Espot is a lovely town on a mountain river.
Espot is a lovely town on a mountain river. Its half-dozen restaurants are all within 50m of each other, and prices were half what you'd pay in Barcelona. The summer hiking is spectacular, but limited to two valleys. If you want to visit other parts of the park, you may want to split your stay between Espot and Boi. We stopped here as a convenient place to stay as we travelled west to east through the Pyrenees. El Pont de Suert is a bit of a “one horse town” and everything was closed on Wednesday and not much open on a Thursday either. It is not an attractive town. It is convenient to visit the Val de Boi, which is stunning but we should have travelled on to Vielha to stay, as it was only 20km further on. UNESCO Roman churches very nice Entrance to the Aigues Tortes National Park nearby for e.g. "Marmotte route"(beautiful though stony). For a short walk the Faro walk can be recommended. Great town at the foot of the mountain. Picturesque - what you would imagine a ski town to look like. Tons of restaurants in Arties - many of the ones you see in travel websites are there or very close. Mercadona supermarket in town too so very convenient. We liked to stay in Boi. It is very picturesque. Location for hiking is perfect. It is very quiet for the most part of the day. We liked it better than Taull. Knowing Spanish or French would have been beneficial. We used Google translation. We ate breakfast at home because we wanted to start hiking early and nothing is open before 8am. Food is good. A tiny store has essentials. You will need to work around the fact that lots of places are open from 8am to 1pm, close from 1pm to 5 pm and open again from 5pm to 8 pm. Caldes is a great location in the Pyrenees with spectacular scenery and a lot of hiking, mountain bike activities, climbing etc. The gastronomy is good too. Good combination of relax and activity. There are also a spa culture of a long tradition that offers updated services and amenities. Barruera is an interesting old village in the valley of Boi. It is in a good position for exploring the local area and there are well sign-posted walks straight from the village The staff at the tourist information centre are very helpful. Charming little village with great facilities including walks, bike hire, shops, cafes and restaurants. We used the local community pool everyday and also took a cold dip in the local river. Close location to larger towns with more facilities and activities including white water rafting and canyoning. Small mountain village that works as a great base to visit the Natural Park. Plenty of information about hiking routes to do there in the tourist information office. Good services in the village: small supermarket with all the basic goods you might need. Some good restaurants from a burger place, a pizza place and others... Taxi services to go up the park from the centre of the village. There is also a good bakery and a farmacy across the street from it. Basically, Espot covers all your basics.Guest review byNuriaSpain
