We loved Ávila, the city walls are the main attraction, plus there are monasteries and churches to visit. The walled city is easy for waking around. There are many restaurants with outdoor eating areas. The one thing to be aware of is that the town more or less closes down from 2:00 until about 5:00. This is common in Spain but may surprise visitors who are not aware of “siesta.” That was when we returned to the Parador for snacks in the club room and terrace. I will mention that the food in the Parador restaurant was delicious and they had vegetarian options right in the menu without me having to ask, which I really appreciated!Guest review byLindaUnited Kingdom - 10.0

It was very comfortable to rest (shower and sleep) on the room during our trip by car from France to Portugal. We had a very good rest. We didn't visit nor ate nor did walks on the nature but we know it's in a very well located place for hiking in the mountains.Guest review byJorgePortugal - 8.0

The town has lovely river walks and a quaint centre. Limited shopping but couple of nice restaurants. Castle worth a stroll round, fun watching the storks. El Barco de Avila is an ideal base to explore further the area and the Jerte Valley.Guest review byEileenUnited Kingdom - 10.0
Loved it, we’ll be back for a longer stay.
Loved it, we’ll be back for a longer stay. I’d forgotten how much we’d liked this part of Spain back in our biking days! The Infanta Isabel accommodation is great, seems to be part of a development rescuing part of the town’s older quarter. Plaza de la Villa is like a medieval set waiting for a film crew to arrive. Arevalo is a small place so easy to get around in the hunt for somewhere to eat. Around the Plaza de la Villa are some restaurants, quite expensive and not all open the Friday we were there. We went in search of an Italian restaurant with good reviews and found it closed - and looking unlikely to open any time soon! We entertained - and were entertained by - some delightful and friendly local people who pointed us in the direction of…Sharkies, a bar/restaurant serving tapas, pizzas, kebabs and platos combinados - very friendly and efficient service and good food reasonably priced.Guest review byMarkUnited Kingdom - 8.0

Great view of the Sierra de Gredos and starting place to drive to the Plataforma de Gredos. This is an easy way to experience high mountain landscape without having to climb yourself. If you wander off the beaten track (avoid Laguna Grande), you will likely see large herds of ibexes. La Galana is a Slow Food restaurant with great food.Guest review byIngridGermany - 8.0

The wooden floors throughout the hotel are very noisy but we appreciate this is not something easily changed. Our first room was particularly noisy and we considered booking out after one night but reception staff were incredibly helpful and found us a quieter room. This is a great place for walkers and hikers but it was a very long and winding road to get there. While in Gredos, we would recommend going to the caves... that alone was worth the visit! Breakfast was delicious... would definitely recommend it. They have a lovely little gift cabinet at reception.Guest review byTrisha PageSpain - 6.0
Avila is an interesting place.
Avila is an interesting place. Not very big and a beautiful wall around the city. We felt that the attitude of the people in Avila were slightly different than in the other cities we visited. We felt less welcome and at times starred at. We were as foreign tourist definitely in a minority group as almost all other tourist were Spanish. Perhaps we just met the grumpy ones and were unlucky. When ask at some attractions where we were from for statistical purposes we noticed that the response to us replying 'UK' was frown and the tone became slightly sharper...Guest review bySandorUnited Kingdom - 8.0

Nice town in amazing surroundings. Beautiful places for a walk in the mountains nearby. The town itself is nothing very special, but easy to navigate and quiet. There are some good restaurants available, but the variety isn't great.Guest review byMarekSpain - 10.0

The accommodation is listed as a Refugio - ie a hostal, so do not expect luxury. It is comfortable. The village is actually Barajas, and Navarrendonda is just a couple of kilometres away, with an excellent convenience store. This whole area is in the Gredos, the mountains in the area NW of Madrid, so the Madrelanous come for the week-end mainly for walking, which we also enjoyed. The whole area is beautiful and we have been in the Gredos several times.Guest review byTinaUnited Kingdom - 6.0

On balance, I'm not so sure Avila was the right choice for me. It isn't easy to get to - however you do it, it takes three trains from Madrid airport. The last one - from Madrid Principe Pio - takes over 90 minutes. Even so, Avila seems to be a place for day trips, so the lunchtime crowd is busy, but the place is a ghost town at night, with a lot of restaurants not even open (at least when we were there in a May midweek). Restaurants are curiously not geared to tourism - English speaking staff and English menus are the exception (and just forget it if you want German or French). I would contrast Avila unfavourably with Santiago del Compostella, which is ostensibly similar but is easier to reach, has far more hospitality choices and is much more tourist friendly.Guest review byMorrisUnited Kingdom
