5 hours tops, whether you pass over some of the 1600m high majestic mountains or along the coast.

I was a little disappointed in Cape Verde as a whole (stayed in Sao Vincenzo and Sao Antao) While there are some amazing views in the rural and coastal areas a lot of the towns do not look very attractive - a lot of concrete and blocky, half finished buildings. Taken as a whole I didn't find the people as friendly and charming and jolly as is made out in certain guidebooks and websites, & you have to deal with a fair few hustlers and hagglers.....plus some of the staff in shops and eateries can be low key hostile and sullen. With regard to Porto Novo I came to really like it just because I stayed there for a fair few days, but be aware that it is not really a picture post card, touristy port town as you may be expecting. It takes a bit of settling in and getting used to. It is safe though.....you can walk around freely, but you get importuned by beggars and hustlers. Do try and support the local economy though by purchasing from roadside sellers. I got some home made cheese from outside the port and it was actually really good. :)
