How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.

We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive info (e.g. emails, phone numbers, credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (i.e. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.

Verified reviewThe hotel location was very good. In terms of access to Old city as well as other areas.
The breakfast was very good except for the following: they used smelly eggs, which may be normal for them but for us dont ask. So, I believe they should try to avoid them. Secondly, 1 morning they served Mushrooms, the whole area had its smell.

Verified reviewBreakfast was simply superb. So many wonderful choices. The hotel ambience, decor and vibe is excellent. Full credit to the management team who designed this very beautiful interior. The staff were very good. In particular I wish to acknowledge Nahid (front of house manager) who went out of his way to help sort an issue we had with a tour company not to mention his pleasant manner and very good english. Also Zaur (front of house manager) again, very helpful.
Only one issue but completely out of the hotels control. The machines used on the street during the night to prepare for the Grand Prix were noisy.

Rooms are too small. Not suitable with kids. I stayed in MovenPick for 3 days where the rooms were bigger and convenient plus the breakfast options were also very little and place was also not too big. Due to formula 1, roads towards this hotel are also blocked , you would be stuck in the traffic for hour and then you will have to walk for like 5,6 mins with luggage to reach this location.

Verified reviewThis was our second stay at The Merchant Baku during our Azerbaijan trip. Breakfast has improved with the omelet station operational, which we appreciated. However, the staff could be more attentive in checking if guests need anything or if the food is satisfactory.
Despite being promised a better room for our second stay, the front desk ignored our request, and the A/C was not working. We reported the issue at checkout.

Verified reviewThis was one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in for travel. The location is perfect, just outside the walls of the Old City. The hotel is immaculately clean and comfortable. It's a perfect mix of historic and modern (but not "ultra" modern where comfort is sacrificed at the altar of design). The bed was the perfect level of firmness. The bathroom is large and modern. The room was large sufficient room for clothes storage. The breakfast was great. But the star attraction at this hotel is the warm, welcoming and very helpful staff. I can't name them all, but I will single out Nahid the restaurant manager for being helpful about Baku and not just presenting an awesome breakfast buffet with a nice variety of options. Gasim at the front desk very helpful both for check in and for check out. (His shift kept rotating so I saw him for both). Ismayil (I know I am spelling his name wrong) was awesome as a server at the restaurant and breakfast buffet. He is consistently friendly and moves at the triple the speed of everyone around him. No one is slow. But Ismayil is above and beyond fast.
I did not figure out how to use the Azerbaijani bidet. That's it. I can't come up with any real, true negatives.

Verified reviewOne of my favourite hotels. Stylishly decorated and furnished it has an excellent bar/restaurant area that serves great breakfasts and bar snacks. Staff are friendly and helpful throughout. Rooms are sizeable and comfortable with well-appointed bathrooms. It's a great location for exploring the corniche and the old town and also has direct access to the pedestrian street with multiple food and beverage options. Wifi is good.
