We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.

By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

United KingdomOn the whole the evening meal was a fun experience, however perhaps the customers could be asked how they would like their steak to be cooked and wait staff could gain more familiarity with how to serve the available drinks (the wine). But the staff at dinner were all very lovely and tried to explain things to us in English and gave us recommendations of what sake to try!
Good size Japanese style room with private onsen. Room very clean and comfortable. Public onsen well maintained and a very relaxing experience. Front desk staff very helpful and explained all the available services and how to use the public onsen.

United StatesReception desk and lobby area was dimly lit. While we understood the intent to be calming and relaxing it was a bit unnerving near the onset and rock bed bath.
Very private, not over staffed and the staff was very friendly. Smart phone ordering was super easy and a great amenity.

CanadaThe property is a bit dated, but kept very very clean.
The location is good. Very close to the tram line. Also, the food was very well prepared. The staff were excellent and very attentive. The yukata was a nice touch. Great spa add on values, too. Our included dinner was a delicious set menu. It was very authentic Japanese, and a fun challenge as westerner.

nice experience! Having a private bath in the room was amazing. The dinner and breakfast were some of the best during my vacation in Japan. Easy to find and good for stay if you go to Hakone for 1-2 days.

New ZealandAmazing location, really need to spend at least 2-3 nights here. Dinner and breakfast were fantastic, a real fine dining experience, and a way to try Japanese food. Sadly we missed out on going to the outdoor museums because of the rain. If we come back to Japan we will definately come back to this area. Hotel was lovely, great coffee and staff .

GermanyThe onsen was too hot and thus unusable when i was there. Didn't matter since i had my bath tub, but would be annoying if i had booked a room without.
The open air bathtub was a highlight for sure. Room was fine and big by Japanese standard. Beds are comfy. Breakfast is great, Japanese style. I liked it a lot. Short climb up or down the hill to a cable car station. Convenient location.

JapanCan't name much. Communication in English was a slight issue, but that ist a problem all over Japan. The rooms aren't equipped with wifi, but the lobby is. If you're lucky and have a room above it, you will have some wifi. A smoking area can be found directly at the entrance. It would be nice if there was some seating opportunity and if it was a bit further from the entrance so smokers won't feel like bothering other guests. We haven't tried the tub on the balcony tho it seemed a bit old/stained. But everything was clean.
The hotel is in a peaceful area with mountain view. You're in the middle of nature and breathe fresh air everywhere. When checking in, you can pick a yukata from a stash with different colors and designs and wear it during your stay. After that, you get a welcome drink and some baked goods. The staff is welcoming and friendly. The Japanese breakfast is an experience in itself and you shouldn't miss it. Every amenity you cod need is there. Shampoo, Conditioner, Body Lotion, Face Mist, etc. etc. There are 2 basins in the onsen. One outside and one inside (talking about the female onsen here). For additional 2000¥, you can use the hot stone beds and it's more than worth it.

United KingdomIt’s slightly frustrating that the checkin ends at 18:00, but final restaurant booking is 15:00. This means that if you don’t book dinner with your reservation, you cannot get fed at the hotel, irrespective of capacity. Nonetheless, the staff were very apologetic and overall I would not say this retracts from the experience. Just something to be aware of and could be better communicated on the website.
Overall the hotel is comfortable and well presented with a lovely authentic Japanese feel. The private balcony baths are a highlight and the room was spacious by Japan standards . The breakfast was fantastic and staff were very welcoming and helpful.

ItalyNothing really major. The room smelled funky at first, but nothing that an open window couldn't fix.
Amazing room. Mountain view, open air private onsen. Little things that made this stay incredible. Staff were nice and caring. We arrived when dinner was already being served. And if it wasn't for the night manager, we would have gone to bed without any food. But in some way, they manage to give us two of the best fillet mignon ever had. Get the 120g. We got 60g, it was small!!!! Our waiter was lovely and made sure we had the best dinner even though we weren't supposed to be there. His name was Cole. Or something like that!. Surely going back.

