    Unique but lacked finishing touches

A beautiful room to look at - colours, furnishings, fab bath and shower - but uncomfortable. Bed was okay with nice linen but very low and just a little on the hard side (though realise this is very subjective). The furniture, situated by the rather small window with a view to the Matera, was attractive but hard and uncomfortable while the more comfortable sofa - not entirely comfy either - was in the entrance to the room which seemed rather strange. The stairs leading to the bedroom and window area needed to be carefully negotiated and definitely not for everyone. And the door to our room - 1004 - was directly opposite the reception with people in one corner of the breakfast area able to glance up into the bedroom area. Staff were very helpful but overall we felt we were no more than part of the tourist churn. Finally, finishing touches - i.e the cheapest and flimsiest of plastic cups for wine, one teabag no coffee - were lacking and the breakfast was fairly dismal quality though coffee was good. Expect much more for price paid.

Immaculately clean, beautiful space, excellent bath and rain shower, spacious, large bed, cave dwelling a unique experience and staff helpful when approached.

Great location in the Sassi. Quite. Loved the decoration. Very good breakfast. Lovely staff. Historical building (ancient church) which transformed our stay into a magnificent experience.

Frankly, I really liked it and I think it is part of the charm but for some it will be inconvenient: my room was on a split level so to get to the bed you had to climb up via narrow winding staircase. If you are a big/broad person (more than a couple sizes above average), I imagine you may get stuck there when trying to run downstairs to the bathroom! :-)

Great location, really nice unique hotel in a converted church keeping the old times charm but with modern facilities. Delicious and varied breakfast. I really really liked this hotel - you can feel as a part of Matera’s life!

    Nothing

My stay was originally in the small single room near entrance but they offered me the appartment round the back for a bit more. Once i saw it, i took the upgrade. Yes it was my most expensive stay per night in Italy (in 2 months) but worth it. Bed was comfortable, heaps of windows all looking out to I Sassi and looking right at the Cathedral. Fantastic shower, everything clean, mini fridge. And a short walk down to the reception for breakfast, which had a variety that would suit most tastes. They make fresh coffee for you. Highly recommend. The appartment is actually easier to walk to Piazza Giovanni Battista and a few meters from main Piazza Veneto. Forgot to mention the absolute pinnacle - all windows had fly/mosquito netting which means you can leave windows open with being bitten overnight!!

No much, maybe a better choice at breakfast but that's me being picky!

We stayed here for 2 nights finding our way here on our first night in the labyrinth of the streets that is Matera Sassi in the dark! We had booked room 1008, the small classic double which has the bedroom up a flight of stairs through a trap hatch! They offered us the option to upgrade to a room with a view, for a small fee, but as we were only here for a couple of nights & we weren’t planning on being in our room too much we didn’t bother. The accommodation set in a former cathedral was quirky but well-furnished with a lovely bathroom & the bed was very comfortable - we did remember to close the hatch at night to stop us falling through should we get up in the dark! Breakfast was served in the main reception area & there was a reasonably good selection on offer. All the staff were very friendly & accommodating. A great base to explore the wonderful city of Matera.

Because of the nature of staying in a cave, there can be some humidity and a damp smell at times. The novelty of staying in such a unique place makes up for it, but something to keep in mind. We had the two story classic room and it was only noticeable on the second floor so I suspect this is only perceptible in the smaller 2-story rooms such as ours.

This hotel is one of my favorites to date, at a price that simply cannot be beat. The location is perfect, with public parking for cheap not even ten minute's walk away. The breakfast was superb, with fresh pastries, yogurt, juice, cereals, and excellent coffee. We had nothing but positive interactions with the staff and recieved advice and a map on how to get around Matera as well as parking recommendations via email before arriving. The room was beautifully decorated and (obviously) one of a kind. We also peaked into one of the larger suites and it was amazing! All in all I could not recommend this hotel enough. Staying here is an experience in itself.

finding the hotel was a nightmare. took us 2 hours from parking to find the hotel.my partner stayed with the car while I located the hotel. the girl arranged for omar to come to the hotel to go back with me to the car and help direct to parking and help with luggage, when we got back to the hotel the receptionist told omar the car could not be parked where it was. omar and my partner then had to go and move the car to a secure parking area for a fee. the hotel is in the sassi area so means going down steps with luggage.

Difficult to locate, even with GPS on pedestrian mode as there is a labyrinth of 'streets' and Insufficient hotel signage on arrival. Although this IS a cave hotel, our room was stuffy and warm in February having one small window.

Excellent hotel design. Welcoming staff who provided perfect instruction on how to make the most of our brief stay from touring the old city on foot to restaurant recomendations. Bathroom in suite was complete luxury. Breakfast was good, plenty of carb options and whole pieces of fruit, containers of yogurt and very good coffee. Although there are cave accomodations available in Matera which are accessible by car, this is hotel is not. The pedestrian only feature adds to the romance and charm of the hotel.

Such an incredible surprise from the moment you arrive. The stylish, yet simple decor of the lobby and the rooms made me feel that I discovered a true gem of a hotel. The owners managed to preserve one of the ancient caves/stone buildings of Matera's fascinating history in a central location. The staff, especially Marta, could not have been more welcoming with walking and restaurant suggestions. I highly recommend this hotel. The rates are reasonable so opt for a room above the least expensive. My only regret is we didn't stay longer!

This hotel is absolutely stunning. It's all caves! Our room had two levels connected by steep stairs. In the bedroom was a trapdoor for the stairs (close it when you're upstairs to avoid falling) and a passage way to a second bed room that could only be entered by crawling. We were delighted! If that's not what you fancy they also showed us a grand apartment cave with a spa-like character. But we were happy with the small, adventurous one. The hotel is situated in the old center (you can't take your car there) and right around the corner you have a great view of old Matera. The breakfast buffett is excellent (I think I even remember slices of bread which is rare in southern Italy!) and you sit in another amazing stone hall. Staff is friendly and helpful and will provide you with a map and explain the best stops for your walking tour. Only good memories!

I appreciated the care taken in The beautiful restoration of the building, the convenient location, and the excellent assistance they provided for exploring the area.

At the beginning the air conditioning (heating) did not work properly. We asked the reception, someone came and reset the devices, but it still took almost 2 hours till it actually started proper heating. We had room 1008 (a lower priced room separated on two levels). The description on the website was correct, so we were quite content with the room, but we have a suggestion: it would be easy to make this room ,more comfortable by adding a small table and one more chair in the entrance hall on the ground floor. In this way, this level could be used as a sitting room.

Impressive atmosphere and interior decoration with a lot of attention to details. Actually, although it is in the Sassi, it is easy to find - much easier than it looks on google map directions.

Nothing apart from having to come home...

I might not be Judith Chalmers but I am a well travelled person and I know Quality when I see it. The staff simply couldn’t do enough to make our stay as special as possible. The rooms are amazing ours was 1004 I will never forget this beautiful room. Breakfast was plentiful and really nice it makes a nice change to eat fresh local produce. I would say can you afford NOT to stay in this hotel we looked in a few other during our stay and this was by far the nicest add to that how you are treated and it's easily the best..
