A truly stunning city, the atmosphere is incredible and we felt absolutely safe at all times. Prices are as expected higher in restaurants around the main square and close to tourists attractions, however, the bars offer incredible traditional food at a reasonable price. The churches are lavishly decorated to a high standard as is the tradition in Poland, also there are many museums to visit. Be sure to visit the murial, the island of churches and also stay until dusk to see the only gas lamp lighter left in europe, his name is Robert and he's being doing this every evening and morning for the last 16 years. Other attractions are river cruises and the tour of the city in one of the electric mini buses. Ohhhhhh and the gnomes too, over a hundred dotted around the city, children can get a sticker book to record each one they find. As a typical mountain resort, Karpacz is a bit more expensive than your usual Polish town. The town itself is very nice, with nice churches and mountain-style houses. Our main reason for choosing Jelenia Góra was the parkrun which takes place in Park Norweski - the team there was very welcoming. We also enjoyed visiting Chojnik Castle and Perla Zachodu restaurant. Just a city for old people (which happens to be mostly Germans) which happens to have nice mountains next to it. You can ski there but there is not really lots of roads (?). I enjoyed the beautiful views from the viewing towers on the nearby hills (Chelmiec, Borowa, Wzgorze Gedymina). But hiking in this area is not easy. The hills are not very high, but the paths are often very steep and difficult to climb. Restaurants offer a good choice of craft beers. These are generally very good, on contrary to the standard beer production. I can recommend Coolturalna Moontownia (in the old mine area), Zlota Stacja (in the city center) and Jedlinka brewery. At the beginning, I struggled figuring out how to pay for the city transport. In theory, you can buy tickets at the driver but on one occasion the driver was very rude at me when I did not have the exact change. The best possibility is to pay with card. It is easy but first you have to find a special small round black and yellow device, located usually at the middle door. The orange devices around the bus just stamp the paper tickets. The Town has good railway and motorway connections. Features a modern Shopping Centre but many buildings in need of major clean, repairs and maintenance. Zgorzelec is only worth the trip if you are arriving from Poland and want to see the German part of the town (Goerlitz) on the other side of the "Neisse" river. Apart from some Restaurants along the river close to the pedestrian bridge (Altstadtbruecke) there is not much to see or to do on the Polish side really. It's just that you can save some money when you are renting your place and eating your food on the Polish side but be careful and crosscheck the prices with your exchange-rate. Some of those Restaurants near the border make a good living off the German "tourists" for which those prices in Zloty seem cheap, but when you are Polish some of them are simply a rip-off. Just walk for another 5 minutes off the regular tourist-trail and you will find good restaurants with normal prices.Guest review byDavid HessePoland
