- From $115.12 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.6Excellent - What previous guests thought, 1,363 reviewsOur stay of three nights at Hotel Housei was absolutely fantastic. We arrived early in the morning with our train, knowing that we could not check in directly. To not waste time, the staff took us directly to the snow monkeys (for free). Afterwards, we asked for guidance regarding the nearby ski resorts, and the staff helped us to organize our upcoming day. They always drove us to the station (even though it’s just a 5-10 min walk away), or any other nearby location. The onsen is beautiful with a clean inside area with washing a bathing parts, as well as an outside area where you can watch the stars all night. The onsen is open 21 hours a day, and is closed only in the morning 9-12 am for cleaning. It’s naked and gender-divided, as most Japanese onsens are, but there is allegedly one hotel room with a private onsen.Guest review byPhilippSweden
- From $387.34 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.5Exceptional - What previous guests thought, 148 reviewsLoved it, didn’t want to leave. The food was outstanding and the service was amazing. Huge comfortable rooms. They even cleaned our boots for us. The owners are just so lovely and really add to the character of the hotel. Sitting in the hotel outdoor bath while it snowed is hard to beat. My suggestion is stay at least 2 nights and on the final day, leave on the 10.50am train which will give you enough time for one final onsen after breakfast.Guest review bysaraNew Zealand
- Scored out of 10, guest rating 9.1Wonderful - What previous guests thought, 504 reviewsThe staff is truly amazing! The lady who runs the Onsen is a delight. She speaks great english and she is very helpful. They all make you feel very welcoming. The place is neat, everything and everywhere is super clean. You can see that they truly embody the Japanese spirit of putting the heart into everything they do. I'd totally recommend this place to anyone who wants a true Onsen experience.Guest review byRodolfoUnited Arab Emirates
- From $169.29 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.2Wonderful - What previous guests thought, 442 reviewsBest hotel in our Japan trip! Room was enormous and beautiful. The onsen was very nice and they allow tattoos, which is a great plus! You can even book one space privately. The breakfast is traditional Japanese and it is so yummy. I cannot eat fish, and they accommodated my food request (you need to inform them in advance). I 100% recommend it and I would stay here again.Guest review byMartaSpain
- Scored out of 10, guest rating 6.6Pleasant - What previous guests thought, 31 reviewsWeekday breakfast and dinner kaiseki were excellent. The buffet meals on peak days (Saturday, Sunday morning) had a variety of options. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful in answering questions about the area. The club rooms were bigger than expected and included a kitchenette, which came in handy when we arrived late on our first night.Guest review byBramUnited States
- Scored out of 10, guest rating 9.0Wonderful - What previous guests thought, 207 reviewsEverything! The room, the food, the facilities and the staff - all exceptional. They also tended to our special request for vegetarian food very well. We especially enjoyed soaking in the hot bath in our room balcony while it snowed in town. Also, the private dining experience.Guest review bySamkitJapan

For a tourist location, it was hard to find restaurants open, or willing to seat us (a party of five). But in general the food was good and the location was great for hot springs and access to the snow monkey park.Guest review byTimUnited States - 10.0

The Onsen hot springs experience was unique and for anyone wanting to see how the Japanese hold this aspect of their beliefs in such high regard this area is a perfect example and for a couple of days you can immerse yourself in a different cultural and culinary experience that will be the highlight of your holiday and the truest insight of this unique way of life.Guest review byHelen SUnited Kingdom - 10.0
Great little town as a base for seeing the amazing snow...
Great little town as a base for seeing the amazing snow monkeys. The walk to the monkeys was very pleasant (but it is advisable to wear wellingtons as it is very mucky). There are many small Ryokans in the town - sadly all of varying standards. Our recommended one was Tsuyuru Ryokan. Great little place run by the amazing Yoko.Guest review byFionaSouth Africa
