We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.

GermanyBatu Mandi is an amazing and quiet place. It feels like a home, the family is very kind. They helped me to learn some Indonesian. The food was delicious, always fresh and beautifully decorated. Many fruits and herbs from their lovely garden. Thank you so much Jamila, Gina and Dui. I enjoyed the jungle tour with Leo. He is a great guide. It's difficult to leave this wonderful place.

CanadaThis hostel is FAR from the rest of town, which honestly came as a surprise to me. It looks close on Google Maps, but it is not close.
The staff was very nice. When a frog got into my room, they dealt with it promptly. The eating area has great views.

Germany-
We cannot recommend this accommodation enough!!! Wisma Batu Mandi really is a small paradise with a beautiful, lovingly landscaped garden with many fruit trees, a great lounge area and 3 dogs as well as cats. The accommodation is located in the forest right by the river, so you can hear the amazing sounds of animals and the water at night. The village and small supermarkets are accessable within easy walking distance. The restaurant offers very delicious, both indonesian and western food and drinks. We were welcomed so warmly and friendly from the beginning, especially by Supri, Holanda and Putra. Supri organized a transport from Medan to Bukit Lawang and also drove us to the nearest ATM. Unfortunately we got very sick during our stay, but everyone took care of us touchingly, brought medicine and food and offered a transport to the nearest doctor. Thanks to Supri we were also able to flexibly postpone the jungle tour and extend our stay. It was definitely our favourite stay on our entire trip so far and we really felt like part of the family, thank you so much!! Greetings, Tabea & Theresa

We loved the 2-day/night stay with Supri, Jamila, Gina, Duwi and Putra. Beautiful garden and incredible food! The bungalows are basic. The 2 day trekking was amazing and we were very well guided by Supri, Mr Jo, Mardan and Nikki. Best jungle pineapple fish sweet and sour ever!

ItalyToilets could be a little bit more “organised”
Batu mandi was a very special place. Run by kind and sweet people who are local people. I think we as tourist need to be aware and when visiting a place like bukit lawang we need to remember we are visiting their land and their jungle! It’s important to help local people, to stay in their homestay or guesthouses, to eat in their restaurants. Also there are many foreign company who organise tour in the jungle but we should prefer organisation made and run by locals, so it’s important to study a little bit before booking a tour. Please everybody just pay attention on where your money goes! A special word to Putra, nice boy who helped me to explore the batcave and discovers rivers. I will definitely come back here next time.

AustraliaThere is nothing I didn’t like
I definitely reccomend booking your stay at Wisma! Can’t reccomend it enough. The family are lovely and so helpful! The food is delicious and very cheap! They really make you feel at home here. Hospitality was 10/10! You can also book your trek with them which I really reccomend. Supri, the guide, is soooo helpful and was the best! He was able to customise the trek to our needs and went out of his way to make us happy! We went on the trek with him and Rudy and they were both amzing! We saw so many orangutans and stayed in huts overnight. The food along the way was also incredible and so fresh! We loved it! Thanks to Supri and Rudy we had the best time. They are super easy going and relaxed while still always ensuring that everything runs smoothly and we are safe and happy. 10000/10! It’s also much better to book the trek with local companies like Wisma to help the jungle and Bukit Lawang. Larger companies like “Sumatra Orangutan Explore” are owned by larger overseas companies and they don’t respect the local people and jungle. So it’s much better to book with a local business. This also means that you will have a more personalised and friendly experience. The accomodation is so beautiful! It’s a close walking distance to anything you need, but far enough away from the hustle and bustle. It’s very peaceful and calm, it sits right on the river so you can easily pop down for a swim whenever you want. They have a beautiful garden where they grow their own fruit. The juices and smoothies are so greasy and delicious. The food was also the best we had in Bukit Lawang. I could stay forever and ever! Really can’t reccomend this place enough we had an amazing time and can’t wait to go back!

