Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1–10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We're currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate "subscores" in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.

By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

United States of AmericaThe sulfur smell from the water was pretty bad. They didn’t have western food especially breakfast so we didn’t eat at the restaurant much.
The onsens were great. And the ropeway was really pretty.

AustraliaAs other reviews have mentioned, which we did not pay enough attention to, the hotel was actually quite dated. The pictures in the listing do not reflect how it currently looks. Having said that, it was well maintained. We made the decision to stay near the ropeway, rather than go only for a day trip, at the last minute, so our choices of accomodation were limited. The size of the western style room, which is what we wanted, was acceptable by Japanese standards, but not on the riverside, so we didn't have any view. The hotel was nowhere near full, so I'm not sure why they couldn't have given us a room with an outlook, especially considering the room rate we paid. Maybe only the Japanese Style rooms are on the river side? Make sure you request a room on the river side of the hotel. From the listing summary, "...Featuring 2-Michelin stars..." Hmmm... Having eaten at 2-star restaurants all over the world, to be honest, this rating surprised me. The breakfast time of 7:00 to 8:00 is too limiting and smacks of the timing being for the convenience of the hotel and not their guests. When I'm on holiday I don't like being forced to get us this early. Also, in hindsight, I would suggest they offer the Kaiseki evening Dinner with an optional western breakfast, even just a Continental Breakfast, as my breakfast stomach wasn't ready for another culinary adventure. My guess is that the hotel caters mostly for an older Japanese traveller and we were not their target market. We did not feel we got value for money.
Being right next to the bus stop at the Shinhotaka Ropeway made it easy to find and get to the hotel. With the two day Nohi bus + Ropeway ticket it was convenient to get on and off the bus and go to other places on the route between Takayama and the Ropeway. The Japanese kaiseki meals were an experience(!) and their inclusion in the room rate was one of the reasons we booked this hotel. The staff were very hospitable and did their best to describe the different courses in the meals.

United KingdomThe only missing thing is - they don’t provide lunches.
Situated next to the Shin-Hotaka ropeway, has amazing breakfasts/dinners, but most importantly a natural onsen in the basement.

Hong KongWhile the pictures look okay, the hotel was actually a bit dated, including the bath. Just to manage expectation. The meals (dinner and breakfast) were both included in the room rate. While they taste okay, they are average. My parents quite like it, but I found it quite dirty, especially I found hairs in the wash basin when I enter the room. And I could not stand the musty smell when I entered the lobby.
I chose this hotel because it is adjacent to the ropeway. Unfortunately, the no.2 ropeway was under maintenance. If I have known this earlier, I would have cancelled my stay. Three of us stayed in a traditional tatami room for the experience only. This is indeed okay, I could not say it's fantastic (when I compared to other traditional hotel I stayed in Japan). The private bath would make the highlight of the stay, you will be able to enjoy natural spring water bath. The staff are hospitable. Quite a lot of Japanese elderly stayed in this hotel, maybe it's due to the proximity to ropeway or indeed they prefer this type of traditional hotels, I guess. The hotel is also located right next to the bus stop, which is the final stop of the line. Plus point!

United States of AmericaStaff did not speak English very well so on the day of check in and discovering our room was not what we expected, we opted not to bring it to the hotel's attention because we did not want to go through the trouble. We were tired and just wanted to relax. in hindsight though, we should have brought it to their attention from the beginning. Not much we could do after the fact; they claimed there was a misunderstanding with Booking.com. in that the room we thought we booked was not available through a third party agency.
The breakfast and dinner was excellent. We picked this location because of its vicinity to the Shin Hotaka Ropeway. The Second half of the ropeway was closed due to unexpected maintenance. Disappointment one. We booked a room with an open air bath but due to some mix up we did not get that room. Disappointment two. This is an out of the way destination that we were looking forward to only to find disappointment. We made the best of it though. The public onsen is very nice! The parts of the Shin Hotaka Ropeway that we did have access to was really nice and we were treated to beautiful weather!

SingaporeA bit dated in some areas eg. Their private onsen, while functional, looks more like it’s from the 90s.
Excellent location; next to Shinhotaka Ropeway and the bus endpoint, which makes it a super convenient start/end point for all activities in Kamikochi; excellent service with sincere and helpful staff.

AustraliaThe hotel room is a bit old but we don't mind. However, if the rooms were renovated it will make it very attractive.
The hotel location is next to the Shinhotaka ropeway, which is perfect for us to catch the cable car the next morning. It was snowing on that day (7 Apr). We were lucky enough to experience Japan's snow powder. The Japanese kaiseki meals are delicious. The hotel has an English speaking staff who explained the food when we were close to the end of our dinner. Traditionally rice was served close to the end of the kaiseki meal. However, he said we can always ask the rice in the beginning of the meal which we did in our next kaiseki experience and it made our food more enjoyable. The photo in yukata was the start of the dinner. The other photo was breakfast. All of the staff are very friendly and helpful. The view of the female outdoor onsen is a beautiful mountain view. The hotel itself is surrounded by mountains. Absolutely beautiful.

SingaporeOnly one spoke English well, though communication was mostly still effective. Air con was only on heater mode during our stay.
Friendly, polite, helpful, accommodating staff. Love the dinner, the view of the traditional room. Facilities were clean. We wanted to reach the ropeway early next morning. So the location suited us nicely cos we could store away our luggage after check out. Picked them up conveniently after descending the alp.

United States of AmericaPrice is high. Quality of dinner was best we had in a hotel we stayed in a two week trip. Also most comfortable Japanese style room we stayed in. but price is still steep. So many onsen hotels in this area appear to be out of business. So price is perhaps driven by supply, but perhaps could attract more at an adjusted price point.
Great location with onsen next to ropeway. Dinner was excellent. Easy parking and polite staff.

United KingdomYou have to reserve breakfast and dinner 2 days in advance and there aren't any shops nearby, so if you don't do this, you'll go hungry!
The staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel was clean everywhere, provided toiletries and free water to refill. The shower was hot and the room was warm. It was right next to the Shinhotaka Ropeway, so it was very easy to get to the hotel by bus and go to the Ropeway. It was really easy to get to all the other attractions by bus too. You get free access to the indoor and outdoor part of the Shinhotaka Onsen, which is lovely!

United States of AmericaDated property that could use a bit of TLC.
The onsen was amazing. The onsen on the men’s side consisted of one indoor pool, two outdoor pools, and two individual tubs outside. It was amazing. The hotel itself was a bit dated and the staff, while wonderful, were not as attentive as other Ryokans we have stayed. One other reviewer described it like staying at grandma’s house. This was a fair comparison. Finally, this hotel is very remote, the last place on the bus route. Given the price we could have stayed closer to town, but we loved the Onsen and our overall experience was excellent.

GermanyAbsolutely amazing staff! Beautiful outdoor Onsen (especially lovely on colder days), one can also book a private bath. The food was sublime! Delicate presentation and delicious. The most amazing part though was that after the first night we told them that two people would prefer vegetarian food and not only did they prepare the rest of their meals vegetarian, they prepared the whole feast as delicately and with as many different creations as the traditional food for non vegetarians!
