How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.

Location is a bit far from major touristic attractions and main train station, but we’ll connected by bus
Spacious house (uncommon in Japan). Fiona is a great host, very helpful and responsive. Bycicles are included for free!

Nothing! Maybe the bikes need a little maintenance?
Love the guesthouse, it is one of our highlights for our honeymoon. Fiona is amazing, and the communication was really good. I really like the folder with all the information, it was so helpful for us to plan the trip. We were glad that we followed Fiona's recommendation to visit Mt.Hiei. It was so convenient to have such a spectacular temple! We love everything about Guesthouse Chayama really :) It was great to be able to bike to Kyoto central too !

Pillows were uncomfortable - but this was to be expected as it is a traditional Japanese bed set up so keep this in mind if booking (not like a Western bed).
Host was amazing - so friendly and accommodating. Facilities were great - clean, full kitchen with everything you could need. Free bikes for 4 people. Washing machine. Location was great for us as it was out of the hustle and bustle a little of Kyoto but still close to restaurants, cafes, gardens, temples etc.

The house is great! Not in the centre of Kyoto but it’s easy to get there with public transport or bike :) The neighborhood is quiet, no tourists at all! Fiona, the owner, is extremely nice and helpful! I really recommend Guesthouse Chayama!

Amazing host, really. When she said, contact me if you need anything, she meant it. Usage of bikes included, 7-11 50 meters away, and the local train station around the corner.

Close to rail (Eizan) and bus line stops. Beautifully appointed home. Comfortable futon-the futon rests on a two-inch (?) foam pad on the mat. AC worked great. Plenty of hot water. The owner is great to work with-fast responses, helpful information and friendly.

far away from city center, around 40 minutes by bus from Kyoto station ( depends on traffic) , very small shower for big people.
If You want to feel like in Japan home this it is. Owner very helpful. Neighbours very friendly and safety area. Bikes can be use during the stays.

We loved Guesthouse Chayama!!! The location is great as it is very close to a tram stop and a large grocery store. It's also in a residential area, so it's nice and quiet. The guesthouse's space was really fantastic for our family of four. The kitchen was roomy for meal prep and there were lots of useful (and much appreciated) kitchen basics like oil, salt, tea, sugar, etc. There were lots of ways to either keep spaces open or close spaces off with doors, which we liked with two kids in tow. There is a balcony to hang up clothes which I liked, but an absolutely wonderful feature of this guesthouse is access to bikes and bike helmets. We spent several days in Kyoto and most days we biked to our destinations. We met the host Fiona on our final night and she is just lovely! I would stay here again in a heartbeat!

Loved it all. Really can't fault it. I guess I would say if you have mobility issues the stairs to the second floor are very steep, but there is a good hand rail.
Everything! We liked everything. A home with a wonderful atmosphere, everywhere you rest your eyes is sublime. Very comfortable, well appointed, great neighbourhood. And the host is lovely, a great communicator and went above and beyond for us.
