Room was quite stuffy and hot, quite cramped as well. Airco didnt seem to help with this at all. The beds were uncomfortable, very hard matress. We really wanted to like the place, but these factors really hampered our experience.

Good location at lago maggiore. Nice view from rooftop terrace. Very friendly and helpfull staff, especially the night receptionist Diouf. Fast and stable wifi. Breakfast was quite good with plenty of choice.

Very surprised that our bathroom only had no shower facilities. The mixer tap on the bath was not thermostatic and varied from freezing cold to scalding hot depending on use by other people at eh same time., We had to stand in the bath and hold the mixer tap over our heads to shower. Not what I would expect for the rate we paid! Absolute minimal room clean by the maid, had to ask for shower gel even though we had clearly used what was there. Breakfast was poor, we skipped it for the last 3 days we were there.

Fabulous location, corner balcony room gave excellent views of the lake Hotel was in a good location for ferries, cable car and trips to the islands.

The bed and pillows were hard but reception did provide a mattress topper which improved the comfort factor.

Ideal location, especially convenient for boat trips on the lake and not too far from the town (approx 20 min walk). Staff very friendly and helpful. Good food in restaurant. Spotlessly clean. Lake view worth the extra cost.

Breakfast ok but didn’t have high standard of choice expected of hotel like this. EG tinned fruit, limited cheese, meat, cake selection. Had to wait before offered tea/coffee

We had balcony view of the pool and the lake. The hotel was spotless in our room and elsewhere. Free parking WiFi nice places to sit. Near ferry and cable car. Lovely flat 20 minutes walk by lake into Stresa centre. All staff helpful especially receptionist who booked us in.

Disappointed to find some of the choices on the restaurant menu utilised frozen products. Expected also to see some more traditional Italian food choices.

Fantastic staff, very friendly and helpful. Nothing was to much trouble. The location, just a few minutes walk to the lake and boats to take you to the islands. Good breakfast choices and a lovely outdoor terrace to enjoy your morning meal A short pleasant walk to Stresa town centre

Breakfast was fantastic. Great place to have dinner if you don't feel like going into town. Beautiful view from balcony. Location to the pier to take the boat to the little islands is just down the street. Easy walk along the water to the center of Stresa. Love the historic feel of the hotel interior. Great pool.

Loved the hotel! View from the rooftop deck was amazing! Hotel was just steps away from the ferry to all three Lago Maggiore Islands and a beautiful walking path on the lake shore. Breakfast in the morning had a great selection of food and the dinner at night was really good. Room was a great size, clean, quiet and comfortable. I will be staying here again if I come back to the lakes region of Italy!

Bathrobes & slippers would have been welcome additions. Dinner in the hotel seemed expensive with some rather odd dishes - tripe, omelettes with vegetables and very few typical Italian dishes that non Italians might identify with & enjoy eating the "real thing".

Hotel location was beautiful but a 15 min walk into Stresa (& back out). Not too many restaurants locally but managed to find a couple walking away from lakeshore. Staff were very friendly and helpful, hotel location wonderful for views and it was small enough to be personal. It was worth the additional cost of a deluxe room with large terrace on 4th floor for views.

Did not like the bacon and scrambled eggs! The eggs were a bit runny and the bacon not crisp enough. But that might have just been on the two mornings we were there!

The breakfast is very basic. Does not match the price. The blankets or bed covers could be a bit more comfortable, a nice thin summer bed cover and not these thin blankets with a sheet that are a bit stiff and not really cozy.

We had a great view of the lake. We like the tiled floor. The Hotel is very nice, full of atmosphere from long gone grand days. Very beautiful. The location is good, very near the lake, just a 3 Minute walk and it takes about 15 to 20 Minutes walk along the lake to get to the center of Stresa with plenty of Restaurants and shops.

Perhaps the distance to the main town only but it was not a great issue if you have the views around you

Views of the lake and only a short walk to the lake ferry and cable car station which gives spectacular views of Lake Maggiore. The Hotel was decorated in old Italian design with some wonderful artwork. There was a roof terrace and a swimming pool . However it was a 15 walk along the lakeside to the town of Stresa Breakfast was silver service.

The hotel should be more clean. Especially at the breakfast room and hallways you can see spiderwebs all over the walls and silling. If paid more attention to details, the overall score would have been higher.

Very good location, close to Mottarone Cable Car and boats to Borromean Islands. We`ve had a superior room on the 4th floor (415), which was a great choice. This property was a little farther from the train station if you are walking there. It was 15 minutes or so with our luggage as not all main roads had sidewalks to get there. With a taxi it would be much easier.

