    The "upgrade" from hell

    • Junior Suite

    • Submitted via mobile

The aircon wasn’t working, the person sent to instruct me how to use it, didn’t know how, the windows could be opened, but right out to nightlife noise. Dust everywhere. And cleaning didn’t really do anything else than change bin and towels. Have had better stays before at the same hotel, but this time was my last. Memo to self: never accept an upgrade without having seen the room. Fair to say, after describing my experience at checkout, I was given a discount and breakfast free of charge. But terrible stay in the Suite.

So I booked a junior suite and was told at arrival, that I was upgraded to the suite because everything else was booked. Of course I accepted, but shouldn’t have.

Very noisy seagulls outside our room, but storms at sea drove them inland. Not much anyone could do about that!

Breakfast at the Royal was very good. Excellent selection from the buffet, although I found the muesli overly sugary. The conservatory setting was light, quiet and calming, a great way to start the day.

Wifi only worked in certain positions, there are only a few parking spots next to the church, the nearest parking structure is 10 minute walk.

The hotel is located very centrally, near the quarter latin neighbourhood, with all the nice restaurants and bars, next to the old cathedral (worth a visit) and the large shopping area. The style is very classic with quirky details, like the huge aquarium as a front desk, and the oldest elevator in northern Europe. The room was great, very roomy and silent. Service was really friendly and the room rate was perfect. We would come here again.

Parking can be issue. Do not leave your car even for 5 minutes where it’s not supposed to be. Local law enforcement is very eager when it comes to parking tickets.

Staff was not very helpful. We had a problem with the bathroom, but no one called a plumber. Instead the reception girl came to the room to try and fix the problem (!!!!!). Of course she could not, but she did not do anything thereafter. Rooms were not very clean. Hair on the sink and an empty chocolate packaging behind a chair.

Seagulls having a different thought about when to get up, but hey you can’t have it all ;)

You feel at home right when you enter the hotel. I do 120 hotel nights a year, but this stay really made me feel in another world. Love the romantic 20’s luxury style. The rims are extremely cosy, the chair and the poof I really used to read a book with a cup of tea. And the bed was just the hardness I like. Last but not least, the staff was super friendly, and helping where they could. And great breakfast. Big compliment for this great hotel.

Only one thing: room is too dark, there is only a few light inside. So it is very dark for all activities (working by computer, phone, chating, reading at the desk.)

Very good location in the heart of the city, close to everything. Big rooms with large, comfortable bed, two big armchairs. Kettle in the room is an extra point. Only basic facilities, none of the little extras one usually expects in a suite. Things (electricity, toilets) tended to break down or didn't work properly. We had to request the various extras that should have been provided. Dinner was very pleasantly served but not very good. Breakfasts were much better. We were misinformed regarding parking and ended up paying a parking ticket - beware!

All hotels in Aarhus are quite expensive - this one is no exception.

Rooms opulent, interior a little dated but charming. Reception staff is friendly and helpful, sorted a minor problem on the first day swiftly. Internal communication seems to work well - I asked for breakfast to be added on at check-in, but due to a room-change this must have gotten lost. The waitress at breakfast hence asked me to sign the bill, but after my complaint she promised to check with reception. On the second morning, everything was sorted. Btw breakfast is very good in a great location - love the feature of the tree in the middle! Sadly did not get to explore the sauna.

I had ordered for a table in the restorant, but there wasn't anything for us. I am really sure as I telephone the day before. And then no service. After a while - more than 10 minutes - the manager arrive. We could have a very bad position with a extra table or we could just go and find one other place in town. We do. Until 0130 at night there was very high music at the hotel also in the room. All this isn't ok, when you pay 3400 danish kroner for a room.
