Relaxed, peaceful, homely apartment in spa hotel, convenient for hill rambles and historic Bayreuth

There were some niggles with the chalet facilities particularly the solar powered hot water in the kitchen tap which was problematic all week. The hotel were very willing to send their handyman but we didn't want the disruption and figured out a way to get it to work by twiddling the knobs in a certain order. No laundry facilities was a bit of a nuisance No iron or ironing board - though hotel lent us these Chair missing from the balcony (the hotel fetched us one from the cafe at my suggestion) No A/C so apartment was very hot - this is pretty normal in many central European countries I have found - A/C is bad for the environment I guess English speaking was mixed - maybe another prod to encourage me to learn German

We were staying here for the Bayreuth Opera Festival (35 minutes away by car) - it was a very convenient arrangement and much cheaper than trying to get accommodation in Bayreuth itself; great value for a week's stay The hotel is a ski chalet so it's quiet in summer and close to walks and rambles in the forests Homely, relaxed and peaceful place; the hotel is the owner's home and it felt like that rather than a hotel business; lovely informal gardens around the hotel with quirky ornaments and lots of nice touches Family run, informal and friendly staff - very willing and keen to please (if occasionally slightly homespun business arrangements eg the chef carrying up the ironing board as no-one else was around) Very spacious apartment with small balcony right at the hotel was a great arrangement for us; tiny kitchen but well lit and equipped (even a kettle which you don't always get in Germany!) Wonderful indoor swimming pool and fully equipped spa - free for guest use (including those staying in the apartments) Location in the hills is cooler than at sea level and trees to south help shield the properties from sun's heat in summer Hotel is in walking distance from a large Edeka supermarket and Fichtelberg's facilities (post office, bank) and close to the scenic Fichtelsee Free parking close by; easy to get a space

They had lost our booking. REestaurant was not consistently open - though food was good when it was - place seemed almost shut.
