Facilities way under par for a €250 room : no WiFi (meant to be available in common area but only a weak single by the reception - nothing in other areas), no TV. We were told it was purposeful - I don't see why modernity cannot be mixed with historical heritage and anyway, it should be clearly highlighted on the hotel website then as these are now expected as standard. The extra bed for my teenage son was a very uncomfortable sofa (fitted sheet would not stay on, bed kept tilting & falling) and I was charged an extra €42 a night for it.

Great location with amazing view on the ocean and harbour. Nice and large rooms. Good breakfast. Beautiful historical building. Well maintained pools, both indoors & outdoors.

WiFi only available at reception, not in rooms--no TV in rooms. The excuse was that it's not possible to do this because of its being such an old building with thick walls. We have stayed in remote hilltop Moghul fortresses many hundreds of years old in India, with walls over 3m thick and in ancient former merchants' houses with massively thick stone walls in the middle of Turkey, and all these can manage to install WiFi. The front desk person who was trying to convince us of the impossibility of the Citadelle having modern communications became quite rude and aggressive, telling us that we had no idea about such matters! His defensive attitude suggests we were not the first to bring up the subject. One of us is a heritage conservation architect with many years experience working on quite a number of international projects for UNESCO. Electricity, heating, hot water, and modern communications are some of the issues that must be addressed in all historic structures, whether it's for a museum or a proposed conversion for offices or a hotel--these days, it is very rare that technology cannot achieve all these necessities. Nowadays, guests expect to be able to have communications available anywhere, any time. We discovered the possible real reason for the lack in this hotel (which is part of a larger group of properties) is that the owner, who is over 80 yrs old, is trying to sell the property, and therefore probably does not want to spend the not-inconsiderable amt. of money installing modems in ea. room, or any other upgrading. The bathroom had no shower, only a hand-held hose with no wall hook, also no shower curtain or screen, so the whole tiny bathroom (only curtained off from the bed) was soaked after a bath/shower. Bath was a huge triangular tub, like an '80s era spa bath-- but without those fixtures--& took up so much space it was very difficult to squeeze past it to stand at the sink.

The location of the hotel, in the former fortress/citadelle, is fantastic, right on the cliff-top overlooking the sea and the town below, giving panoramic views as far as the eye can see. You very aware of staying in an historic building, many centuries old. The garden setting is lovely.

One can tell that the building has at some point been restaured and designed at great cost-but that is a while ago. Some things are tired ( baths, taps, carpeting ) looking and to not have a tv and working wifi in your room at these rates is pretty unacceptable in this day&age. A shame, really as it would otherwise be superb..

Great building and fantastic views. Very good breakfast, super friendly staff, good beds.

Walking back in the dark from town there were no lights and it was very difficult to see the way. We had asked before going out and were told there would be lightning. It was scary and dangerous.

    The view and sunrise spectacular.

Staff always seemed too busy & stressed to help I was not informed to book the shuttle off the boat so we ended wondering aimlessly around the island with baby, pushchair & luggage... On departure, luggage was supposed to dropped off on harbour 30mins before boat departure only just made it with 3mins to spare... very stressful Restaurant was fully booked... a simple email before arrival to inform about their 1/2 board offer (breakfast + dinner 49€) + inform about about the shuttle service would have been nice... and saved a lot of stress in what was supposed to be a relaxing holiday

Lovely historic building very nicely done up Nice big room and corner bath Good baby bed provided with a baby fleece blanket Complementary access to citadelle tours

    Nothing

The Citadelle Vauban has to be in the top five hotels we have ever stayed in. It was magnificent. The location, overlooking harbour, town and sea was superb; the service impeccable; the room large, well-proportioned and very comfortable, the view spectacular; the indoor swimming pool super and the surroundings in the citadel itself historic and fascinating. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

The Internet connection is only at lobby. But we used a travel router.

A unique place. A fascinating castle. Everything around him breathes old times. Everywhere the spirit of the Middle Ages. Wild nature. Elegant view from the window to the ocean. Comfortable bed. The bathroom in the room is chic. Big room. There are swimming pools. But, all the time you, of course, will spend on a trip around the island.

There was charm in that some of the fittings were worn but they need to be maintained i.e. Light Switches and basin tap. However we would hate to see them replaced with modern fittings.

The decor was imaginative and exciting. Although the window was small as we were on the third floor the view was stupendous. Dinner in the evening was the best of the holiday
