Amazing place to base yourself for time in the Pyrenees. We stayed for a week and could have stayed a few more days. Tons of hikes, waterfalls, water activities, and climbing within an hour's drive (but many places are much closer than that). My one piece of advice would be to make dinner reservations ahead of time or order your takeout early because most places fill up really fast and even the pizza places stopped taking orders early in the evening because they filled up so quickly! Lovely area.
Lovely area. Don't miss the Underground River tour at La Bouiche, and the Grotte du Mas d'Azil was amazing though the tour was only in French and you do not get to see the paintings. Pity the Museum opens at 4.30pm and we did not have enough time to visit it.Guest review byJosephMalta - 10.0

I love this village, very well situated between Pic du Midi, Gavarnie, and Pont d'Espagne directions. It has everything you need as a tourist: supermarkets and specialty stores (wine, cheese, etc), restaurants, a small market, a tourist office, parks, and several walking trails around the valley (ask for a map in the tourist office), a spa center... This little ski town truly has gorgeous views and is in a very beautiful natural setting. I wish we had been able to stay for more than just one night, but I’m glad we got a chance to go! Getting around is easy on foot. The town has lots of cafés and little shops. It also has a great outdoor gear store and a large shoe shop! When we were there a concert was being played and it was lovely to hear it from the outside of the structure where it was being played. Bagneres-de Bigorre is a place of healing and chambre des Pamlmier is the perfect place to stay. With only two rooms it is a quiet retreat in a beautiful setting, yet close walking distance to the town. The hostess Christine goes out of her way to make guests comfortable. Age accommodated my gluten free and lactose free needs. The spa in Bagneres de Bigorre is worth a visit and I recommend bringing an extra towel. Font Romeu was made as a sporting resort in the 1920s.
Font Romeu was made as a sporting resort in the 1920s. Odeillo further down the hill was the original village. Because of the benefits of the healthy air, originally Font Romeu was used as a place to treat patients with breathing problems. That no longer is the case. Now it is a ski resort and also a summer destination. The views are spectacular and the skiing is augmented by many snow cannons.There are also many rambling routes. There are restaurants and shops but these are quite seasonal and often closed in low season. Font Romeu is also a good base from which to visit local towns and villages, also lakes and even the sea, either in France or, slightly further afield in Northern Spain.Guest review byJaneSpain
