Where Monkeys Run Wild
Strategic Gibraltar, a small peninsula overlooking the Mediterranean Sea bordering Andalusia, has long been prized by settlers. It has been under British rule since the early 1700s, though this is a source of contention with Spain.
Gibraltar Airport runway juts out into the Bay of Gibraltar, where dolphins can often be seen. If you arrive via the Spanish border you actually have to cross the runway, so the road gets shut for take-offs and landings!
Dominating everything is the Rock of Gibraltar, from where 360-degree views can extend all the way to Morocco. However, it is perhaps most famous for its colony of Barbary monkeys, Europe’s last wild monkeys. Though nowadays ‘wild’ is a loose term, so keep a keen eye on your belongings in case one makes off with something!
A cable car travels to the Upper Rock and St Michael’s Cave or grotto where Neolithic remains were found. Also underground are miles of visitable tunnels, used for protection in times of siege. At the foot of the rock Casemates Square has open-air restaurants and bars, and British touches like red phone boxes. Nearby is a Moorish castle and one of the luxury Gibraltar hotels.
Due to its size, accommodation is somewhat scarce, meaning Gibraltar hotel deals can be a little hard to come by, so check Booking.com for great prices.