United KingdomNothing!
We had such an amazing time here. The grounds were beautiful and the room was simple and basic but clean (you cannot complain for the price) the food was some of the best that we have had in Indonesia and our trip around Asia for the past 6 months. There are 3 cute cats too and a dog who just had some little puppies! The best part though was our jungle trekking with Supri and Rudi. They were such brilliant guides and they really made the experience amazing for us. They are such kind people and we felt so comfortable in the jungle with them. Both their English is amazing - especially as Supri lived in the UK for many years. Supri even helped us buy mosquito spray and helped me when my shoes broke 😆 and they gave us a lift to buy our bus tickets and drove us to our new accommodation. The food they gave us at the trek was so tasty too! A really important part of this trek for us was making sure our guides were ethical and respectful of the animals and jungle and you can really tell that these guys care a lot about their environment and the animals. They didn’t give any of the animals fruit and they were really careful in taking all rubbish etc away with them. They spoke so highly of their community that they grew up in and the plans they have for the future sustainability of the forest. They helped us get so (safely) close to so many orangutans 🦧 and even a huge male! Please don’t hesitate at all and book a tour with these guys! Thank you Supri and Rudi! We hope to see you again! ❤️

The location next to the nature park and along the river is vëry very nice. Beautiful garden. The food in the guesthouse is truly excellent and the staff very friendly and hospitable. We booked the jungle tour through Supri the manager. Supri is a certified guide and together with Chandra, also a certified guide, we made a great jungle hike and spotted the orang oetans. We have always received a lot of information from them. Even with transport. We can definitely recommend this guesthouse and the jungle hike with Supri and Chandra.

We also had made a 2days tour to see the animals in the jungle. We never have seen such a animal not far from us.But the guide and helper did todos what was possible. Food and a lot of things for eating. Sleep places, toilet etc. Everything was in the jungle. So next time, we go again . Frits and Manuel, Portugal.

New ZealandEverything is great.
A beautiful tranquil location with gorgeous gardens and a private river to bathe in. All just a 10 min walk from the center. The food is lovely and the staff go out of their way to make you feel welcome. The owner spends a lot of his time getting to know the guests and goes out of his way to keep everybody happy and provides a great service -nothing is too much to ask. He also tailors his treks to suit peoples individual needs and is very respectful of the environment. He has great knowledge about the jungle and whats happening in the area.I wish we could have spent more time here.

IrelandBeautiful location, great food and fantastic staff. We loved our stay here! Our host Josef organised our whole trekking experience and also organised our transport to and from the bus station. We did 3 days trekking with our brilliant guides Anwar and Darwan. Their expertise was second to none, it was such a pleasure to share this experience with such knowledgeable and friendly guides, we loved every minute. The only downfall was that we couldn't figure out any of Josef's card tricks 🤔 🤣

Very lovely staff, Joseph is very knowledgeable and passionate about the surrounding jungle wildlife and flora. His wife is a very kind women and a great cook (try the gado gado). Sitting on the porch in the very well maintained gardens was serene, the river is less than 100m away from any of the rooms and again very peaceful stretch of the river. The accomodation is a 5min walk to the National Park and 10mins into town so everything is accessible whilst you're tucked away in a little slice of paradise. We stayed in the standard double room and you get what you pay for, but a very comfortable bed and bliss sleeping to the sound of the river. Would definitely come back here again!

IndiaNothing really. Maybe the pillow was a bit hard, that's all.
Everything! My share taxi was late but Josef still picked me up from town. Quite an adventurous trip up the jungle tracks, only the scooter's headlight illuminating the sodden path, the narrow suspension bridge and the stones and roots he had to navigate. Then Jamila cooked the most exquisite Indonesian meals for me during my stay. The main house, my room with its porch, and the garden have this wonderful tropical, colonial atmosphere even though the guesthouse is owned and run by Batak people. And on my last morning, Josef organised a jungle trek for me on very short notice. If I hadn't already booked another guesthouse afterwards, I would just have stayed on and on. I really didn't want to leave!
