A unique experience not to be missed!

The Estancia is remote, so if you don't have your own wheels, it can be a bit of a hassle getting into town and back. But they offer free shuttle service twice a day and reasonable rates for taxi service from the Estancia. If you take a taxi from town, be careful--supposedly taxis are regulated with set rates, but we found they all charge something different, so don't be afraid to haggle.

Estancia La Quinta offers a magical authentic experience of a rural Estancia with an interesting history. Patricia, the duena's grandfather founded the Estancia in 1905 decades before there was a town of El Chalten. The rooms are comfortable and clean and breakfast is great--there is a cozy common area upstairs with beautiful views of the wide open spaces surrounding the ranch. The property is accessible to several nice trails. We loved feeding the baby calves, a truly unique experience, and also enjoyed the Mate ceremony--our only complaint is that we couldn't stay longer!

WIFI is available in communal areas only, and VERY slow. While this may add to the experience, it poses a serious challenge if you need internet to plan your outings and next leg of your trip. The challenge is amplified by the fact that the nearest wifi outlet is some 3-4 km away. Booking.com rates given in ARS are not respected. I ended up paying for multiple forex conversions, which added some 15% to my bill.

Staff, setting, quality of room, bed and linen. Staff went out of their way to help, and very well accommodated my dietary requirements (gluten and lactose free). (the gluten and lactose free cookies at breakfast were great!) Cows roam in the lawn, and guests get a chance to feed the calves. The hotel runs a cultural programme, eg. history lecture and introduction to the ritual of the national drink 'Mate'.

Dinner in their old historic Casco house. Allthough the house was interesting to see with lots of memorabilia of ancient times, the restaurant was far beneath expectation, if not bad. Service was very unwelcoming, the food below Argentinian standards. Second night we ate in El Chalten village.

Very comfortable stay, spacious rooms, very friendly and helpful staff. Only 5' by car from village El Chalten. Very quiet and nice setting. Bonus: mate tasting and demonstration. Breakfast ok.

Anyone with interest in local history of this region should stay at least two nights at this place. Hotel has free shuttle to/from town/trail heads in El Chaltén. Owner, who are the granddaughter of the first settler to Le Chaltén, do guided tours around the property that has been in the family for 3 generations. First settler, Halvor Halvorsen, from Telemark in Norway stayed with his family year around in Lago Viedma/El Chaltén area for decades until their deaths. Beautiful view from the relaxing common area living room upstairs.

Really nothing - the property is homely, clean and comfortable and offers excellent value for money.

Perfect location just before you enter the township of El Chalten. Unlike many of the luxe $800 a night 'Estancia' this for me is the real thing - the owner, his wife and son not only farming some 500+ Hereford cattle but offering a homely and warm welcome to their property AND an excellent restaurant. On arrival Alfredo took time to ask us what we wanted to accomplish during our visit in terms of walking, hiking etc and then took time to carefully explain each of the various options and the level of ease or difficulty (none of them involved him in trying to sell a tour it was simply for our benefit). He also clearly explained how they produce their own energy so that from midnight to 5am there is no power in the house "so get everything charged before or after!". The high bonus of no power on a clear night is that you can sit out in deckchairs and marvel/cry/gasp at the magnificence of the Milky Way from one horizon to the other with no man-made light source to diminish it. Alfredo offers pick up and drop off in El Chalten but having your own vehicle is definitely an advantage.

Internet connection and phone network are poor.

La Quinta is a few kilometers out of town overlooking the plains and close to Lago Viedma. La Quinta offers free rides to Chalten at 9 am and back to the property at 6 pm. A taxi ride would cost about ~ 12USD (200 ARS). The distance is also walkable either along the road or across the hill passing the Eagle and Condor outlooks. The owner is very friendly and helpful. The rooms very clean and the mattress is good too. There is an upstairs common area with a big window front looking out over the plains furnished with comfortable sofas. La Quinta still has about 800 cattle and I believe you can get a tour of the ranch.

Alfredo and his family are wonderful hosts. This is not a traditional hotel, since it is on a cattle ranch in a remote location just outside of El Chalten. There are cows and a horse that graze right in front, and no other buildings or roads visible from the estancia, making it a truly unique experience. The rooms are comfortable and clean, and there is a very nice continental breakfast served every morning. Alfredo runs a courtesy shuttle twice a day into town, and accommodates pick ups and drop offs at other times for a very reasonable cost. There is wifi in the common areas, but it is very slow, like everywhere else in Chalten.

    Perfect!

The Estancia La Quinta is a very special place - the property was once a sheep farm and, in to running a lovely small hotel, the family that lives there also raises cattle. In fact, the delicious beef served at the hotel restaurant is all from cattle raised right at the hotel! The rooms are comfortable, the owners are helpful and accommodating and staying at the Estancia is a completely wonderful and different experience. Although located outside of town, Alfredo provides a free shuttle in and out of town upon arrival and departure, as well as every morning and evening. We really enjoyed coming back to the Estancia to relax after long days of trekking in the beautiful areas around El Chalten!

Do not book with this hotel. We booked an extra room for friends, over 3 months in advance, on bookings.com and we missed the fact that we'd booked a non-refundable room.. When our friends backed out because of health a couple weeks later, we asked for a refund and offered to pay a penalty. After much back and forth, we were refused ANY refund on a $150/night room (booked for 3 days = >$450) well in advance. Additionally, this Estancia is not in the town where most of the hotels are and from which you can start hikes. We, fortunately, had a car.

The only justification for being out of the town up an unmade road would be for the interest of staying on a proper working estancia, farm. This is not, it has been converted into a hotel, quite basic and soulless and restaurant not open during our 6 night stay. It is probably also the only place which doesn't have views of the fantastic Fitzroy range that we all go to see! Owner tried hard to be helpful with walking routes and had a couple of cows and a horse hanging around outside, but he can't compete with the new hotels in the town. It is terribly overpriced for what is basically a bed and breakfast ( satisfactory but only just) in a characterless hotel. Disappointing, next time we go we will stay in the town itself there are plenty of different places to choose frm conveniently situated and with lots of character and life.

Room clean and a good size. Owner and breakfast assistant pleasant.
