A good stay - which should have been exceptional - let down by penny-pinching.

The deleted AA 4* sign told a story. It was difficult to find reception as there was no external sign and it was somewhat hidden when inside - giving a slightly unwelcoming feel. When found, the "preferred" check-in method was a kiosk (as reception isn't permanently staffed) which issued the room card and printed out a totally useless map of how to find the room. A penny-pinching gimmick like this sends the ambience of the hotel plummeting like a lead balloon and it didn't work at all for check-out. Further penny-pinching was evident with paper labels stuck over the brass signs and the cheapest contactor had clearly been engaged to freshen the paint with a coat of magnolia as the amount of over-paint on the skirting boards and door surrounds was unforgivable. The penny-pinching continued to our (not cheap) dining experience with frozen fries served with an expensive steak meal instead of proper chips, bought-in frozen desserts and just the one rasher of bacon for the "full" breakfast... :/ . The orange juice was of very poor quality and some coffees were an extra charge. While the en suite was of a high standard, the original bath had been replaced with an over-sized shower in the current fashion - no use to an old git like me arriving with aching bones and longing for a good soak. The fitting contractor had messed up with the shower gel holder as it was fitted upside down. Of most concern was that the mixer tap on the basin had been fitted so "H" produced cold water and "C" produced water *so hot it was surely dangerous*. A child could be badly hurt by this. While staff were friendly, some waiting staff in the evening seemed to be ill-trained and inexperienced.

This was a pleasant stay at a comfortable hotel. The location was exceptional - immediately by Neptune's Staircase and with beautiful views of Ben Nevis from both our room and the dining room with a steam train just 200 yards away; this is a "go to" location. Our room was generously proportioned and well equipped (although the slightly dated furniture and worn carpet gave the ambience of somewhat faded grandeur) - and the en suite had clearly recently been refurbished to a high standard. Cleanliness was exemplary and all staff were friendly and helpful. The dining room had a very pleasant ambiance and breakfast was comprehensive.

Small rooms, very noisy from adjacent rooms and hallway. At £135 room only overpriced.

Restaurant kitchen closes at 5pm, a little far from town. Also could not open wondow for some air.

The location next to Neptune's step is nice with ample of parking especially if you have a car.

The room was one of the tiniest I've ever seen & you can see that it is very old. The bed was even tinier, we had to make sure we don't fall off & we are not on the heavier side.

The bathroom was clean and very spacious. The food was really good, we had fish & chips & a chicken curry for dinner + very good breakfast in the morning.

The hotel decor was a little out-dated.

Good location right by the Caledonian canal and Neptune's steps, with an on-site car park, great view of Ben Nevis, without exception every member of staff was very welcoming and courteous. Rooms were clean and had all the usual amenities and it was a close walk to the nearby 'Lochy' pub which had a great atmosphere and excellent food. There was a good breakfast and check out was very quick and simple.

There was much to like, the only thing that could be made better would be advertising the additional cost for pets. The hotel charges an additional £15 per night.

The superior rooms are clean and modern. Ours had a lovely view of the keys. The restaurant was good value for the money, provides good sized portions and is popular with tourists. The bar has lots of character and prices are fair.

The staff at reception and breakfast lounge was very short with us giving quick instructions. Not telling us where breakfast is served on arrival. The room had no TV remote, and the shower had the worst water pressure ever. You would have been probably better off with a bucket water. Also, the sink had no hot water?! The insulation of the bathroom was lacking severely.

The breakfast was really good and the beds were comfortable. They had a good variety of teas to choose from.
