How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive info (e.g. emails, phone numbers, credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (i.e. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
Guidelines and Standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

Verified reviewA spacious, clean, comfortable and modern apartment. Lift (elevator) access. Washing machine. Quiet location but an easy walk into the town centre. Well stocked kitchen.
To get to the town centre you needed to walk past the brothels - not sure how that would be late at night. No air conditioning, fan provided in living area (but because it was quiet, windows could be opened).
Thank you for your review! Yes, the red-light district is not far from the apartment. However, there are plenty of ways to avoid it - which isn’t really necessary, since the area is one of the most monitored in the city and therefore probably one of the safest, also at night. Thanks for staying with us and welcome anytime!

Verified reviewThe apartment interior is very good, spacious, modern, well supplied and equipped. It is not too far from the tourist heart of Ghent, about a 15 minute walk.
Loud traffic noise from the street affects the living area and kitchen, but fortunately not the bedroom at night as it is at the rear of the apartment. The apartment became quite hot because the sun pours into the kitchen and living area in the afternoons and summer evenings and really heats the place up a lot. This is the "sunny" feature as advertised, but we found the heat uncomfortable. I can understand them not having A/C but a fan would have been appreciated.
Dear Robert, the street can indeed be busy at times, which, with open windows, can allow the city's hustle and bustle to enter the living room. Open windows make the effects of global climate change ever more noticeable, also in Ghent, even though the apartment has double glazing. During a heatwave like the one that unfortunately occurred during your stay, it's certainly a good idea to provide a fan. We've ordered one - future guests will be grateful to you! Moreover, we will soon be closing the apartment to make way for a planned full façade renovation, which aims to better address the climate challenges that lie ahead. Thank you for your stay, and we're sorry for the heat!

Verified reviewThe apartment was well equipped with good kitchen appliances, as well as a washing machine. Unfortunately it is near an area of window prostitutes which we were unaware of. Additionally there is no a/c or even a fan so one must keep the windows open for any sort of cooling in the warmer weather such as June, 2025. Lots of midges and mosquitoes this way. As we were departing the hydro went out and we were unable to use the elevator. So, down 2 flights of circular staircase with our luggage. Not quite so easy for seniors! Lots of construction in the building starting at 7.30 am. without notice. Exterior sidewalk torn up which was a bit difficult to manoeuvre around .Rather disappointed.
As above. We have travelled a fair bit and we believe that with a few changes this could be quite a good spot to stay. Definitely a fan .. a bit unsafe having to sleep with all the windows open.

Verified reviewWasher/Dryer was a bonus. Handy to many tourist spots, food options, public transport etc Nice touch with bottle of wine & chips in room. Plenty of tea and coffee options.
The cooling system struggled. It wasn't a hot day when we arrived but the room was 26 degrees. Despite turning the cooling down low it took two days to get it down to 22.5degrees. Too hot for sleeping. Need to leave the windows open before guests arrive. No other problems.

The layout is strange. I think it just must have previously been a doctors office or something. No door on the shower room.
Hi Delaine, Thanks you for your positive review! The layout of the apartment is the fruit of my own imagination, since I am an architect. The objective was to use the available surface as efficient as possible :) Thank you for your stay and welcome back anytime!

Verified reviewLarge apartment with everything you need in the kitchen. Nice position. Close to bus stops.
The address indicated is at number 139, but on the building wall there is the number 131. Host sent a long list of rules and duties that that makes you feel to be a housekeeper not a paying guest. The bed was not made, no linen, but several stranger’s hairs on the mattress. Looked around to find clean linen and towels. In a corner big amount of dirty linen and towels used by other guests.
Dear Viviana, We are terribly sorry regarding the cleanliness of the apartment, which is the contrary of how we normally welcome our guests. We had an mix-up in the reservation schedule and therefore the cleaner wasn't notified of your arrival. If we had been aware, we would have immediatly come to your rescue! Please provide us with your bank account details so we can reimbourse you 50% of your stay to compensate for this incovenience. With regards to the housenumber: The building houses apartment numbers 131 to 141, apartment 139 is amongst these, but this specific number is not mentioned on the building façade. We are aware of this, which is why we provide photos of the building in the booking-ad, and in the instruction message on how to access the building.

Verified reviewThe flat was very spacious and had a comfortable sofa, the kitchen had plenty of crockery, cutlery and pans and it was all very clean. It was nice to have cleaning products. It was very kind of our host, Noor, that we were allowed to stay one extra hour on our leaving day. 12 minutes walking to the cathedral area. Nice little market 10m away.
No door in the bathroom. The lift and stairs were not clean. The flat was just next to the red-light district, so not very happy to come back at night and had to go round the area. I found quite ridiculous all those instructions to leave the flat( remove bed linen, empty the fridge, put everything in the laundry basket and the rubbish)

