Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

AustraliaDuring midday, the hostel is closed for those that want to place their bags earlier before check in to wonder around town.
Comfortable place, you can use the kitchen stove for cooking and storing stuff in the fridge which is awesome. Good view of the lake too from the mix dorm room. Hostel keeper was super friendly and knows how to play the traditional Japanese guitar instrument.

AustraliaReally cozy property and common area for food as well. They even provided some coffee/snacks etc. the host is very welcoming as well. We can easily cook something using pan or pot in the kitchen as well. The dorms are good as well as the curtains are really thick so can block the sunlight :)

United KingdomN/A My only issues are with Okunikko itself, not the property.
The location was absolutely amazing, with a beautiful view of both the volcano and the lake. It is a short walk from the bus station and would make an excellent spot for a 1/2 day visit to okunikko. This was improved even more by the caring and incredibly helpful host. Thankyou very much for your hospitality - we had a great time.

ItalyThe location is very central and absolutely beautiful. The lake-view room was priceless—very comfortable and clean. The place itself is stunning, and in the evening it reaches an almost unreal sense of calm. Being by the lake as the sun was setting was an extraordinary experience. It’s definitely worth staying at least one night (but ideally more—there’s so much to do, especially for those who love nature and hiking). The guesthouse is very comfortable and extremely clean, even in the shared areas. There is great attention to detail. The staff were incredibly kind and truly helpful. A wonderful place.

United StatesLoved the homey vibe, and the host Take was wonderful, giving us lots of help with directions and recommendations for site visits, even going so far as to print out maps and highlight/annotate for our benefit. The kitchen was great to use, and the free tea selection was lovely. The facilities were so clean, and the view overlooking lake Chuzenji was unbeatable. Truly a little getaway retreat. Location was great for transit as well, located right by stop 28 on the Yumoto Onsen bus line. Also loved the deer leather jewelry made by Take’s sister.

Czech RepublicChuzenji area, onsens, mountains means nice nature and you can still enjoy it despite of the growing tourist industry. The good planning is important. I was in Chuzenji area many times with bicycle ,hiking etc. since 50 years ago. I found Takeru as excellent host from the young Japanese generation. His place is well mantained and among others also good base to climb Nantai san.

United KingdomThe location was perfect as someone who hiked Mount Nantai earlier in the day. It was raining during the hike so the shoe dryer and other amenities provided were very helpful for drying all my stuff. The beds were comfortable and everything felt very clean. The staff were also very friendly and helpful (thank you!). I came on a Saturday and stayed one night, surprisingly I was the only guest staying in the female dorm so I could sleep very comfortably.

The place is super tidy and cozy, I spent a very relaxing two days here. Mount Nantai trailhead is just three minute walk from the guesthouse.

SwedenLovely guesthouse, great staff, clean, nice. There even is a great piano in a leaving room. I loved the cute art spread around hostel, painted rocks, photos of the staff, nice leather art. You should think of printing your photos and sell them as postcards! The’re amazing and I would definitely buy one if that was an option! I recommend the stay :)

PortugalMinor things. The lockers are small for larger bags, which can be troublesome if the guesthouse is full. When it gets dark, there is really not much to do in the area (I went in March and many businesses were closed, so this might be different in Summer or Spring). Still, these are minor things compensated by the positives
The owner was very friendly and welcoming. Spoke good English. The facilities were all super clean. The guesthouse has a welcoming and cozy atmosphere. Very close to the lake with good views of it. Peaceful. Close to bus stop that takes you to all the major attractions in Nikko,so it's a good place to set up as a base to explore.

SingaporeWe liked our stay at this little guesthouse, so there are nothing negative for us.
The small guesthouse is homely and cosy. It is near the bus stop at Lake Chuzenji, near a mini market and was within walking distance to the town center. The facilities feels new and are well-kept and clean. Take-san was very helpful. He recommended the Yumoto trails to us and he also know which trail is temporarily closed. He helped us fill up the courier service form to send our luggages to the next destination and even emailed to inform them of our luggage delivery.
