Not easy to find. Entry is through Urban Design Hotel which sits behind a small parking lot with little signage on one way street. If you miss it, it is not easy to come back to the same street.

This is annex to Urban Design hotel. Hotel has good rooms and lovely old stone spiral staircase. In the heart of downtown. It does not front on any traffic streets so is quiet.

The breakfast in The Urban was better than the one we had in the James Joyce. A selection of drinks and nuts or crisps would have been nice to have in the mini fridge!

The hotel is in an excellent position near the beautiful main square of Trieste. I liked the room and the bed was very comfortable. The breakfast was good. I would hope to return Thank you

A bit strange that there was no reception but there was a sign telling us to report or the hotel opposite, so that worked.

A cute little hotel in a great part of the old town but minutes away from the stylish new town centre. Many bars, cafes and restaurants nearby. Limited breakfast, but fresh fruit and freshly made coffee (proper espresso). Nice large room with beams.

In contrast to its "older brother" Urban Hotel, the facilities of James Joyce are rather disappointing: - modest room with minimum of furniture. OK in general, but some simple things (like a trash bin, for example) were missing; - bathroom setting is not great: the equipment is shabby, tiny shower box, sink is located really low etc. - some things are better to be fixed: card readers for the door opening are very load, so you hear everyone on the floor entering their rooms (=a bit disturbing during the night); TV that is blinking in the dark etc. - breakfast was rather average (which I did not expect after reading quite some positive reviews about it!). And the guy who is serving it - zero enthusiasm I would say (looked rather unhappy with it...)

+ AMAZING personal at the front reception (from Urban Hotel) - helped us with getting around, recommended and book a fantastic restaurant for a cosy dinner, provided hot water for tea in the evening absolutely free of charge, etc. Thank you so much, guys!!! + Excellent location in the heart of the city - close to everything. Nice historic building with special atmosphere + Good parking options nearby with a nice discount for the hotel guests + Fast and reliable WiFi

It is a problem that even with gps it is very difficult to find the hotel which is situated in a narrow alley. From the street you cannot see the hotel and you have to go into another hotel to get into contact with the James Joyce. Parking is a bit too far away.

My husband thought the breakfast coffee was undrinkable and let the hotel down. He says you need a new coffee machine. I drank tea. The breakfast was otherwise fine. The attached Urban Hotel is smarter and had excellent coffee, which one kind member of staff brought to my husband at one breakfast and was much appreciated.

The hotel suited us well and was in a great location but quiet.

Great location in the centre of the town. Car can be parked in the public car park nearby. (The parking house is, though, a little bit hard to find when approaching by car as the entrance signs are not well visible from the street. It's located on the Via del Teatro Romano and if you first check it out with the help of Google street view, you'll find it.)

The reception (check-in, service, payment etc.) is in the Urban Hotel Design, then you walk out their back exit, across a narrow backstreet and use a card-entry to access the James Joyce hotel. There are no common rooms or reception, just access to the bedrooms, except for breakfast room (locked except 0730-0930).

This quirky little hotel is actually linked to the modern 4* Urban Hotel Design. The breakfast is prepared and served by the Urban Hotel Design staff, and is very much 4*, with a good range of foods including homemade cheesecake . Rooms are a good size and very clean. Our room (103) was very quiet, which was a good find in a town, but windows faced a wall. 30min parking for the hotel right outside (for depositing luggage), then there is an excellent modern 24hr multistorey underground parking 250m walk with 10% discount for the hotel (€13.50/day).

Really great job of restoring this ancient building, just 3 blocks from where the ships dock, and maybe 7 or 8 from the train & bus station. The room was a bit small and could do with renovation. It took a very long time for the water to come out hot in the shower. The card system for opening the room door makes a very loud buzzing sound so it can wake you up if someone in the next room is opening the door late at night.
