Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.

By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

United KingdomThe room was pretty basic, but it is to be expected with such a low price per night. The bathroom was also a bit dark, not sure if the window could be opened for more fresh air to come in. The location is very nice, but if you choose to walk it from the centre, be aware the road is quite steep and it can get exhausting. Other than that nothing really negative about our stay, we would recommend it to others!
Overall we had a pleasant stay, good value for money! The room was clean, the owners very friendly and hospitable and the breakfast was great! It was nice to be able to walk around the castle area at night too due to its location.

United KingdomNothing bad or negative to say about the accommodation
Perched gracefully within the storied walls of Berat Castle, Hotel Kalaja is a rare blend of history, elegance, and warm Albanian hospitality. Though my stay was just for one night, the experience was nothing short of memorable. The setting itself is enchanting, ancient stone corridors, panoramic views of the “City of a Thousand Windows,” and the quiet charm of being embraced by centuries of history. The hotel has preserved this heritage beautifully, pairing rustic authenticity with refined comfort. My room was tastefully arranged, with thoughtful details that reflected both tradition and modern ease. The stone walls and wooden accents gave an atmosphere of timeless charm, yet all the necessary amenities were at hand. Waking up within the fortress walls, to soft light spilling across Berat’s landscape, was truly magical. Service was as gracious as the surroundings: warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. Even in a short stay, the staff ensured every need was met with effortless courtesy. For anyone wishing to immerse themselves in Berat’s history without compromising on elegance and comfort, Hotel Kalaja is a perfect choice. It is not simply accommodation, but part of the very story of the city itself.

United KingdomVery good location inside Berat Castle. The room had air conditioning. The ensuite bathroom was fairly small, but fine. One of the highlights was the breakfast, which was substantial. It was good value for money, especially as it was high season when I stayed.

United KingdomService was without a smile, but very functional. Not a negative, but it feels a bit strange to be driving right into the castle gates past pedestrians! When you get through there, there is rough parking to the right, next to the castle walls. Then 100m walk to guest house.
Lovely rooms, air con, cracking location let's you wander around the castle area in the evening at its best. Great (and big) breakfast.

AzerbaijanIt would have been nice to have a kettle in the room, but overall everything went well and we had a great stay.
The hotel is located right in the heart of Berat Castle, just next to the famous Klea Restaurant. The location is perfect for exploring the historic area. Breakfast was absolutely wonderful. We really enjoyed it. A lovely and memorable stay overall!

BelgiumAbsolutely nothing :)
The staff was very nice, humble & helpful! We felt very welcomed by the owner & other staff. Rooms were good for the price, location was amazing, we felt like we were back in the past with the castle’s surroundings :) Breakfast was delicious & with fresh, local products. It wasn’t self service, so you could just sit back & relax on the nice patio. Definitely recommend staying here during your visit in Berat!

United KingdomWhen showering, tend to likely flood the entire bathroom, esp for a tall person. Watch the windows.. as a lot of insects/mosquitoes can get in during evening times. Cash only payment on checkout.
Simple yet clean room - parking provided. The hotel is located within the castle walls, fantastic walks around the place - don't miss the sunset views. Staff friendly and helpful. Breakfast was fantastic. The journey by car through the castle gates is an adventure in itself [google maps took us through the local high-gradient cobbled streets :-| ]. The view is enchanting with cafes and viewpoints. You can stroll through the narrow streets and shop at the markets inside the castle. Restaurants serve authentic dishes at reasonable prices.

SpainIt's not negative but just two have in mind that the way from the castle to the tarn is narrow and approx. 30 minutes walking distance so it's better to use the car to move. I would choose it again without any doubt.
The place is located inside the cattle walls and gives the opportunity to visit it when the mist of tourists are gone. The room was nice and clean and the breakfast was delicious, varied and big. The person that attends the guesthouse was very friendly and the view from the room and the terrace were really nice.

CanadaWe had read reviews about how friendly and helpful the staff were - other than the man who changed our rooms, we found them rather cold. But they did help with things if we asked.
Well located. Our welcome was rather indifferent at first and we were given a smaller room than we had booked initially. Another staff member turned up and moved us to the correct room, which was very nice. Breakfast was good.

IrelandI couldn't find fault with this fabulous little hotel.
Lovely little hotel in an amazingly location within the walls of Berat Castle complex. Stunning views over the castle walls. Breakfast was huge and plentiful with freshly cooked eggs two ways, sausage, breads, gorgeous locally made cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, cucumber sweet pastries and a bunch of grapes plus really decent coffee. All served in the outdoor veranda overlooking the castle. The staff were very discreet but friendly, the twin room was clean and easily spacious enough for a solo traveller like me or a couple, and bathroom/shower was in good working order. Good A/C too.

SpainThe site is absolutely well located. It is within the castle walls and there is no more pleasant environment to be in in the entire city. The staff's attention was very good, and the breakfast was very very good. Comfortable beds and a feeling of well-being in that place when you wake up in this place. 100% recommended.

Czech RepublicAll was great!
I can warmly recommend this place - nice, comfortable room with elegant bathroom and huge & tasty breakfast in the morning in absolutely great location- directly in the castle! You have to drive through 2 gates to get in and both parking and exploring the castle is free. You need max 1 hour for that.

Hungaryeverything was perfect for us
The accommodation is in an excellent, very cosy location, and what is very important in Berati the parking problem is solved. In the evening the room can be a bit noisy because of the nearby restaurants, but for us it was not a problem. It was nice to listen to the authentic music. Breakfast was plentiful and delicious.

United KingdomOnly downside could be the pub nearby which gets crowd / plays music till late. But we were so tired after trekking all the way up from the old town that we just passed out
Excellent location - with ample parking right outside the hotel. Breakfast in the morning is very hearty (croissant, fried & boiled eggs, coffee, sausages, cucumber / tomato / feta, bread). Room itself was quite spacious for 3 of us & beds are all comfortable to sleep in

NorwayGood location. This is right inside the fortress and therefore easy to get around for sightseeing. It's also on top of the hill and far away from the noise of old town Berat. You can drive all the way to the hotel and parking was easy. Breakfast was sumptuous. We actually had to tell the owner to reduce the amount of breakfast we got :-)
