- Scored out of 10, guest rating 9.1Wonderful - What previous guests thought, 504 reviewsThe service as this Ryokan was 10/10, and was the most authentic one we stayed in during our 4 weeks in Japan. The staff were so lovely, and spoke great English. They showed us to our room, and gave us essentially a "room tour" whilst we drank complimentary tea. They gave us a map with nearby restaurants and ammenties noted on it. The private outdoor onsen was SO nice! You book a slot upon arrival, which you can access in the evening with 30 min slots. The onsen was large and the perfect contrast with the fresh cool air in the evening. Yukatas were provided for us as an option to wear around the hotel - both my partner and I are bigger than the average Japanese person (Wife is plus size, I am 6ft 2) and we both comfortably fit into the ones picked out for us. The only thing that threw us was that during breakfast, they cleared the beds from our room - had we known people would go in, we'd probably have neatened the room a bit haha! P.S don't skip the sushi restaurant a few doors down from the hotel. The sushi was EXQUISITE and they even have a phonetic Japanese to English page at the front so you can have a go at ordering properly with the chef.Guest review byAlexanderUnited Kingdom
- Scored out of 10, guest rating 9.0Wonderful - What previous guests thought, 207 reviewsI enjoyed everything the whole experience is amazing. starting with welcoming drink and sweet, and we pick a Yukata. They explain everything and guide us to our room. the staff were extraordinary, super friendly and polite They will go above and beyond to help you. we got upgrade to bigger room, the private hot spring bath was awesome with view on the river. I like the private dining room, they me our special dietary request, the food was so delicious, the chef prepare sushi / egg infront of you it was fun experience. The owner came by herself to greet us and to say goodbye when we were leaving. They even took us to snow monkey park and the station for free. Thank you to all staff I really appreciate all efforts to make my stay unforgettable. I am for sure coming back again.Guest review byEmanSaudi Arabia
- From $131.60 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.8Excellent - What previous guests thought, 880 reviewsGreat location at the heart of ryokan alley, very hospitable hosts that can shuttle you from the Yudanaka Station to their place free of charge (prior reservation needed), nice cozy restaurant with kotatsu (very relevant when it is cold), comfortable ryokan with lots of space and a gas heater. The host was shinning and always smiling, it gave us good mood for two days. Also she helped us out with the reservation for the onsen and gave us a ride to that place and brought us back in an hour. Shibu Onsen Koishiya Ryokan are the best and we will definitely stay here if we ever come back to Japan again. ps we also left some chocolate from our country and asked them to pin it on their big wall in their cafe. we hope you liked the chocolate!Guest review byFiladelfiyaKazakhstan
- Scored out of 10, guest rating 6.6Pleasant - What previous guests thought, 31 reviewsWeekday breakfast and dinner kaiseki were excellent. The buffet meals on peak days (Saturday, Sunday morning) had a variety of options. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful in answering questions about the area. The club rooms were bigger than expected and included a kitchenette, which came in handy when we arrived late on our first night.Guest review byBramUnited States

For a tourist location, it was hard to find restaurants open, or willing to seat us (a party of five). But in general the food was good and the location was great for hot springs and access to the snow monkey park.Guest review byTimUnited States - 10.0

The Onsen hot springs experience was unique and for anyone wanting to see how the Japanese hold this aspect of their beliefs in such high regard this area is a perfect example and for a couple of days you can immerse yourself in a different cultural and culinary experience that will be the highlight of your holiday and the truest insight of this unique way of life.Guest review byHelen SUnited Kingdom - 10.0
Great little town as a base for seeing the amazing snow...
Great little town as a base for seeing the amazing snow monkeys. The walk to the monkeys was very pleasant (but it is advisable to wear wellingtons as it is very mucky). There are many small Ryokans in the town - sadly all of varying standards. Our recommended one was Tsuyuru Ryokan. Great little place run by the amazing Yoko.Guest review byFionaSouth Africa
