I liked Ubud a lot better than Uluwatu and I think it is a very good introduction to Bali. It is extremely chaotic, so having the hotel so quiet and relaxing, slightly tucked away was an excellent combination. Uluwatu is an amazing place! We explored the area by motorbike and taxi, spent our days surfing and relaxing on the beaches, and enjoyed the local restaurants. Bali has changed for the worse since we where there last (before Covid). It is no longer the "awesome value" holiday destination. Most (probably all) the accommodation and eateries are owned by ex-pat Aussies and, as a consequence, the prices you pay for eating out and accommodation are "Melbourne" prices - eg. Spice Mantra entrees are around AU$16 plus about 20% in additional taxes. Maybe the business owners are trying to make up for what they lost during Covid??? The new Icon Bali Shopping Mall is wonderful and opens out at one end onto the Beach. Lovely restaurants and Cafes and also Some High End shops for the Rich Tourists!! However, the road and pedestrian Footpaths out front on the main road ( Jalan Danau Tamblingan) are appalling. Great small island best stay here the longest part of your trip not the shortest, I was here 15 years ago and its hardly changed unlike the rest of Bali. Mushroom beach is defiantly the best place for lazy style island life! If you don't stay in a beach front you may be disappointed with the surroundings and unmade roads around Mushroom bay so stay as close to the beach as possible, Beanbag beach night dining and each beachside restaurant has a small camp fire on the beach at night. Same as everywhere in SE Asia a few steps off the beach and the warungs are 1/2 the price of beachfront food and drinks. Suits couples and families best as there is no nightlife at this end of the island although beachfront has live music most nights! Love the hustle bustle of Legian, we always come back to the same area. Our favourite tattoo shop is Ketut at Black Dragon on Jl padma timur no 7 and our favourite amazing massage place is Rehat day spa underneath the GrandMas hotel. We love bartering with all the local shops and there are heaps of fixed price shops if you just want to shop in peace (like the 100% genuine fake shop opposite Mecure Legian) Sooooooo many food options such as The Deck (yummy satays), The Daily Habit (amazing waffles) or The Pad on Bene (dragonfruit smoothie for the win) and Kenji (Japanese), amazing coffee at Crema or Coffee Melbourne and ice creams at all the little streetside shops.Guest review byTaliaAustralia - 8.0
