Horrible, dirty city.
Horrible, dirty city. There are better European locations to travel to. The old town is literally one street that will take you 15 minutes to walk through and back. The metro map is confusing, with no English translations anywhere. The entire city is under construction. The cathedral has beautiful architecture with French descriptions. We had a car so we took day trips to surrounding towns in Provence before leaving Avignon to head up to Lyon, then Amboise, then Paris. I wish we had devoted more time to exploring Avignon itself without driving somewhere else every day. I drove down from the Marne valley and this was as far as I wanted to drive in one day! Orange is a delightful little town with Roman theatre the main attraction, but I used it as a base to visit Mont Ventoux (Tom Simpson memorial), Avignon, Arles, Camargue and Pont du Gard - all easily reached by car. Quieter than the main Provence towns but with nice restaurants and cafes so was very happy with it as a base for 3 days. Excellent town to base yourself for 3-5 days. Wandering around town in cafes, shops and restaurants along the canals. Cycle hire recommended for a day trip out to the countryside. The place was okay for one night Reza the young man who worked at the reception desk was very friendly and helpful. There was no AC as it was mentioned but the room was very hot. They offer a microwave to worm up your food and the breakfast was just enough (coffee, croissants, cheese and jams). Easy access and close to the high way and the gas station. Gallo Roman Museum is terrific. Other Roman sites were closed. Ancient theatre being made into a modern facility. Cathedral was very large and old but interesting. Lots of bars and restaurants.
