An excellent one night stay, spoiled by limited and basic breakfast. Lovely views.

Breakfast was very basic - only one type of egg (fried), only tinned chopped tomatoes (not even plum tomatoes), no mushrooms. Toast choice was either white or mixed (no wholewheat bread). One choice of juice and no fresh fruit salad. Marmalade was in pouches and was almost like syrup. Very disappointing.

Lovely room (no. 21) with excellent views over Dovedale. Friendly staff and very good dinner (celebrating an anniversary).

Only 2 tea bags in the room and we asked for a couple more please, which were supplied with some sugar. The following day, we purchased our own tea bags and left them alongside the kettle (along with some sugar given to us from a cafe we visited in Ashbourne). However, on arrival back in our room on our last evening, the tea bags and sugar had all been REMOVED! This was not impressive at all. Also, as we left after breakfast the following morning, we handed in the key and confirmed nothing else to pay, and we're not even asked if we had enjoyed our stay. We only saw a handful of staff. One of which was someone who I believed to be the chef, bringing lunches to table, who wore the dirtiest tea towel I'd ever seen hanging from the waist of his apron.

Room was very spacious and clean. Very comfy, large bed. Kettle, hairdryer, TV - good amenities in the room.

Food disappointing: restaurant food was poor, overpriced for what it was, and service on the day we ate there was chaotic. (Not helped by a drunken guest kicking off, which was not the hotel’s fault). Breakfast was out of the 1960s: tinned grapefruit and stewed prunes were the main fruit on offer, and the food, like fried eggs, prepared in batches which soon went cold.

Location is great for walkers. Room was comfortable and quiet if a little old-fashioned. The bar area could also do with a refurb. The main restaurant is closed we had to eat in the bar.

All guest phones were inoperable. No decent WiFi in room and TV speaker was crackly. Manager tried to help and offered us another room but we declined as only 1 day left. Breakfast was disappointing as only fruit option was prunes and grapefruit, the latter was not advised due to medication. Fried eggs over done. Staff tried to help but it seemed they hadn’t got any power to do anything about it. Perhaps price should be raised so the quality of the past can be restored.

Great location and good view from room. Bar food was excellent.

Far too feeble a choice of continental style breakfast. Cereals and ultra-processed bread. No fresh fruit, croissants or eg cheeses. Too much reliance on the cooked breakfast, which was not available on two occasions during our stay. This was despite the manager's reassurance it wouldn't happen again after the first time. The hotel grounds are very neglected. Hotel guests can not add things to the room tab - everything has to be paid for as ordered. This led to us choosing elsewhere to eat and drink in the evenings.

Superb location for walking in Derbyshire Dales. The room was spacious and very clean . Lovely view from room. Unlimited hot water. The bathroom was large. Cooked breakfast was good quality when available. Reception and other frontline staff were polite and cheerful often against the odds.

    - basic customer service, no flexibility in regards to check-in time or breakfast (literally we were made to the nearest minute), also breakfast starts 8:30am which felt a bit too late. - no fridge in the room - bedding is on the budget side, with unbreathable polyester duvet - breakfast was very basic - bathroom was a bit outdated, though underfloor heating was a good touch - nothing to do with the hotel, but the road is very stressful (narrow, single lane with a lot of traffic both ways coming to and from Stepping Stones)

    - Location! Breath-taking view, easy access to Stepping Stones - ample car parking - great views from the room

One rude senior staff member, food poor (no chef) and lack of staff to attend residents needs. Numerous people were turned away as there was no sunday lunch and none of the cream teas they once offered

Beautiful location and comfortable clean room and the staff (what there were of them) were great except for one very rude senior manager of asian persausion. Ideally placed for hiking the Dovedale area.

The Food we had for an Evening meal was not that great , always Prawn Cocktail that was Spicy And you couldn't taste the prawns. T he Steak and Ale pie , left a lot to be desired. Hardly any Steak , what there was were diced pieces, which were very small. Didn't bother with a sweet ,based on what the first two courses were like . My wife's Lasagne was dry and overcooked .

The Breakfast was very good ,plenty of choice .The Location is excellent, especially for walks , and as a lovely base for the Peak District. Our Bedroom 15 , was a King Room , and it was truly lovely .The grounds of the Hotel are in need of some serious attention ,as is some of the outside seating .

The hotel is located in a very beautiful area with a lovely view. It has large windows, a comfortable bed, good lighting, a clean bathroom, and a peaceful atmosphere with spacious surroundings.

The hotel is located in a very beautiful area with a lovely view. It has large windows, a comfortable bed, good lighting, a clean bathroom, and a peaceful atmosphere with spacious surroundings. However, there are a few areas that need improvement: The plates during breakfast were not clean enough. The kettle in the room was not working properly and posed a safety risk, as it did not turn off even when there was no water inside. The floor made noise when walking over it. Despite these issues, we enjoyed our stay overall. The hotel met our expectations, although the price was slightly high.

Staff are all going up a steep learning curve after change of owners. Kitchen issues meant a very long wait for only adequate dinner. Breakfast doesn't start till 8:30am and was not great e.g. no mushrooms, ultraprocessed cereals only, no fruit, ultraprocessed bread etc. A bit tatty outside - needs some TLC.

Great views. Iconic old hotel. Quiet spot close by superb walks.

The kitchen was closed , I rang the hotel to book a table in the restaurant, they're ment to do fine dining , to be told to ring back in an hour , I rang back 2 hrs later to still be told they didn't know if there was any room , I was told that they would ring me back , did they ?? No they didn't, I eventually turned up to check in and noticed information to say the kitchen was closed , funnily enough the kitchen was open for breakfast the next morning, I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone as the communications from staff is unreliable and an honest answer to the kitchen would of been a better policy .I believe they only open the fine dining if enough people book the restaurant which should be clear when booking , Obviously this is my opinion.

    Location is great .

The staff weren’t exactly bad but it’s like not one of them had ever worked in a hotel before. I understand the place has recently changed hands so that might be it. Didn’t seem to be enough of them to keep things running smoothly. Breakfast was hilarious - not served until 08:30, which is quite late especially if you’re off out walking - there was very little choice, most of the food was gone by quarter past 9 and no sign of any eggs until gone 9. The food itself was good quality and was eventually replenished but people were openly complaining about the poor service in the breakfast room. The water pressure in the rooms was nonexistent and the water lukewarm at best. Glasses and rubbish left in the outside seating area for hours at a time.

The public areas of the hotel are quite plush but the rooms are in need of a bit of TLC. That said, ours was very comfortable and clean with a stunning view, so all good. Bar staff very attentive and some nice local ales on offer. The location is perfect for walkers and the grounds nicely kept.
