Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

Singaporewould have loved to have a small set of Japanese dinner experience for the child, rather than a western (standard). our boy asked why his meal was "different".

Great value for money hotel on Lake Chūzenji! Friendly, helpful staff who spoke English. Exceptional food - get the dinner package! Really authentic onsen (outside bath is HOT). Highly recommend.

JapanThe outdoor hot spring was a beautiful setting, but the water temperature felt a little too hot, which made it difficult to stay in for long.
The hospitality of the staff was exceptional. I brought my parents to Lake Chuzenji and only realized upon arrival that the facility does not have a lift. The hotel team went out of their way to help, kindly arranging for my parents’ room to be moved from the 4th to the 2nd floor. Thanks to their thoughtfulness, our stay was very comfortable. The room itself was lovely, with an amazing view over the lake.

United KingdomA little on decor but authentic Japanese experience
Fantastic ryokan with clean rooms and lovely inane. It’s traditional and quaint - feels a bit dated but that is part of the charm. Staff are delightful and very attentive. Dinner is wonderful kaisen experience. Perfect location with easy walk to waterfalls and 5k morning run around the lake to old embassies. Boat trip is across the road and bus stop opposite for trip up to the forests. 30 mins from the main shrines on the bus so all round winner

BelgiumThere was nothing not to like.
This is a small bed and breakfast. The location is perfect, it is on stop 28 of the Nikko bus. We stayed in two interconnecting room. While the bathrooms are very modern, the rooms are a bit dated but spotlessly clean and very comfortable. The small onsen is delightful. The food is amazing, they accommodate requests to avoid certain foods even if it is just because of preference and not because of allergies. The staff goes out of their way to help you and they speak good English for Japan. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed. We loved our stay.

SingaporeI did have a problem with the staff attitude during dinner time where I thought the person was a bit condescending. Also, I don't know if it's normal, but the outdoor onsen is located next to another building with windows. I can't help but feel conscious as it seems like people next door can see into the onsen?
Room was clean. Location was right in front of Lake Chuzenji with a bus stop right in front of the property. You can also walk to Kegon falls (~10mins). There is a small area in the hotel lobby where you can sit and just enjoy the scenery - it was really calm and peaceful. We went on a Monday so the hotel was rather quiet and I had the onsen to myself! Dinner course was quite extensive and the staff took care to explain each dish which was nice. Breakfast was simple, but wholesome.

AustraliaNothing. I understand a price rise in autumn season but 60,000 yen plus is double what I paid in June.
I am fortunate to have visited Japan many times and I've stayed at many ryokan. This one really is OUTSTANDING. I'm so lucky I booked 3 nights. The outstanding hospitality from the multinational staff is evident from the warm welcome as soon as you come through the door from Kamio-san jnr.I would like to say thank you very much to each and every member of the staff. What a wonderful team! They were welcoming, kind, helpful and thoughtful. Thank you Kamio-san, Dilakshi,Diane,Sandani, Diru and Nway.Im sorry I don't know the name of the chef. Location: An excellent location right at bus stop number 28 for buses from central Nikko and to Yumoto onsen. Opposite the cruise terminal. I highly recommend the cruise. It has excellent commentary in English as well as Japanese.Futarasan shrine and Kegon Falls are within easy walking distance. Rooms: Very large and in extremely good condition.Clean carpet.Very comfortable beds and pillows with nice bedding. My room 202 was on the 2nd floor, up only one flight of stairs. NO LIFT. There was a lake view but there was a flat roof in the foreground.I think I would prefer room 205.Ask for help to learn how to open the double sliding doors onto the patio. I enjoyed sitting on the sofa enjoying some lemon cheesecake and match cream with coffee one afternoon (very reasonably priced). Individual air conditioning units. Onsen: The ladies onsen is small, as I already knew. I enjoyed the inside one but the outside one was too hot for me. Meals: I'm glad I booked dinner and breakfast.I enjoyed the beautifully presented multicourse dinners. The buffet breakfast I thought was excellent. It included danishes with spinach and fetta and red bean I have never seen elsewhere. My visit was 20 to 23 June. Okunikko is absolutely stunningly beautiful in summer green. I am including a photo of an excellent brochure about the walks in Okunikko I obtained at the Tobu office in Asakusa. I also recommend the eco bus from Okanuma.

The staff was so helpful with helping me optimize my visit. With so many sites to see, they were instrumental to make my trip exceptional. Also, I had both the breakfast and dinner plan, which turned out to be the best way to go. There aren’t many other options close by.

JapanNothing! We loved this place.
We loved the staff here! They were so friendly and helpful. We arrived pretty tired towards the end of a long journey and the staff were so kind. Kamio especially stood out as a friendly staff member who gave us excellent recommendations for day trips in the area and helped us find a relaxing onsen to visit. We speak a little Japanese and staff were happy to chat with us in either English or Japanese. We also loved the food. They had delicious traditional Japanese set meals with enough variety that even our kids were happy. If you're unsure about some of the traditional food, there are plenty of different things to eat. It's a nice balance between traditional ryokan and western-style hotel.
