Le Couvent des Minimes, un Hôtel & Spa L'Occitane en Provence

The hotel is a wonderful conversion of the ancient convent. It is clear that mountains of money, but also tons of taste, were expended in achieving it. The result is sublime: like living in a beautiful château, except comfortable. As for the spa, it is superb, the best we’ve seen (and we’ve seen a few). It would impress a Roman emperor (if there were more slaves). We didn’t benefit from the huge outdoor pool or the terraces, since we were there in winter, but they would be a delight in warm weather. Someone has done a terrific job in assembling and training a rather young staff of charming and intelligent people. From the parking attendants to the receptionists, and from the waiters and waitresses to the exceptional sommelière (Ms. Pauline), there wasn't a one that we wouldn’t happily adopt and take home with us. The buffet breakfast: simply the best (really). The hotel has its own full-time boulanger, as well as a pastry chef. Okay, full disclosure: the coffee could be better. There is (of course) a gourmet restaurant (we can all imagine what that’s like), as well as a “bistro" on the premises. (Fortunately, since the local village doesn’t offer much at all.) The bistro serves mainly fanciful haute cuisine; we would have preferred that it be more authentically bistro-like, with some classic bistro-type food (steaks, daubes, foie gras, magret, confit de canard…yes, maybe even french fries!). It goes to show: even paradise can stand to be tweaked a bit.

This is a nice, typical small town of the South of France. When we were there, it was the open air market, it was quite packed with tourists. We would have probably enjoyed the town itself more with less people, but at the same time it was a great atmosphere.

Beautiful town with everything at your fingertips. I didn't visit surrounding places during my visit but there are plenty within easy driving distance. A month later and the lavender fields would have been in full bloom but in May I had great weather, good hikes and less people than in June. May was pretty busy. Dozens of good restaurants, cafes and bars and shops galore.

This is a nice little town with a range of shops bars and restaurants. It has a very large spa in it. The river and small gardens are very picturesque. Loads of walks from the Town and really good cycling country. It is quite a way from the main Verdon Gorge but there are some lovely smaller gorges nearby. I would go back to explore further in cooler weather.

Sisteron is in an amazing location - it really *is* the border of provence, and is quite visible in the vegetation, for example. The Citadelle itself is amazing, and well worth the visit (in spite of the number of steps for a lot of viewing). And for those of you who are vegetarian or vegan, Sisteron is lucky to have "O végé du Coin", where the organic food is innovative, and a real pleasure.

I came to Digne because of its higher altitude hoping to be a few degrees cooler than other parts of southern France and also the lure of thermal baths. The baths have modern facilities and are a short bus ride out of town and are very clean with good attention paid to hygiene. They have good changing booths and security for belongings. The baths are closed only on Tuesdays. The New Saigon buffet restaurant is very good value. Digne has some interesting old streets to explore. The narrow guage train is a lovely scenic trip down to Nice.

Jausiers is on the crossroads of two slightly different routes of the Route des Grandes Alpes: one via Col de la Bonette and another one via Col de la Cayolle. The Route is magnificent. Would strongly recommend to include in the Route the Gorges du Cians and, especially, Gorges de Daluis.
