How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

Lovely spacious cottage, very comfortable and clean. Has everything you need. Great location. Parking pass was an absolute plus.

Shower a little on the small side and water pressure not great.
Cottage was beautiful. Ideal location and close to all local amenities. Had everything we needed for our stay. Personalised card wishing us a great stay was a lovely personal touch.

Maybe in the summer some outside space but then there are lots of places to go and sit outside.
Great location away from the front on a quiet little alley. Everything was lovely and clean and well presented. The cottage totally met our needs we lacked for nothing. Lovely and warm on a very chilly visit.

Great location, close to everything, quiet, enough space, very clean. We loved the fireplace. Great customer service :) It would be great to add some basic tea bags in the kitchen. We came very late and the stores were closed. Other than that the place has all you need.

Spacious, extremely clean (looked like it had been recently decorated) and well equipped with everything we needed. Parking was by permit which was easy to do as clear instructions had been given. We would definitely stay again.

NOTHING!
Charlotte, the host was on hand and answered the couple of queries that we had straight away. The cottage was immaculate and decorated to a very high standard. It was within walking distance to all of the local amenities - the pub on the corner had great live entertainment on both of the evenings of our stay for example - great local shops, restaurants etc. We will definitely be visiting again!!!!

Nothing. Everything was to our needs and more.
The location was perfect. Close to the West Cliff in one direction and down to the front/harbour/town in a short walk in the other. Shops close to the cottage inc Bothams bakery, cafes, art and craft shops. The cottage was bright, fresh, and spacious. 100% for cleanliness, washing machine, iron, hairdryer, bath, and separate shower. Perfect for our needs.

Kitchen floor exceptionally slippery, think it had just been cleaned, when dried was still slippery(had to go careful as had a disabled member of the party). Would have been nice to have had a brush and dustpan just to keep it tidy during the stay

The one small criticism was the lack of a basic welcome pack. If arriving at the property late in the day it would just be the icing on the cake to be able to have a cup of tea or coffee to hand….to have with the lovely biscuits that were provided!
The cottage was in a fantastic location and spotlessly clean. Communication was excellent and very informative. We wouldn’t hesitate in recommending or staying again.

The double bed was tight near the door and the corner edge of the bed was sharp, ouch!
Very nice cottage, close to the centre of Whitby. Clean and tidy, well presented.

The shower temperature went from cold to scolding hot.
Great location and quiet. Lovely decor throughout with good kitchen facilities. Loved the welcome card and biscuits..We managed to park close by and having the permit took away some stress and we walked everywhere. A gem and we'll be recommending it for sure.

We have absolutely nothing negative to say about Clarence Cottage
I couldn’t rate this property any more highly. We spent the most lovely weekend here and didn’t want to leave. The location is ideal and you are tucked away down a lovely quiet cobbled street. The whole house is immaculate and has everything you could possibly need. This is a total home from home and we can’t wait to return
