Unless you have the DNA of Edmund Hillary in your blood, you may want to take advantage of tours instead of ball-busting hikes. Most hotels have options for you to sign up with. Really interesting city with great options for visiting a number of natural and historical sites: 2.5 hours to Chavin de Huantar, 2 hours to glaciers and mountain lakes. The city is teeming with travel operators to take you there - there are also colectivos at your own risk. Lots of restaurants of various cuisines, including both tourist-focused places and more local ones.