An older hotel with updated, clean bathrooms. Breakfast was plentiful with traditional European breakfast with breads, pastries, fruit, meats, cheeses, juices, and coffee brought to your table. Large indoor/outdoor dining area. There is a large rooftop terrace overlooking the lake and nearby towns to enjoy a cool and quiet evening. Pool area was adequate with lounge chairs, surrounded by gardens for privacy. There is also a great mountain view from the pool. Would definitely return to Hotel Royal. Easy 15-20 minute walk to center of town for lunch or dinner with gorgeous views along the lake.

This is a beautiful hotel with friendly and helpful staff and excellent facilities. The walk into town is one of the most beautiful walks in Europe - stunning views out over Lake Maggiore and through well maintained pretty gardens along the waterfront. Hotel has lovely restaurant/breakfast room with open terrace onto garden. The bar was well stocked and very reasonably priced for a hotel bar with seats on the terrace overlooking the garden area. We paid extra for a room with a garden view, anticipating it would be at the back and not expecting it to be looking at the road which was really quite noisy as were the trains. The staff let us have a room with a sideways view of the lake which was less noisy but quite small for 2 of us . The following is not for publication (Not sure about the over- enthusiastic Maitre D'Hotel and feel the rest of the waiters should at least be allowed to talk to the visitors in a quiet manner at breakfast time!!)

I have been to the hotel before and like the position close to the ferry and to the islands and the informal, comfortable and friendly atmosphere and garden with pool at the back. Staff on reception were very helpful including the young trainee.

The beds were a bit narrow and a bit hard. The blankets were the Italian style, a thin sheet with a pretty stiff blanket on top. This is not as nice as a cuddly blanket.

We had a lovely room with a wonderful view. The balcony was nice and big we could use it comfortably. Great breakfast with good coffee. The room was not big but the weather was good so we didn't spend much time in the room. The balcony made up for the lack of space. The aircondition worked very well and was very quiet. Thanks to the good quality balcony door we didn't hear the traffic noise nor the train at night. We had the aircon running so could keep the doors shut.

    Nothing I can think of.

Liked everything.....the maitre d in restaurant was particularly impressive. Our room had great views of lake and mountain...Also liked that it was a family run hotel with more modern hotel built around old family villa..an older member of family had a studio overlooking pool area, and paintings (good ones) of his were rotated around walls of old villa. I suspect much better value than the original four star hotels lining the main lakefront, though a little further to walk to centre. Many people had half board..we didn't, but the evening meal was great and very good value.

If you stay, don't eat at the hotel. By far the worst meal in a two-week trip to Europe. It had the feel of a 1950's Pocono Hotel dining room with comparable service. The dinner was very disappointing, and breakfast wasn't so good either. If they made an effort to revise their food service section of the hotel, this could be a real gem.

The hotel is very nice with great access to Isola Bella and the lift to the top of the mountain. Partial lake view from our room. The AC wasn't the most efficient but adequate. The staff for the hotel were very good, but the restaurant part not so much.

Airco did not work very well. Quiet and user-friendly but did not cool enough. Good airco is necessary because the hotel is not so far from the train tracks, so you cannot leave the balcony doors open due to noise. The doors are fine for sound insulation. Pool not heated, uncomfortably cold. Breakfast buffet was OK for Italian standards, but at that price, I would expect more than just boiled eggs as a hot breakfast. I paid 135 EUR booking far in advance. I would have preferred one of the main hotels by the lake but they were full.

In good condition. Friendly and efficient staff. Lobby has nice classic decor; rooms are functional white and plain but do have a lovely chandelier and a very nice marble bathroom. Location is not as remote as I thought, easy and short walk to town. On hot days you can take the small boats to Stresa pier from the pier about 200 m from the hotel.

Being a bit fussy the hotel's fittings are aged and could do with an upgrade.

The situation of the hotel is the best with boats cable car and town nearby with some lovely strollls as well.

The evening meals - while having a choice of 3 for each course - was a little on the expensive side. However, our main criticism was that the bath in the bathroom was *tiny*! We couldn't lie comfortably in the bath, and even taking a shower one had to be very careful. (Good water pressure though!)

Wonderful view from our balcony out onto the lake (even though we didn't specifically have a lake-view room). Breakfast was great, wide choice available, priced extras were highlighted. Pleasant music playing throughout the hotel; a piano was often being played by one of the guests. The weather forecast was published every day at reception. All of the staff were always so helpful, friendly and cheerful.

I did not like the pillows at all, they were too hard, and I did not like the towels, they were not bath towels, but dish towels.

The restaurant dinners were good but a little too expensive. The pool was nice and refreshing.

It's quite far away from the Stresa city center. And most of activities and restaurants are in the center, so you need to walk 25-30 mins every time to reach life. But hotel restaurant serves the dinner. No hot breakfast. And once again, it's OK hotel, but not 8,5 as it's rated here.

