How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive info (e.g. emails, phone numbers, credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (i.e. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
Guidelines and Standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

Verified reviewThe Exeter Hotel is in an excellent location for getting to the harbour and a very short walk from downtown Reykjavik. Our room was very comfortable and spotlessly clean as were all communal areas. The staff were very polite and courteous and very helpful. Breakfast in Le Kock was very tasty and we also enjoyed dinner there.
The room was a little small on floor space but adequate.

Verified reviewClean, large rooms, very good location by the harbor. Had a bakery right downstairs that had super yummy bagels!
Our room had a window that had no curtains or shades. People could look in from outside!
Thank you for sharing your feedback! We’re so glad you enjoyed our spacious rooms, central harbor location, and the delicious bagels from the bakery downstairs. Regarding your comment about the window, all rooms do have curtains, but they are designed to blend in with the wall décor, which might make them less noticeable at first. We’ll be sure to keep your feedback in mind, as guest comfort and privacy are very important to us. We hope to welcome you back to Exeter Hotel for another stay in Reykjavik. Exeter Team

Thank you for your kind words! We’re delighted to hear that our team, and especially Anamaria at reception, made such a great impression. She wanted to add: “Foi um prazer!” While our rooms don’t have air conditioning, we’re always happy to provide a fan upon request to make your stay more comfortable. Verified reviewThe hotel is perfectly situated for easy access to the city centre and the harbour (which was important as I was boarding a cruise after my stay). Really ideal for people joining any of the great cruises that set sail from Reykjavik. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful - they also have a great sense of humour! I like it when staff let their personalities shine! The room was compact but very comfortable and had everything I could possibly need. And the real highlight was the sauna! That is a fabulous facility - modern, stylish, cool Nordic lo-fi beats playing while you relax and fresh water infused with fresh citrus fruits to rehydrate between sauna sessions.
The only thing I would have liked would have been to have the ability to open the window or have some aircon. It wasn't an overly warm night though, so it was fine!
Thank you so much for your wonderful review! We’re thrilled that our location was ideal for your cruise plans and that you enjoyed the comfort of your room, the friendliness of our team, and, of course, the sauna experience. It’s lovely to hear you appreciated those little touches that make it special. Regarding your note on ventilation, thank you for mentioning this. While our rooms don’t have air conditioning, we’re always happy to provide a fan on request to ensure extra comfort. Verified reviewThe Exeter hotel is in a great location, walking distance of everything we wanted to see in Reykjavik. On arrival, and throughout our stay, the front desk staff were really friendly and helpful (even helping me with my first use of one of Iceland's car parking Apps that was needed to pay for parking on the street behind the hotel. The rooms are very smart and comfortable. We didn't have dinner in the hotel but had breakfast from the in hotel bakery shop which was excellent and reasonably priced (by Iceland standards).
Staying in summer there is a problem (that is common in Iceland but more of a problem in the middle of a city) if you want to cool the room the only way to do this is to open the window which opened on to the busy street in front of the hotel which is quite noisy. Also, our room was directly above the bar which was also noisy
Dear Andrew, Thank you for your thoughtful review! It’s wonderful to hear that our team made a warm impression and that you enjoyed starting the day with fresh options from our bakery. We’re always grateful when guests share where we can improve, and your comments about comfort and atmosphere will be shared with our management team. The Exeter Team

Lighting in lobby and rooms very low. Not good for reading or old eyes.
Dear Steele, Thank you for your feedback! We’re glad you enjoyed the location and appreciate you pointing out the lighting. Our design is purposefully kept atmospheric and cozy, though we fully understand it may feel too dim at times, especially for reading. We’ll make sure to share your comments with our team. Verified reviewIt serve our purposes. We only stay there for sleeping as we had days with activities. They gave us two keys, the room is small which is standard. Very modern, loft industrial. The wifi worked perfectly. Many people commented on the air conditioner in Iceland hotels. Yes no air conditioner but this practice is usual in very cold places. We went in July. and we did not feel hot in the room. You can open one of the windows from the balcony. Our room overlooked other houses and a small ally but rarely heard noises. The “balcony” was a square cube glass-interesting concept. All main attractions are walkable from the hotel. Downstairs there is a bagel shop that always was full (Im not a breakfast person) and one of the burger restaurant Le Kock is there. Keep in mind that Iceland restaurants close early, around 9pm kitchens close. There are plenty of plugs for your devices although we carry a multi modal one for traveling. For parking, there were plenty of street parking 7min walk or so on the streets close to the hotel. The hotel is in a main street close to the harbor. Remember to pay (we pay through the machines in the street).
There was nothing. We were out early and come back late.
Thank you for sharing such a thoughtful review of your stay! We’re glad to hear the hotel served your needs well and that you enjoyed the central location, modern design, reliable Wi-Fi, and nearby food options. It’s also wonderful to know the room stayed comfortable for you during July. We truly appreciate your detailed feedback about parking, facilities, and the surrounding area. It will be very helpful for future travelers. We hope to welcome you back to Exeter Hotel for another visit to Reykjavik! Exeter Team

Verified reviewGreat location near old port. Nice “industrial” design. Amazing bagels in lobby. Nice staff.
Parking difficult close by, although they have on site parking in the garage (35 EUR night).
Thank you for your kind review! We’re glad you enjoyed our design, location, and bakery treats, and that our team made a good impression. Parking can indeed be a challenge in downtown Reykjavik, but we’re happy to offer on-site garage spaces and always strive to guide our guests to the most convenient and affordable options nearby. Verified reviewThe location and eateries on site
Not a mobility challenged place to stay. The difficulty of gaining access to room with door system. Poor lighting. Most of all false advertising and photos + description of rooms. No ventilation in room in bathroom or room m itself.
Thank you for your feedback, Lena Grace. We are very sorry for the inconvenience caused by the door access issue during your stay. This was an unexpected technical problem that required external assistance, and we truly appreciate your patience while it was being resolved. We hope that, despite this incident, you felt well taken care of by our team. We also take note of your comments regarding lighting and ventilation. Our industrial design with concrete walls can make rooms appear darker, especially in Iceland’s weather, but your feedback is valuable and will be shared with our management team for future improvements.
