"Much more to do than we initially realised. Recommended: canal tour, Groningen Museum, Interior Architecture of Groningen Railway Station, loved The Forum, went out to University of Groningen Zernike Campus to photograph the architecture, did a walking tour of the city and identified so many great places to eat. The Swingin’ Groningen music festival was on so we saw some sets across the multiple stages across the city, enjoyed the Maak Festival (craft festival). Buses are so easy around the city. Use your feet or use the bus (for Zernike Campus). Beware some restaurants don’t accept Visa Debit or Visa Credit. You’ll need cash or Maestro to pay in those locations. This is because Visa “promises to pay” which in those venues is seen as a loan and is therefore not acceptable to some independent traders. They also don’t like the American Express card because of the fees Amex charge. We ate macarons and bonbons at Grand Cafe Prinsenhof after a walk through the stunning Prinsenhof Gardens - check it out in Google maps, it looks good from an aerial perspective too, Pho Saigon Restaurant had HUGE portions of great food. Smaller portions and less good was the Het Goudkantoor behind the Grote Markt but it was hosting a live music event. Not bad, just not great. We ate on the terrace at Markt Hotel and that was delicious. Best food by a mile we had was at the Four Roses Mexican restaurant, I normally avoid Mexican food because it can me hot or miss, but this was a BIG HIT. We were hugely surprised by the exhibits in the Groningen museum - much more beautiful and interesting than we were expecting. Would love to go back again."

The location is amazing right in the city centre next to the forum. Spent a long weekend with friends and my brother who has an infant child. The hotel is also very child friendly. Very nice and luxurious bedrooms. Gym and spa in the basement.

We loved the relaxed atmosphere with every need catered for. The staff were friendly and helpful. The recommended restaurant was very good. Loved watching the boats and the breakfast was very tasty.

Having stayed at this hotel before we had no hesitation in rebooking it. The location is perfect for us as family all live nearby in Hoogezand, Noordbroek and Groningen. The rooms are so spacious and comfortable beds which is important. The daily buffet breakfast certainly didn't disappoint and we used the restaurant on occasions including treating our family to a final farewell dinner. The staff were always very pleasant and helpful for\\rom the front, reception, restaurant staff, room service and ground staff.

This place is an amazing find . Up in the north a great base to go exploring. Giethoorn was beautiful and did a fantastic canal trip . Joure was one of my fav places we explored from pieterburen . Id come back here . 100 percent... The staff at the hotel are so helpful . The only problem . We booked supper and yet arrived 5 mins before our time and there were no tables .? God knows what goes on in the summer season . ? But we found the most fabulous place . de jongens. The food was amazing. The hotel room we had was fantastic. And we would go back 100 percent ... Thanks .

Groningen was a fantastic city to visit with a really friendly and welcoming vibe. The atmosphere throughout the city felt lively but relaxed, and we felt comfortable exploring day and night. I’d definitely recommend visiting the main square, as it’s full of energy with plenty of bars, restaurants, and things to see. That said, it’s also worth wandering a little further out to discover some of the smaller bars and hidden gems, which gave the city even more character. If you get the chance, try to catch a Netherlands match while you’re there — the atmosphere was incredible and made the trip even more memorable. Overall, a brilliant city with lots of charm, great nightlife, and a really enjoyable atmosphere.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Bourtange.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Bourtange. It’s a very beautiful historic village within the walls of a fort. Very peaceful and quiet as my visit was in early spring. I had an excellent meal at ‘s Lands Huys.

Comfortable bed.

Comfortable bed. Downside breakfast poor, advised re allergies and fir gluten free for one of the party but unable to accommodate. In many a hotel when requested milk in our own drinking cup so that we can give our daughter her medication, we have never been charged for such but not here, charged more than a litre would have cost at the shop. They didn't even have any equipment to clean. Some of the butter was out of date, staff informed but not taken away. Had dessert but quite expensive for what we got. Disappointed Would avoid the hotel next time

It's a village - a day or two should be enough to explore. It's beautiful: the canals, churches, the streets and the characteristic houses are wonderful. Smiling locals greeting you, the cafes and restaurants so cozy and homey. There are walking / cycling routes in the area which are great as well - the route to Maarhuizen is one I would definitely recommend.

The city is awesome!

The city is awesome! It was vibrant and friendly with some nice restaurants a great library (the Forum) and a beautiful canal with charming houseboats. I loved the style of the houses, walking all around the city. The Harbour Cafe was a great place to eat. We really enjoyed our time in Groningen. Unfortunately, my father was ill so we didn't do as much sightseeing as I would have liked, but even so, it was really fun. We also visited Bourtagne, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it.

Bourtange is a wonderful example of a Seventeenth Century...

Bourtange is a wonderful example of a Seventeenth Century star fort. There are lots of interesting features to explore and discover. The two bar/restaurants in the centre provide excellent meals and drinks.

It is a relatively large Ducth city.

It is a relatively large Ducth city. It has everything one would expect from a big city. It hosts two universities. Altough almost everything is structured around university students, there is a lot to do and see. Saying that one should not have expectations of a city, similar to Amsterdam or Rotterdam. The advantage is that it is compact, almost everywhere is within walking distance, people are very well educated. The only thing to keep in mind is the weather full of surprises...