The hotel is OK. The room was big, so as the bathroom. Nice balcony and quite clean. Staff is nice and friendly. For hotter weather there's a pool in the garden. And the overall hotel looks really beautiful. Carciano boat station is very close to the hotel, so you can start visiting the islands without going to Stresa. Hotel is pretty close to the railway station, 15 mins by walk - but no pedestrian line.

More mildew in my bathroom than I would normally have put up with if it hadn't been for the view from my balcony. Food not up to Italian standards strange combinations, No a la carte , no snacks to speak of. Glass of wine not possible in the restaurant only bottles, difficult when one wants white and the other red. Glasses are allowed in the bar, strange? The roof terrace which looks lovely in the pics is unloved and very neglected.

The views were stunning. The pool good, apart from the mosquitos. Easy access to boats and the cable car up

The air condition is NOT self-controlled. There is no way to reduce the temperature, even at a hot weather. Moreover, there are hours the AC stops working at all. All rooms have a long common balcony, divided by thin bars for each room, which means lack of privacy. The city center is not far, less than one kilometer, but a part of the way (crossing a park to the lake) is not very friendly in the darkness.

The hotel has a classic elegant design, and the room was spacious and comfortable with a lake view. The staff at the reception was friendly and helpful. Guests are entitled to a reduced price to visit the Borromean islands, which is an absolutely must. Breakfast was fair, with a good selection of cheeses and ham, but no fresh vegetables. They also offer a delicious dinner for a reasonable price, which is convenient if you do not want to go the center, as there are not many restaurants in the area.

Rude and arrogant head waiter. Poor quality food. Quality cut to meet coach operator's prices.De luxe room had inadequate clothes storage, single beds pushed together and not secured, so a gap down the middle. Cheap unpleasant toiletries. Empty fridge which was unsecured so pulled out whenever we opened the door. Worn out towels, unchanged in 5 days. A long walk into town (40) mins.

General presentation. Reception staff. Bar, pool ,garden, view. Cleanliness.

i had been traveling for past three weeks through Croatia, Bosnia, Venice. It was odd to have to ask for boiled egg ! No menu was offered. I like omelette or scrambled egg, maybe I should have asked . These were readily available in Croatia, Bosnia, etc.

Views from rooftop were good. Very close to boats.

The main road and the railway line were close to this hotel making it traffic noisy, the railway seemed to run very late into the night--goods trains that interupted sleep.

Comfortable room with lovely view over main garden--bathroom could have done with a shower cubicle instead of a bath shower. Good food with friendly staff. lShort walk to lake side and ferry- Wonderful roof top views of lake and the islands. About 15 minute walk from town centre.

What a wonderful hotel. Although we had a garden view room we also got a beautiful view of the lake. The walk into town was lovely along the promenade and the hotel was so close to the cable car and ferry dock. The best thing was the staff who were so friendly, kind and always very helpful. Would love to go back

Location close to the pier for ferry to the islands. Hotel is very nice n clean. Good furnishing. Staff very helpful. The owner puts many of of his beautiful paintings in the hotel, they use flowers from their own gardens for decoration, making the atmosphere very cosy and comfortable.

We had no issues during our stay - and would definitely recommend this hotel.

The ambiance of the hotel was very Italian. We never had a problem sitting by the pool. Breakfast was good- with polite and efficient staff, overseen by a professional manager who always had a fun word to say to all guests. The walk into town was pleasant and not too far (about 15-20 minute walk long the lake front). Close to the cable car, lake and island ferries. Adequate hotel parking.

    Leaving.

The staff are the main asset of this lovely hotel - always willing to help with a smile and be of assistance. Hotel close to the cablecar and ferry link to the islands. Also easy walk to the railway station. The roof terrace has outstanding views of the lake. We would love to return in the future.

The room was a little bit disappointing but we didn't spend much time in it.

The hotel is full of beautiful paintings by the artist owner and his son. There is a wonderful rooftop terrace offering fantastic views of the lake and mountains. There is also a nice pool in the lovely garden and a little terrace which overlooks it. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. The hotel is away from the busy road and has plenty of parking spaces. A lovely hotel for a family holiday.

Lovey quiet location - right next to the boats, yet calm and away from the hustle of the main street. Very friendly front desk staff, always smiling and very helpful. The hotel has a nice old-school charm about it.

The bedroom is ok, very basic. We had some issues while took a shower: the water oscillated to very hot or very cold (apparently it happens when most of the guests decide to take a shower at the same time). The breakfast is super basic (don't expect much of it!), but served in a beautiful garden.

The hotel is located near the center - 15 minutes of an enjoyable walking. It has a nice view of the lake. The swimming pool is very good and is located in a beautiful garden. Friendly employees.