Verified reviewThe apartment was in a good location, a short walk from the main attractions in the city. It was quiet in the evening even though it was next to a main road. It was spacious, clean, with a well-equipped kitchen, and it was helpful for there to be some oil, salt and pepper, teabags, etc. and toiletries for guests to use.
We got off to a bad start as the door to the apartment block wouldn't open for us even though we were using the correct key from the key safe. We didn't get any response when we messaged and phoned the host in order to get access to the property, and no one in other apartments was in to answer the buzzer. As a result we had to quickly find a left luggage facility so we could do the walking tour we were booked in to do. We were also concerned we might not be able to access the apartment at all and then would have to find last minute accommodation somewhere else for that evening. Someone, not the host, did get back to our messages 3 hours later to let us know it was a known issue and that, once opened by someone from inside, the problem should be resolved. When we returned to the apartment later in the day we were able to get in straight away, and didn't have any issues with the door after that. However it was always a concern whenever we came back to the apartment, and did mean we spent much of our first day in Ghent traipsing backwards and forwards with our luggage. This poor communication was disappointing. A couple of things for others to be aware of: 1) when we first arrived we found that one of the streets near to the apartment, Belgradostraat, is part of the city's red-light district. It was easy to avoid going down that street for the rest of our stay, and we never felt unsafe at any point. There were some excellent cafes on an adjoining street which we did go to and never had any issue. Not something that should put anyone off going to the apartment, but helpful to know. 2) we hadn't realised that the host does use the property themselves when not let out, and therefore it contains a lot of their personal items. This did make it feel a bit less comfortable than a property that is solely used as a professional holiday-let. Again, not a problem, but may be helpful to be aware of this before booking the accommodation.
Dear Matthew, This is Matthias, who contacted you regarding the key. I am the owner of the apartment, and Noor is responsible for daily management. Noor however also has a full-time job (as do I), and was temporarily unavailable to respond to your message. We apologize for this inconvenience. Like Noor, I also receive notifications from our guests. When she is unavailable, I take the initiative to respond on her behalf. The issue with the lock was previously unknown to me. After reading your message, I contacted all the building's residents through our WhatsApp group. Several of them eventually confirmed that a problem had recently been detected and explained how to resolve it, which I then forwarded to you. This was a technical issue that we could not have anticipated, but we will take the necessary measures to address it. We apologize once again for the inconvenience. Regarding the “Belgradostraat”: Indeed, the "red-light district" is located a few 100m from the apartment. For guests who may find this offensive, we will mention it in the apartment description. Nonetheless, this area is perhaps one of the safest in the entire city, as it is constantly monitored through CCTV and police patrols. As you pointed out, the area is very easy to avoid, but as a visitor, you could indeed end up there by chance, since there is no signage indicating it. Personally, I believe it is part of the city's "folklore" and serves as a testament to the social layers that, in other cities, remain hidden and thus often unsafe. It's not like that in Ghent. The apartment is indeed my home when I’m in Ghent, which happens about once every three months and never for more than a day or two, as I am full-time expatriated abroad for work. You mentioned the "many personal items" present in the apartment. If I’m not mistaken, the only personal items are my surfboard and wetsuit, which are not intended for guest use. However, if guests would like to use them, they certainly can :) All other items are not personal and are available for guests to use. Noor and I are happy to provide coffee, tea, snacks, cooking ingredients, bottled water, as well as various hygiene products and even some medications because we don’t like arriving at a completely empty accommodation ourselves. All these items are available for our guests at no charge, unlike, for example, a hotel minibar. We are not renting out an apartment-hotel, but rather a home, where we hope our guests can feel immediately at ease and won’t need to search for a pharmacy if their journey to Ghent has given them a headache! Thank you for your review, which helps us to further improve. Matthias

The personal items and lack of apartment number made it a bit uncomfortable. We weren’t sure if we were in the right spot and felt like we were staying in someone else’s place. The locks were also hard to work. The bed and bedding were uncomfortable.

Verified reviewSpacious and well stocked with everything for a comfortable stay in walking distance to all Gent’s attractions. The host has thought of all the little things providing the basic pantry items, first aid and Toiletries. Easy check in.
Not a don’t like, just an alert. Keep clear of the security zone inside the lift. When we arrived with all our bags we triggered this until cleared. Our host responded immediately to our cry for help and had is out of this stressful spot in minutes.
Thanks for your great review Linda, even though you got stuck in the elevator for a short while... It's an old model and if you are unaware, the safety system is easily activated... I guess at some point we'll update the whole system (when all residents agree to do so), but in the mean time your short discomfort has proven that although old, the elevator is still in good working order and safe ti use (looking at the bright side here :))! Thanks for your stay and nonetheless our apologies!

Verified reviewWe stayed at the apartment for a weekend. It is 10 min walk to the historical center and also easy to get there by tram or bus. Supermarkets, coffeeshops and other necessities are a short walk away (don`t miss the lovely Lousbergmarket). The apartment has everything you need and more - it feels like an actual home, not like a holiday place. Well equipped kitchen, very nice walk-in shower. Everything was very clean. Getting into the apartment was very easy, the keys were in a keybox accessible by code.
The front room faces a rather busy street - the bedroom is in the back and quiet, so that was fine. Be aware that there is an elevator but it is quite small, if you are more than 2 people or have a lot of luggage you will have to take turns. The stairs are narrow and steep.
Hi Sara, thank you for your review! It's always nice to hear our guests are happy :) We do hope that one day all cars will be electrical which should limit traffic noise in the city!
