Great open space. Very quiet and stunning. Restaurant 43 served excellent food at good prices. The Host and his team were very polite and looked after us very well. Great location for exploring Essex and Suffolk. Flatford Mill was beautiful and Woodbridge a lovely little town on the river.
We were there for a Pirate BBC Essex weekend on the LV18 boat. We mainly stayed around the harbour and pier. It was a lovely place with a gorgeous old cinema and lots of old buildings and history.
McDonald's was nice did not see a lot of Clacton I was working for EssexRaynet at the Clacton airshow but what I did see was very nice everybody was polite all the shopkeepers security emergency services very good, it was a lovely two days
We did not have long there having to get home the next day but we would like to have explored the area .Stisted is a typical North Essex village with easy access to motorways and Stansted airport.
No less dreary than most small towns in south west Essex. Used to be quite posh but now mainly home to loud city boys and girls whose expensive educations seemed never to have included lessons in good manners or social intelligence. Have you seen how they eat? Only good thing? Proximity to London.
Nice place to be, not too rough like some parts of London. If you wanted a train to other parts of South Essex or East London, it’s very cheap and the C2C trains are very frequent. Basildon has some nice restaurants and lots of shops around too.
Harlow Town does not make the blood race and to some would leave a lot to be desired but as a base to see the best that Essex has to offer its second to none. There are so many beautiful small towns, villages and hamlets to see and enjoy they could fill a multitude of picture postcards.
It’s hard to recommend a town based on the fact that I was there for a sad occasion. However, I know Colchester from a year-long stay. It’s not the most beautiful town in the UK and doesn’t impress with its historic town centre. Colchester is definitely vibrant and interesting when people are out and about during the day and especially on the weekend. Colchester is the capital of the county Essex. The Romans built their first settlement there which was the Roman capital of Britain (Camulodunum). The castle, built upon Roman remains, is worth a visit. There is now a new gallery called Firstsite. I haven’t been to the zoo but it is supposed to be rather good. All that having been said, the countryside around Colchester is extremely beautiful and the county Suffolk to the north offers outstanding trips. It was a historically affluent region and bucolic countryside often painted by Constable who was born in the area. Also the painter William Turner hails from Sudbury in Suffolk. Don’t miss out on Leavenham and Bury St Edmunds in the north of Colchester. A trip to Mersey Island should be on the itinerary if one likes Oysters and mussels as well as fresh fish.
Best kept secret of Essex is Southend-on-Sea, innit?! Situated on the north of the Thames Estuary and providing no thoroughfare to places yonder, visitors have a purpose; no passers by or stragglers here. It really is a great town. Boasting the World’s largest pleasure pier (actually a functional pier providing access for RNLI lifeboat crews to water deep enough they can launch a rescue boat in, otherwise exposed for over a mile by mud flats) proudly jutting 1.3 miles or 2.1 km into the tidal waters. Visit Old Leigh with its cockle sheds, ancient pubs and arty farty shops. It’s proud to have sent boats to Dunkirk during WWII. That aside, the weather is good. Lowest rainfall in the country, good summer temps and lots of open space including beaches, parks and woodland. Some excellent pubs and a few good restaurants - The Pipe of Port, one to note.
It’s a nice city, easy to reach from Stansted Airport by a First Essex bus. Regular service to and from Chelmsford. The main shopping area has all the shops you would expect to find in any city. It suited us.

General Manager Lisa and the whole team made me feel like this beautiful spot- in the delightful Essex Village of Stock, itself in the countryside - but so close to London - was like my new home from home. A wonderful building, super friendly staff, a hearty, delivious dinner, excellent full cooked breakfast ( mine was inclusive of room rate - I know some hotels would charge gbp30.00 for such a good breakfast!) and a delightful room, free WiFi - just made me want to rave about this little hidden gem! Keep it up! 😊

Comfortable bed. Attractive room. Stylish curtains. Large bathroom with walk in shower. Generous supply of tea coffee plus 2 bottles of water and two packets of biscuits per day. Great location near town centre, the beach and directly opposite train station. Also near my conference centre at Essex University Southend Campus. All the benefits of a very large and lively Wetherspoons pub. Overall I felt it was a great place place to stay and the staff were very friendly. Recommended.

I love the location of The Compasses. Quiet, rural and in the middle of the Essex countryside. It is a great place to relax when on business. I guess it may not suit everybody being so isolated but I highly recommend as it is well worth the time and effort to get there and I would suggest at least a 1-night stop-over in one of the well-appointed rooms to benefit from the excellent food and guest ales/wines available.

The bed was lovely and comfortable had a good nights sleep would recommend it to anybody else, just right for me nice cup of tea in the morning, this time did not have my breakfast my fault, The owner of the property was nice and polite and helped me thanks very much for all you've done for me for one night. If EssexRaynet gets the job for Marshall at Clacton airshow I'll be looking for a room again next year.

Stayed here for a short break , just to see some sights of Essex and Suffolk . Was very happy with the hotel for the price per night stay it was excellent value . Room comfortable , bonus that breakfast is included . Meals are also served in the dining bar area , all day I think , menu is basic, but the food we had was good . It not far to Dedham or langham where you have a choice of pubs to eat in . Very good .

My son and I enjoyed our stay. Guest House conveniently situated, for visiting London and a relative in Essex, near junction of M25 and A12. I could find no fault with the Guest house. It was comfortable, clean and the bedroom well furnished. The breakfasts were very good. Lighting was good. So many hotels and guest houses offer poor lighting which is useless for reading, but here it was good.

A fabulous hotel. The ideal place to stay if you are visiting anywhere in essex. Perfect central location and straight onto main road routes. Pool is lovely and lots of different areas - sauna/jacuzzi/outdoor and indoor pool/hot-tub/cafe to order stuff from. A really top notch hotel. Rooms large and clean. Bath and separate shower. Nice lounge bar. A great great place.

I stayed there as my wife wanted to be near the University of Essex as she is an alumni there. I think its a bit pricey as the room size is not that spacious. We did not have breakfast at the hotel so no comment here. Overall, its a good experience at the hotel and we love being able to go to and fro to the university at our own time.

The weather which of course is not under their control, but was hot and sunny! The hotel is very comfortable and spacious, the views over the Essex countryside and Thames Estuary were stunning. The village is very pretty. Would stay again. Although I didn't try the restaurant it looked superb and I will try on my next visit.

We use the hotel regularly because it is reliably good. The gym and pool are an enjoyable bonus. This summer, we were very grateful that each room has its own air-conditioning system. It's a good location for London, Stansted and the countryside of East Herts/North-West Essex.

This property is within the vicinity of the town of Colchester, Essex and it only takes 10 minutes to walk downtown. The rooms are big and spacious and all basic amenities are available in the room. Staff were also warm and accommodative.

there is nothing to fault this hotel; from the decor, location, service and the rooms. I would always recommend the Roslin, there is nowhere else like it in this corner of Essex