CanadaI got a king size with mountain view private onsen. There was an onsen but not private. I couldn't leave the blinds open as my balcony was facing the main roads. I couldn't see any mountains and the poor design of having the blinds anchor on the left side makes it impossible to open and close the blinds from the onsen tub. The only thing I really liked was the privacy of my onsen. Everything else was under valued including the size of my room. I've been far and wide, hakone was my 12th city on this trip. I've tried all sorts of food and your kaiseki was beyond underwhelming. I've stayed for two nights and your breakfast and dinner meals were too alike. About 90% exactly the same. That's a lazy chef. You guys should also warn customers that your hotel is deep in the mountain. The hike down and back up the hill is no joke. I'm used to speed walking 6 hrs everyday but that mountain was a nightmare. Beer cost additional 9$ a drink. I know drinks at other hotels in hakone are comped with the price. This place was by no means cheap for a 3 star but everything cost extra. You paid extra to have a private onsen but they charge you again per night for using the onsen. There is also an additional fee for the hot stone spa. Other hotels/ryokans in the area at the same price offers more amenities and complementarities integrated into the price. They are the same price as this place. You guys can do better for charging so much. You guys also ask for tips, I thought it was in Japanese culture that tipping is considered disrespectful. What's up with that?
I only liked the privacy of my onsen

United StatesThe outdoor private balcony bathtub (which we paid extra for), was an old wooden box covered in mildew and not something we could take advantage of. This property needs a serious refresh / update. The "onsen" is musty and very small, and the facility charges extra to use the jacuzzi and hot stones area. The dinner was trying to be high-end multi-course, but missed the mark with half of the plates. The lobby, dining area and onsen feel like they are from the 1970s. The location is great, with easy access to the Hakone Ropeway.
Fortunately the room and beds were fine, and featured a Frank Lloyd Wright stand lamp.

AustraliaLoved absolutely everything
Do yourself a favour and STAY HERE whilst in Hakone. If I could rate it 1000/10 I would. We visited from Sydney for 2 nights and have had the most incredible time. I really couldn’t recommend this Ryoken more!! Location: Amazing location in the mountains, short walk from Gora station which is one of the main ones. The walk is all all steep uphill but Hakone is pretty much hills everywhere so it is what it is. The hotel has a super efficient shuttle service though so definitely use that especially when you arrive with your suitcases (although we walked a few times without our suitcases and it was only 10mins max). Shuttle runs 3 times every hour (when stayed there it was on the hour, 20mins, 40mins). Instructions for how to get shuttle are super clear on website. Ryoken & Staff: So peaceful and romantic. The rooms were so spacious (bigger than Tokyo) and had everything you needed inside. Bed super comfy and great mood lighting too. Staff were so so friendly and accomodating, don’t speak much English but we’re visiting their country so that makes sense! You get given these adorable kimonos to wear throughout your stay and shoes. Amenities: Super happy with amenities. Complimentary tea, coffee, happy hour drinks. They also have a private jacuzzi and bedrock bath you can book - highly recommend both. You can also book in a masseuse which I did too, they come to your hotel room. Food: Oh my god I don’t know where to start. The food was INCREDIBLE. We had dinner and breakfast included with the stay. It was very traditional Japanese style so don’t expect toast etc. It is all so thoughtfully and mindfully created, the chefs are sooo lovely and the quality is insane. The courses included of around 7 dishes and it was such a pleasure being able to experience this food. I forgot to tell them I had a dietary requirement (my own fault), and the next night they absolutely catered for me it was so so sweet (give them a few days notice if you have a dietary!).

United StatesUsually don’t write reviews but want to make sure other travelers know what to expect when booking this ryokan. The room was as expected but the open air bath was not clean and didn’t feel worth it to use it, which is a shame because that’s a big reason we were excited for the hotel. The onsen in the hotel was small and a little disappointing compared to facilities I’ve seen in cheaper hotels in Kyoto and Tokyo. The hotel advertises having a lounge but when we asked where it was, we learned that the lounge was the non-desk part of the lobby. There is a smell of sulfur in the air when outdoors. I’m surprised to see so many positive reviews of this ryokan which motivated me to share the experience so they know to improve the customer experience. Beyond the hotel experience Hakone is very small, not that walkable, and has shops that close fairly early. Unfortunately would not recommend this hotel (at least for this price) and would recommend either staying at a more inclusive ryokan or not coming to Hakone.

United KingdomThe breakfast was not what we expected and unfortunately really didn't enjoy it. It was a set meal of which was meat/fish. Which I don't eat, but there wasn't an alternative. So just had a bowl of rice. My partner does eat basically anything and still didn't really enjoy the food. Which is a shame as we were looking forward to a proper sor down breakfast. But other than that, everything else was good!
Clean and comfortable overall. Afternoon drinks/snacks were nice. Rooms were a lovely comfortable size, which isn't common in Japan.
