Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1–10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We're currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate "subscores" in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

United KingdomWas unfortunate there was no dinner available, but aside from that we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
Staff were very attentive. When we arrived they gave us some tea and sweets which was a nice touch. Hotel itself is a lovely traditional style hotel in the heart of Gion. We had the traditional Japanese room which was in front of the garden which was beautiful.

United States of AmericaPeople have spoken about the stained hallway carpet which is not wrong, but like, we're not sleeping on the hallway carpet so who cares. The private family onsen you can book time for was surprisingly lacking in atmosphere, basically same bathtub size we had in room but with blinding bright lights, did not set much of a spa mood. A few simple design and lighting choices could make it more relaxing.
This was our second ryokan in Japan with mostly traditional elements but with permanent and very comfortable beds in the room for our fragile Western needs (haha) and we loved every bit of our space. A nice little seating area, gorgeous and updated shower, bath, and separate toilet (the lid opened when you opened the door! Most upgraded toilet we had all trip), a mini fridge with a few free beers and water, kettle and pour over coffee, all the bathroom items you may have forgotten, and the most delicious smelling locally made small portions of soap, oils and lotion. We booked too late for a meal here, can't speak to that, but were treated to tea and this delicious ice cream after returning from a day out, it was like layered tiramisu ice cream? Basic coffee and pastries in the morning were nice to get out the door. Location could not have been better if you plan to stay near Gion and many of the temples and shrines, with an easy 15 minute walk if you want to head downtown. The woman helping us and seeing us in and out each day was so incredibly nice too.

Francethe futon were a bit to thin and small for tall people. i enjoyed doubling (one spare in the bedroom) mine as I have backaches. be sure to reserve breakfast and /or dinner when booking as it is not possible once you have checked in.
The Ryokan is the middle of Gion, very close to many sightseeing spots : ideally located. The room is spacious (we were 3 with big suitcases), very clean, bathroom very modern. Complementary coffee in the lobby in the morning. Hosts were very helpful and nice as well.

United States of AmericaThis establishment no longer has futon beds. They also do not offer pajamas or a breakfast anymore. This makes the price unreasonable. Not a con, but the staff does not speak english so american travelers should be cautious
Fantastic location. Great bathroom. Very traditional looking ryokan. They also offer plenty of waters in the fridge

AustraliaThis Ryokan doesn't serve food! Obviously the owners are entitled to not offer inhouse dining. What they absolutely aren't entitled to in this case, however is to advertise their Kaiseki menu prominently on their Booking listing and their website "Please experience the sensational taste and visual of Kyoto cuisines". Both the listing and the website is full of photos of the kaiseki food service and there are significant sections promoting it (unsurprisingly, because the food is such a huge part of the ryokan experience). It might only serve food sporadically, because some recent reviews mention it. That's arguably even worse, as you don't know what to expect. In any case, it's obvious from the reviews that this is an ongoing issue, so there's been plenty of time to update the listing. To not have done so is very disappointing and appears intentionally misleading. A response to one of the reviews notes that dining needs to be ordered in advance, however the ryokan does not send any information regarding this, nor any request to pre-order, nor indeed any communication at all prior to check-in. When we called a few days before our booking to pick an evening for the traditional in-room dinner we were told simply that they don't serve food anymore. No explanation is provided for this, and whilst they could have still salvaged the experience by doing a promotion with one of the many kaiseki restaurants in Gyon, or ordering the food from the excellent kaiseki restaurant next door (and I mean literally next door!), or just a recommending a restaurant in the area, they unfortunately choose to do nothing. Breakfast is again, not kaiseki but a very very basic affair. Some slightly worn carpets are not a problem, but a patch of wall in our room with plaster missing seems a bit excessive and would've been a very easy 30 minute job to fix. The onsite onsen is just ok. Its just a larger version of the bathroom one.
The location is excellent. Right in Gyon, literally around the corner from the Yasaka shrine, but on a quiet side street with minimal traffic (arguably because it's not one of the prettiest streets in Gyon, but all the pretty streets are also just around the corner). The staff were unfailingly friendly, smiley and helpful, albeit not particularly proactive with recommendations or in addressing the food situation (more on this below). Some of the rooms are very very spacious and the place is very clean. The provision of Yukata robes and little haori style overgarments and tabi toe socks are a nice touch. The central garden is quite pretty.

ItalyBreakfast only at 7:30 am, no chance to get nothing else then Japanese breakfast. They don’t do the daily room cleaning if you live after 10:00 am. Curfew 00:00 they close the entire building and you get basically locked in. Overall poor English with the only exception of a very friendly young man. Way too expensive for what they offer.
Friendly, polite and very available staff. Traditional ambient and furniture.
