“The lodge was extremely comfortable with large sofas looking out towards woods, which I read supported a red squirrel colony: and yes, I did see red squirrels every day! The kitchen was very well equipped and in general, there seemed to be everything you could possibly need for cooking, cleaning and comfort. The hosts left a welcome basket which was quickly consumed! The lounge has a huge television - a complete novelty for us and fun to watch films on. Beds were comfortable, the shower powerful and the whole place was very warm.
If you haven't visited this area before, it is magical: the sea estuary at Kippford and Rockliffe drains away at low tide, enabling you to walk over to an island in the middle; when the tide is in, so are the estuary birds - lots of oystercatchers and curlews when I was there. The forests of Mabie and Dalbeattie are wonderful not only for mountain biking but also for walking. And don't forget to visit Fort Arthur, at Beeswing, a fantastic farm shop and cafe; and the InHouse chocolatier in Castle Douglas!”
