How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive info (e.g. emails, phone numbers, credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content

To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.

Daily quick cleans and top up of the free soda and water was also a bonus! Helpful and friendly staff available anytime at the main counter. Close to both bus routes and a train station that connects you to any major/popular spot in the city

Verified reviewSuch a clean hostel. I had my own room, and it felt truly like an upscale hotel inside. The common area is nice and big to sit and study or do work etc. Might even meet people. They have completely free to use washing machines on the top floor, which was very nice and a very small gym and mini bar. You also were able to buy water and juices and teas, etc, that they sold separately.
I dont know if this is a cultural thing, the new generation of backpackers thing or just specifically this hostel but I stayed for a long time (5 days) and I was so upset that I each time I would come down to the common area it would sometimes be absolutely packed but with people just on their phones and laptops... not one person talking to each other. I only met a couple of really cool people my first 2 nights, but after, I didn't see anyone, just locals. If you are here for a backpacker experience to meet people, this is definitely not it. I was here in Shanghai for work but stayed in a hotel specifically to meet people as well, but I would go downstairs, look around, and just get annoyed that it was the same thing each time. People just stuck on their devices. So I would just go on a walk by myself or go right back upstairs. I don't know how you fix that problem, but it was very disappointing and practically ruined a big part of the meeting people experience you look forward to in a hostel. But honestly, besides that, the hostel was great and really clean.

Verified reviewMay was so friendly and acomodating. The staff was very friendly and helpful. It was very comfortable and there was lots of other travelers there.
The location was a little out of the way from the major tourist sights, but still very close to the railway station so accessible. What I mean by that is that I didn't feel like I was staying "in the boutique part of Shanghai," but instead in more of a blue collar, college part of town. But is was a great bargain for a comfortable stay, so in my mind that was the trade off. I say this as a foreigner who isn't so used to China infrastructure. There was a great mall close by and in 25 minutes you were in downtown Shanghai.

Verified reviewA proper hostel that loves being a hostel! They give you loads of freebies to ensure your comfort. The beds were sturdy and private. There were ample bathrooms, and the showers were incredible, very hot and secluded. The laundry was free! I have never seen that before. The overall vibe was sociable and fun. Lots of beer options!
The rooms were great, but once you put everyone's big bags in there, the floorspace is completely covered. The breakfast was pretty good but unsubstantial, at least for my stomach.

Verified reviewOne of the best hostels I’ve ever stayed in. Staff was incredibly friendly. Super super clean. I stayed in a dorm (3rd floor) and there was absolutely nothing to complain about. Quite environment. The AC in the room saved my life while the outside temperature was a bit above 40 degrees Celsius. You will get toiletries and even some slippers 😂 and a free drink on top. What a service!

Verified reviewI took the individual room. It was very spacious and super clean with some complimentary drinks. The staff speaks a very good English (which is very rare even in top rated hotel).
There is a bar but most of local customers just chill on their laptop so difficult to interact and make friends. Not a lot of option around in the neighborhood but walking distance from train station.

Verified reviewI had a great stay at Dayin Youth Hostel - Old Town. The staff were amazing—always friendly and genuinely went out of their way to make me feel at home. The location was perfect, with two metro stations and a main railway station nearby, making it easy to get around. The city center wasn’t far away either, which was really convenient. The hostel itself was clean and well-maintained, adding to the overall comfort of my stay.
One issue was that many Chinese guests use the hostel as a hub to look for jobs, resulting in some rooms being occupied for weeks with personal belongings piling up and causing unpleasant odors. Some roommates were inconsiderate—they ate in the room, played music or videos late at night, and even smoked in the bathrooms at night. I also had a difficult experience with one Chinese fellow guest who snored loudly. I tried to wake him because he had fallen asleep in an uncomfortable position. The next day, when I mentioned his snoring to him, he denied it and reacted aggressively and even involved the police because I had tried to wake him up, which forced me to move to another room. Chinese Police, better not! Fortunately, the staff were very kind and helped me switch to a better room.

More of a dorm hotel than a hostel. Also not very international, mostly Chinese folk. Other guests always left the dorm door open and were always inconsiderate about the noise they made, left toilets unflushed.
