How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive info (e.g. emails, phone numbers, credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (i.e. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
Guidelines and Standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

Verified reviewKariappa House exceeded my expectations and I am certainly coming back for a longer stay. The warmth, hospitality, attention to detail and specially the swimming pool and the garden were exceptional. I was a little wary of the location but that was also not a problem at all because Kariappa House is very close to the French quarter (which can get very crowded) and although it is located in the middle of a gentrified fishing village, it has a lot of local charm as one approaches the house. Once inside, it’s a different world. My Room (T2) was perfect for a single person and had a lot of old world charm. It has been restored beautifully and is maintained very well. The staff were very helpful and it felt like home. They also help organise curated local experiences and the free shuttle to the French Quarter is very useful. This place is an authentic and charming guesthouse in Pondicherry which one should not miss.
There was absolutely nothing to dislike. Everything was perfect.
Thank you so much for such a nice review. We are very happy that you enjoyed your stay with us. It was a pleasure hosting you, and we look forward to having you back again soon.

Verified reviewSwimming pool, beautiful garden, available bicycles, and friendly staff.
The air conditioner in my room was broken. It was too noisy outside at night and early morning. Wifi was suddenly unavailable for several hours.
Dear Taro, we are truly apologetic about the inconveniences faced by you. Your stay coincided with the local 5 day temple festival, which we were also unaware of. In the future, we will try to warn our guests about the same. When your AC stopped working on the last day of your stay, we immediately moved you to a bigger room. We have 2 internet providers and it almost NEVER happens that both are down at the same time. We are sorry if you were not able to switch to the other provider when one was down. Thank you for your feedback. It always helps us improve.

Verified reviewKariappa House was one of the most memorable experiences I’ve had in all my travels. Stepping into the house felt like being transported to another time, steeped in charm, art, and beautifully preserved heritage. Every corner of the property exudes art. The architecture and interiors are thoughtfully curated, blending traditional South Indian aesthetics with subtle French influences. The common areas were my absolute favourite calm, inviting, and perfect for unwinding. Whether it was painting or just soaking in the peaceful atmosphere, I always felt at ease. Breakfast here deserves a special mention. It was a wholesome spread of traditional South Indian dishes complemented by a daily croissant, paying homage to Pondicherry’s French roots. It was the perfect start to each day. What truly elevated my stay was the staff. Warm, attentive, and always willing to help. They went out of their way to ensure I had a comfortable and cozy stay. They even helped me discover local workshops and experiences, which added a meaningful layer to my trip. The lush garden, with birds chirping in the background, offered a tranquil setting that made it hard to leave.

Verified reviewKariappa House is a wonderful escape from the heat and dust of Pondy. The garden is blissful and the house full of character, but also spacious and comfortable. Everyone was very helpful and pleasant. It's about 15 minutes to walk into town or staff will hire a tuk-tuk. Pool is great but remember to book. If you're going to Pondy I really recommend Kariappa.
Nothing I didn't like. I suppose breakfast was a bit limited.

Verified reviewKariappa House is a rare gem, neither a hotel nor a homestay but a unique and authentic retreat in the heart of Vaithikuppam. Tucked away from the bustling streets of White Town, this historical haven offers a peaceful and immersive experience in one of Puducherry’s most charming neighbourhoods. From the moment we stepped through the gates into the walled garden, we felt transported to an oasis of tranquility. The lush gardens, serene atmosphere, and beautifully preserved architecture set the tone for a stay that was both relaxing and enriching. Our accommodation was exceptional—comfortable bedding, ample hot water, air conditioning, and a ceiling fan for added comfort. The highlight, however, was the stunning veranda overlooking the lush gardens and the inviting lap pool, a perfect spot to unwind. Breakfast each morning was a delightful mix of continental and Indian flavours, and every meal we had at Kariappa House was a treat. Lunch was particularly memorable—delicious, well-prepared, and bursting with flavour. The service was impeccable, with Vanaja and her team going above and beyond to make every meal special. Mukesh, the manager, was an absolute star—always present, always smiling, and ever ready to assist. His warmth and hospitality made our stay truly exceptional. Ramji, Kalai, and the entire team worked tirelessly to ensure we felt welcome and at home. Their dedication and attention to detail made all the difference. Getting into town was easy, whether by the shuttle Tuk Tuk or a quick ride in a local Tuk Tuk. We often opted to walk the scenic route back along the coastline through the fishing village—a beautiful way to experience the area’s charm. But beware of the dangerous temperatures and sunshine. We always opted for sunrise and after sunset. Practicalities like reliable WiFi, uninterrupted electricity, and excellent water pressure were never an issue, making our extended stay all the more comfortable.

Verified reviewIt’s lovely-beautiful, thoughtful room. Smelled great too. Pool was peaceful and pretty. Courtyard was well kept and gracious. Felt very safe for my first solo trip within India. As all reviews state-the staff is incredible: kind, helpful, sweet. It’s Walkable, close to seaside. Met some really great fellow travelers.
North Americans are used to an obscene amount of water gushing from pipes-so India takes a little getting used to, turning on a geyser for a bit before you can jump in at these more boutique stays. Still- the simplicity of it, the feeling that you really can get by with much needed quick cooling showers felt kind of good.

Thank you so much for your review. We provide Rubber flip flops which are washed and sanitized after each use. We are still searching for a footwear which is non disposable and can take repeated washes and is super soft as well. The best sustainable option would be if guests brought their own.

Verified reviewThis guest house is in a tranquil, green oasis in busy and vibrant Puducherry. We were bowled over by how lovely it was. It's very comfortable, tastefully furnished and the staff were exceptional. Mukesh, the Manager, ensured all our needs were fulfilled and couldn't have been more helpful. All the staff seemed to be genuinely pleased to assist the guests, from the delightful ladies who prepared our delicious breakfasts to the people who tended the gardens. Fantastic all round and cannot recommend highly enough. The best place by far that we stayed in during our 3 week trip to India!
Would have liked some chairs or loungers by the pool to relax on after a swim.
Thank you for your lovely review and words of appreciation. Have noted your suggestion about the loungers and will try and fit them in. it was a pleasure to have you stay with us.
