Lorna the manager treated us like VIPs or long lost family. The pub and whisky selection is amazing as were the whisky enthusiast guests. The food and variety at the restaurant were equally superb.

Very good B&B, very well located, with a comfortable room and a good shower. Fantastic breakfast. An extremely nice supporting room for guests, with a very good infrastructure. Very kind staff. As part of the B&B infrastructure, there is an attached cozy Pub. Drinks can be consumed in a beautiful and relaxing external area, as an extension of the B&B.

Everything was superb and an excellent value. The room has all the facilities of a top-notch bed and breakfast, staff (the MacLellans, all wonderful) was super attentive and a joy to talk to. The heated floor in the bathroom felt like a game-changer. This property is one of a few where we'd be compelled to return to the location just to stay here. Truly rates as a 15 (at least) on a 10-scale.

Loch Gorm is a very comfortable, cosy house (despite the atrocious weather) and we were made to feel completely at home. The location (on the water’s edge) was perfect for our trip, and a short drive from the ferry at Port Askaig. Fiona, our host, was lovely, and always checking that we had everything we needed. The breakfasts were magnificent!

Port Ellen is perfect for whisky lovers.

Port Ellen is perfect for whisky lovers. There are many great distilleries in walking distance (Port Ellen, Ardbeg, Lagavulin, Laphroaig and soon another one) and many more by bus or taxi (but taxis are sometimes hard to get and there is no Uber available).

Bridgend is located about 15 minutes from the ferry terminal in Port Askaig (Islay). The town is centrally located to both the Northern and Southern distillery districts. If you are not a whisky enthusiast, birdwatching, hiking, and great scenery are only a short drive away.

There is a short but pleasant walk of just over half a mile to the little lighthouse on the coast north of the town. The local museum is small but well worth a visit. The locals are friendly and helpful. It's a good jumping off point for visiting sites like Finlaggan Trust and the Cultoon Stone Circle and places like Portnahaven (we saw seals cavorting there). The food at the Port Charlotte Hotel is splendid.

BOWMORE is a good town to make it your base "camp" to go around to visit the distilleries. It meets your basic needs for restaurants, grocery store, pharmacy, post office and a place to get gas. The people were friendly and helpful. For us during our time period for the visit, there was a big street repaving project going on which made the streets very rough to drive on - I believe that this improvement should be finished now. We enjoyed our visit here. The one piece of advice that I would make - is to make reservations for dinner at any place you want to eat at.

This review is for Islay, not just Ballygrant.

This review is for Islay, not just Ballygrant. We rented a car. It was very easy to get around Islay, even driving on the left or on one-lane roads with pull-outs, because there was so little traffic. Our favorite places, outside our amazing lodging at Kilmeny, were the ancient sites and the distilleries. We saw Finnlagen, islands in a loch that were home to the ancient Lords of the Isles, https://www.finlaggan.org/, and the Kildalton Cross, an ancient celtic cross. We visited Laphroig, Lagavulin, Bowmore and Bunnahabhen distilleries. We were concerned that we wouldn't be able to enjoy the distillery tastings if we rented a car, but it is fine. The distilleries all have a "driver" package, where they give only a teensie bit so you can understand the tasting conversations, then give you your whisky to go, in little bottles that hold about twice what they put in the tasting glasses. Book tours and tastings early! The food at the restaurant in the Bridgend Hotel was delicious.

Islay is a beautiful place, we could have spent another week there to fully enjoy the island and the locale. We were focused on whiskey (uisge beatha) but also enjoyed local walks, the woolen mill and local restaurants. Booking is recommended for any meal you're eating in a restaurant. Also if self catering - there are only a couple of Co-op stores (no big supermarket). You can feed yourself but choice is limited.

Pubs/bar - try all of them (only 3 if including Sea Salt Bistro). I only had time to visit one and chose unwisely - the Ardview Inn and wasn't impressed (only a snapshot - maybe depends on the staff at the time) and LOCAL Finlaggan beer there was £2 more than other pubs and inns I visited in the island (over £7 vs £5 elsewhere!) But it's good beer - buy it at the Coop or another pub. Views beautiful from the harbour front. Use the Coop and make your summer picnic on one of the four benches provided. The town up keep is good. Clearly looked after by all involved including local council. 3 mile whisky trail. Get bus back from Ardbeg. But do check out the 4m plus standing stone near Portintruan.

Great little village with the friendliest people throughout.

Great little village with the friendliest people throughout. 3 very good restaurants within walking distance. Bus runs from here to Portnahaven in the South and to the main other towns (Bowmore/Port Ellen) though ends at 6pm. For food, drink and friendly chats recommend The Port Charlotte Hotel, also the live music Sunday & Wednesday. Lochindaal Seafood Kitchen excellent seafood from a short menu. Worth a walk to Port Mor Community Cafe for breakfast.
