The two best things to do in and around Cajamarca: stroll through the historical center and visit Cumbe Mayo.Things to avoid: do not take any pictures of local people at Cumbe Mayo or on your way to the site, because they oblige you to pay and way too much: very annoying and not seen anywhere else in the north of Peru. They get angry and sometimes even aggresive if you do not pay or according to them do not pay enough. Anyway: never make any picture of children here and pay them, because their parents keep them away from school just for that. Go for good food and service and value for money to Salas on the plaza. Good coffee and apple pie at the coffee bar in hotel Jazmines (Amazonas street). Better ignore the older bare-footed lady who always begs for money at the plaza: whatever you`ll give she will always come back next day bare-footed for succesful begging....

We really enjoyed Cajamarca.
We really enjoyed Cajamarca. The old city streets remind me of Cusco. There are some lovely churches and museums. We loved the Cumbemayo tour ( It is a chance to be in nature). Loved the Banos del Inca thermal springs (entrance is tricky to find so ask). We went for a lovely walk from Banos del Inca to Llanarco village. We caught a bus from Cajamarca leaving at 7am (virgen del Carmen) to Chachapoyas and the scenery was fantastic.

Cajamarca is a more laid back than the larger commercial cities and not as touristy as the prime tourist destinations. Very friendly place. Easy to get around by taxi or combi.

We stayed five nights in Casa Mirita. Casa Mirita is located a bit outside of the center in a quiet street, Cajamarca center Is reached very easily with mototaxi. The room in Casa Mirita is basic, the personal atmosphere, provided by Mirita and Vicky, is just fantastic. The breakfast is freshly prepared every day and very good. We can recommend Casa Mirita to everybody who is interested staying in a typical Peruvian home and in experiencing Peruvian hospitality.

Breakfast mas more than you can ask at any restaurant, and it came included in the room price. Staff was very kind to let me use their office meeting room for work video conference. Excellent transportation to the airport. Loved the place, would highly recommend.

Soap and shampoo provided. Solid wifi. They take credit cards (V/MC) with no markup. Eggs, rolls, fresh juice and coffee for breakfast.
