Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

United StatesLocation - car recommended. Bus is OK, but only walk friendly attraction is the ryugaeki falls. Access to Shiraito falls is cut off (Shinanoji trail damaged) Meals were a mix of western and Japanese (which felt weird). For example pesto sea bream.
2 onsen options - public indoor & private 露天風呂(outdoor rotenburo). I spent ~2h over multiple visits in the onsens (1 night stay) Water temperature (42 Celsius) was perfect, and left skin feeling great Friendly and polite staff Operates like a historic ryokan (i.e. call reminders for meals, setting up futon, etc) Quiet & good room size. Note: Yes, there's water damage/mildew, but it is an older ryokan. Decent for the price and authentic experience

United KingdomReally only accessible by car as public transport was limited during the night. We did see a bus stop just outside Kose. The mountain roads leading up to the hotel are pitch black at night so be prepared and drive carefully. It is a tolled road into a national park so during the day you have to pay 500 yen but during the night the toll was unmanned. The hotel staff did say after we arrived that had we mentioned Kose hotel we would have been let in for free, if you had payed the hotel would refund you if you keep your receipts
Very remote onsen in a national park away from the busy city so noise pollution was non existent. There was a stream running from outside our room so which was very relaxing if you enjoy those sounds. The private onsen which you could book when you want to use it was clean and extremely relaxing. The water temperature was excellent. The staff were excellent and very accommodating as we did not speak any English at all so had to communicate via google translate.

SwitzerlandThere is not much more to see nearby than the hotel itself and you would need a car or rely on an infrequent bus connection (with most passenger going to Kusatsu, so ensure to tell the driver you need to unboard earlier or it will take forever to get your luggage back)
Staff was very kind and patient since I do not understand Japanese too well. The food was great

Hong KongA quiet retreat with a rich sense of history in the area. The rooms and furnishings beautifully reflect the charm of the past, featuring décor and facilities that preserve an authentic 1980s traditional Japanese Onsen style. Perfect for those who appreciate a nostalgic and peaceful atmosphere.

ThailandStaff very friendly and helpful. Staff speak little english, so be prepared to use a translator. Onsen water is very good. Food is very nice, standard kaiseki meal. Breakfast is typical japanese breakfast. Private onsen is free of charge. Hotel easily accessible via bus. Check the schedule before time since the bus isnt 24 hours.

CanadaUncomfortable bed; dated and shabby furnishings. VERY mediocre food - tasted like all the ingredients were past due. Kitchen staff kept insisting there was no spinach in the meal (my wife is allergic) in spite of us seeing spinach in the dish. No apologies, just didn't seem to care. We left a day early. By FAR the worst place we stayed in a month in Japan.
Private onsen was very nice. Building is in a beautiful natural setting quite far out of town. Busses stop running in the late afternoon.

LuxembourgIt was the most expensive place that I stayed in while visiting Japan. Unfortunately, it was also of the lowest quality. The bathroom smelled bad, there were stains on the walls, a knob was missing from the cupboard, wooden chopsticks and worst of all, the air conditioner was broken.
Service was pleasant

IrelandThe thing that bothered me the most was how dirty the whole room, and especially the bathroom, was. Everywhere you looked at there was mold from a long time ago. Attached is a picture of the kettle that's supposed to be DRINKING WATER for your tea. Disgusting. The Onsen is free, but when you do the checkout you have to pay tax, mine was ¥300. The hotel is an hour away from the city so they could have more vending machines on site. You could only buy beer, water, tea and cup noodles and they were overpriced. Location is horrible for going around, no taxis near, and if you do get a taxi it'll be around ¥3,000-¥4,000 and the only bus from the hotel was only working from 10 am to 4 pm with a 40-minute gap. So for the whole day there would be 9 buses in total. The check out is 10 am, the earliest checkout I have ever seen. This is my 5th week in Japan and this stay was my worst experience (other factors involved). Due to the lack of cleanliness, I don't recommend this hotel.
I liked the room in terms of size, of furniture, of decoration. The private onsen was really nice too.

SingaporeEverything from the service to food to room and omg the onsen was really bad..
I'm a regular with booking.com for 10+ years n true onsens hopper and I must expressed this is 1 of those bad ryokans we have ever experienced!! Traditional old we can expect but toilet was dirty n service was zero.. food was bad unlike a real ryokan we were served western food for both nights! They still used kerosene as heater n whole ryokan was smelling of kerosene!! Utterly DISAPPOINTED n for the price we paid....it was really NOT WORTH IT AT ALL..
