Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomWe found nothing to criticise
The location of the hotel was ideal being situated in the centre of the town and within easy walking distance of the station and with many good bars and restaurants close by. The hotel had a very pleasant old world feel to it, which was lovely. Without exception, the staff were friendly and helpful. The breakfast was very good with a good selection of food.

SwitzerlandAt night, because the hotel is located in a small side street, it can get a bit (very) noisy, depending on which party passes by.
Upon arrival I was a bit disappointed to learn that this small hotel had no special connection at all to James Joyce apart from its name and the fact that while living in Trieste the Irish writer liked to hang out in the neighborhood. That said, the location is rather convenient to reach anything in center city within minutes walking. My room, although being out of reach of the elevator (which only goes to the second-highest floor), was spacious and comfortable, with some water bottles provided, as well as a generous number of towels. The breakfast was so so, ... it starts at 7:30 am, and a few times items were often missing at the beginning. Sometimes there was no fruit (apart from perhaps a mandarine), sometimes no egg (which when it did exist was usually dry and not expertly prepared). Most items were exactly the same on the five mornings, even the music ... always the one CD by the "Jazz Liberators," a certain lack of inspiration that unfortunately permeates the place, which would benefit from someone shaking things up a little, especially the dull breakfast, at hardly any extra cost.

HungaryLess noise would have been better, but in Italy you accept/forgive that :)
The hotel is very well located, in a nicely renewed historic building. The neighbourhood is very lively and full of local people, having a drink, coffee, or eating out. Sea is very close too. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Good places and real Italian vibe are in the neighbourhood.

IrelandThe location was very central and close some really cool wine bars. The breakfast had a small but nice selection of food and the coffee was freshly made to order. It was a perfect stay for a weekend trip.

IrelandThe shower tray was leaky. This is a small issue and certainly didn't negatively affect our stay. I would highly recommend this hotel.
Excellent hotel. Very helpful and friendly staff, really lovely. Great location. The room was clean and modern. Very cosy, well heated. Had a small refrigerator. The en suite has all mod cons.

United StatesOur only dislike was a shower that seemed to leak under the door while taking a shower. Shower was a bit small but that is to be expected in a historic building.
We really liked the location as it was close everything (food, shopping and most importantly seeing the historic sites in Trieste) including the port where our cruise started.

United StatesWe wanted to be in the center of the port area but also near the port. The James Joyce met both expectations 100%. We spent several days walking the interesting port city area and three minuets walking the bag drag to the ship for departure on our cruise. The hotel itself met all our needs and expectations. We did not pre-order breakfast but did eat and pay for breakfast a few mornings, which was very reasonable, plentiful and excellent. All of the staff was excellent.

United KingdomA little difficult to find as the hotel is in a narrow street but that was partly because my navigational skills aren't the best!
Friendly and welcoming staff. I only stayed one night pre cruise but I would certainly stay there again. The hotel has lots of character - and a lift! It's close to restaurants and a few minutes walk to the cruise terminal.

United StatesI loved EVERYTHING about this hotel. The location could not be better, right in a very happening part of town. The rooms were comfortable, mine even had a window in the bathroom. The staff!! OMG! What can I say, helpful, considerate, charming, multilingual, I could go on and one!! There's an elevator. It's close to the cruise terminal. Close to the beautiful square.
